Really? There's good reason as to why an injury changes sides, and good reasons as to why people feel pain after running. Creating new compensations for the activity, then returning to old ones afterwards. Have you really done your research on functional patterns? All of these things you are leaving open ended are answered. Talk to Naudi for 5 minutes, you'd change your mind. Or just take a look at what they can do with scoliosis, something only possible when you respect fascial lines. As for the fear reduction, the deep front line and diaphragm are easily influenced by emotion, that's not to say it's the cause of pain, just a factor.
Thanks for the comment. I understand the motivation to hold on to the status quo. Functional patterns, fascial lines, scoliosis, PRI, Naudi, etc. I practiced that way for 15 years. I was raised by the brilliant minds that gave rise to manual therapies and biomechanical rationale. I've dissected many cadavers including my most recent with Tom Myers. I can explain anything in biomechanical terms. Often that reduces fear and leaves people feeling better. I'm not denying it's important sometimes. I still use those ideas daily. But many fell through the cracks. 1 in 4 are in chronic pain. This is because it's the biomechanists who are not paying attention to the evidence. It's not the whole story. Pain is a human experience influenced by many factors. Biomechanics and input from body tissues is merely one small bit of info the brain considers. I realize the new science of pain can be disruptive to what we've all been building for the past 3 decades. But it's time to expand the view and get out of our silos for the good of our clients. For around 1 and a half to two years ive had pain in my right shoulder sometimes the front, then the back of it and ive been to multiple doctors but recently went to a sports physio and he explained to me i have internal rotation in the affected shoulder and then i dived down the vast rabit hole for these issues but only now after a year or so of it affecting me in my workouts and in general day to day life. But now I have pain in scapula and alot of crunching noises when i move my arm, i have pain in elbow and the shoulder pain as well. I've been training the training the rotator cuff muscles(apart from the subscapularis) and stretching them, lower and mid traps, the serratus anterior for sure but while ive seen increases in strength i havent seen any substanial reduction in pain. I was wondering if maybe there is a root cause to all these problems occuring in my right upper body or if as mentioned in the video its in my head more than anything. But, visually i can see that i do have scapular winging on the affected right arm and it is more signifcantly rounded then the left shoudler. I would really appreciate any help because most doctors i see here in india attribute the issue to my height (Im 6'6) and the fact that ive been playing basketball since i was in the first grade. Thank you, your videos have really helped me inform myself more about my pai.
Rabbit hole indeed. I'm sorry. All pain is controlled by the brain, but all pain is real. Physical changes (like scapular winging and noise/friction) are also often created by the brain in the face of fear. These are all real issues and cause real symptoms. But they are rarely dangerous. I was told I have lumbar stenosis when I start walking or running the pain and tingling in my legs and feet come on gradually, is this still generated by the brain or am I doing any damage by Continuing ?
Joe it’s a hard question to answer without an exam. Symptom behavior is an important important piece of evidence, but not the only one. Many people have stenosis and have no pain pain. It’s a normal part of aging and not pathological most of the time. Many people with lumbar stenosis find relief when they mobilize their thoracic spine and open up their hips, especially in the front. Technically all pain comes from the brain, but only a small percentage of pain is influenced by information coming from damaged tissue and the body. we make a diagnosis by ruling out the body and then ruling in the brain and nervous system as the primary cause some thoughtful detective work.
