I have never experienced an assault on me in Germany, but in two years I saw three mass brawls under my windows, and two quite violent 1 vs 1 fights. Also, not necessary something violent, but the amount of weirdos who are wandering around and just scream as loud as they can is astonishing, happens around once a month. I live in a town centre above two bars, and there is loud behaviour and I have witnessed a couple arguing to a degree that I started shouting from the window and even called the police, but no physical violence ever.
Animal repellant spray is pretty much mandatory if you own a dog on the country side. You either get attacked by other people´s dogs, or you scare them off and then get attacked by their owner. Either way, an animal will be peppered and you want to make sure you are the one peppering.
That sounds pretty wild. What country is that in, as I live in a small rural town which I can only call dog central, and I do not hear of such cases of dog walker rage.

The range of pepper spray is not limited, only for the irritant sprays. Personally I prefer the pepper spray over irritant sprays. It works better, especially on persons that are under the influence of drugs. And the irritants chloracetophenone (CN or tear gas) and 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile (CS gas) are both suspected to cause cancer. The tests were only about that it does not inflict any permanent damage, not if you'll get cancer a few years later after being exposed to it.

I don't think there's any particular etiquette: it's a shop like any other. You just go in, say you're looking for a spray for personal protection, and ask them what they can recommend.
Both CS and CN are tear gas. They are by definition a weapon. The two most commonly used tear gases are ω-chloroacetophenone, or CN, and o-chlorobenzylidenemalononitrile, or CS. CN is the principal component of the aerosol agent Mace and is widely used in riot control. It affects chiefly the eyes. CS is a stronger irritant that causes burning sensations in the respiratory tract and involuntary closing of the eyes, but its effects wear off more quickly, after only 5 to 10 minutes of breathing fresh air.
Some years ago the german border control confiscated the pepper spray which they found in my motorhome when I enterring from Switzerland - they told me I was not allowed to carry this stuff in Germany, so your video got me surprised a little. Maybe it was one of those non- vertified non-german sprays.
I believe the relevant laws came into effect in 2002 and amended in 2008. But if it's pepper spray and wasn't clearly marked as an animal repellent, then it would have been illegal to carry it.

In Canada, it is defacto illegal. Even bear spray is only legal if you're in the appropriate environment. Essentially, if you're walking around town with bear spray on your belt, it's illegal. If it's not reasonable to believe you sre either in a place where bear attacks are a reasonable danger, or on your way to a place where that is the case, then you're carrying a prohibited weapon.

Czechia is basically fine with pepper spray. No idea on the others. One question on Deutschland pepper spray law: What would the rule be for poijting it at someone without pulling the release switch? How much of a threat does it take for that to be legal? Now the real question can procede. If you are walking to a Battle of Bosworth Field reenactment and you find someone robbing a restaurant at knifepoint, can you use your sword while wearing that armour you have?
I think if merely showing the spray is enough to stop the attack, that would definitely be considered the mildest possible deterrent. If you threaten an innocent person with pepper spray, I'm pretty sure that would be treated in exactly the same way if you threatened them with, say, your fists. As for your Bosworth Field cosplayer, I'm sure that if he wasn't breaking any laws by carrying an offensive weapon in public, he'd be allowed to use whatever he had to hand to stop a crime in progress, so long as his response is proportionate. I'm not sure, though, that these people use real swords in their re-enactments.

Pepper spray from a foreign country, yeah. I know some young people here who bought theirs in the Czech Republic. They "had heard" that it's stronger. Well, first of all, it's NOT, that's an urban legend. And second, even if so, who cares? They'll never use it anyway. The only thing that is "stronger", in some sense, is the fine they can expect if caught with it. Alright, I'm not complaining. At least the era of their "strong" laser pointers seems to be over. Naw. Not the same category at all. Axe/Lynx were 2000s (the Noughties) hype. Those sprays were supposed to have women (and some men) swooning just from the smell. To me it was reminiscent of 1960s/1970s Old Spice hype where the smell was just so "everywhere" that you you either became immune to it because you had smelled it so often you no longer noticed it, or you became actively aggressive because that damned cloying smell invaded your space indecently and overpowered everything else. However, I don't actually remember hearing or reading of a case where anyone was physically harmed by inhaling any of those aftershaves/body sprays.

An offensive weapon is what we typically call a weapon now and defensive weapons is what we now typically call armour. So whilst there is such a thing as a defensive weapon, it's not that it's used for self defence but that it's used to directly prevent harm (like a stab vest or ballistic shield).
@@PCDelorian Yes, I do HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) and we have to be very aware of what we're carrying where and how, blunt practice swords are still weapons and can get us in trouble if seen in public. There are times when I've considered carrying a plastic buckler (small round shield) but then thought better of it, someone might think it was offensive as well as defensive.

This is made more complicated because instaneous arming means that if you use it offensively whilst being attacked so long as it wasn't your intent prior to the attack to use it as a weapon you can still plead self-defence. Obviously its hard to say, these are questions of fact for a jury and so no lawyer would be able to say 100% and I am not a fully qualified lawyer at any rate, but generally speaking so long as the intent is to stop someone attacking you by preventing the attack (by having something in the way) as opposed to overpowering them or rendering them unable to attack, its okay. This is not a commonly fought area of the law though and how the courts would respond to any given situation is hard to say.

I am not a lawyer either, but I think the judges in the Netherlands might be a bit less lenient on self defence. It has to be proportional. A defence like "I could not help myself, I was in panic" is not sufficient as anybody can say he was panicking at the time. The result counts. So if you were in a short incident and unharmed whilst the attacker is in hospital, you will have a tough time.

In The Netherlands, pepperspray is counted as a weapon and therefore illegal. Don't bring it with you if you visit The Netherlands.
Same for UK, Belgium, China, and Norway.

Animal repellant spray is pretty much mandatory if you own a dog on the country side. You either get attacked by other people´s dogs, or you scare them off and then get attacked by their owner. Either way, an animal will be peppered and you want to make sure you are the one peppering.
That sounds pretty wild. What country is that in, as I live in a small rural town which I can only call dog central, and I do not hear of such cases of dog walker rage.

Well, hitting someone with your steak is illegal as well. If the steak is frozen it may even count as a dangerous item if used as a weapon.

The range of pepper spray is not limited, only for the irritant sprays. Personally I prefer the pepper spray over irritant sprays. It works better, especially on persons that are under the influence of drugs. And the irritants chloracetophenone (CN or tear gas) and 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile (CS gas) are both suspected to cause cancer. The tests were only about that it does not inflict any permanent damage, not if you'll get cancer a few years later after being exposed to it.
It must be bought in a weapons shop & I have yet to muster up the courage to step inside one - we don't have weapons shops where I come from, so I've had no chance to get familiar with the etiquette in one of them.

I don't think there's any particular etiquette: it's a shop like any other. You just go in, say you're looking for a spray for personal protection, and ask them what they can recommend.

Both CS and CN are tear gas. They are by definition a weapon. The two most commonly used tear gases are ω-chloroacetophenone, or CN, and o-chlorobenzylidenemalononitrile, or CS. CN is the principal component of the aerosol agent Mace and is widely used in riot control. It affects chiefly the eyes. CS is a stronger irritant that causes burning sensations in the respiratory tract and involuntary closing of the eyes, but its effects wear off more quickly, after only 5 to 10 minutes of breathing fresh air.
Some years ago the german border control confiscated the pepper spray which they found in my motorhome when I enterring from Switzerland - they told me I was not allowed to carry this stuff in Germany, so your video got me surprised a little. Maybe it was one of those non- vertified non-german sprays.
I believe the relevant laws came into effect in 2002 and amended in 2008. But if it's pepper spray and wasn't clearly marked as an animal repellent, then it would have been illegal to carry it.

In Canada, it is defacto illegal. Even bear spray is only legal if you're in the appropriate environment. Essentially, if you're walking around town with bear spray on your belt, it's illegal. If it's not reasonable to believe you sre either in a place where bear attacks are a reasonable danger, or on your way to a place where that is the case, then you're carrying a prohibited weapon.
Doesn't stop the Montreal Metro from getting fumigated on the regular by this stuff because a commuter got tired of some crazy aggressing them. I mean, we're not New York. But you notice more unhoused and substance abusers about, especially in certain stations downtown.

Czechia is basically fine with pepper spray. No idea on the others. One question on Deutschland pepper spray law: What would the rule be for poijting it at someone without pulling the release switch? How much of a threat does it take for that to be legal?
Now the real question can procede. If you are walking to a Battle of Bosworth Field reenactment and you find someone robbing a restaurant at knifepoint, can you use your sword while wearing that armour you have?
I think if merely showing the spray is enough to stop the attack, that would definitely be considered the mildest possible deterrent. If you threaten an innocent person with pepper spray, I'm pretty sure that would be treated in exactly the same way if you threatened them with, say, your fists.
As for your Bosworth Field cosplayer, I'm sure that if he wasn't breaking any laws by carrying an offensive weapon in public, he'd be allowed to use whatever he had to hand to stop a crime in progress, so long as his response is proportionate. I'm not sure, though, that these people use real swords in their re-enactments.

Pepper spray from a foreign country, yeah. I know some young people here who bought theirs in the Czech Republic. They "had heard" that it's stronger. Well, first of all, it's NOT, that's an urban legend. And second, even if so, who cares? They'll never use it anyway. The only thing that is "stronger", in some sense, is the fine they can expect if caught with it.
Alright, I'm not complaining. At least the era of their "strong" laser pointers seems to be over. These things were a nuisance and had spread faster and wider than a pandemic ever could. So pepper spray is their new hot thing. Well, at least they won't brag around with it. Or so I hope.

Naw. Not the same category at all. Axe/Lynx were 2000s (the Noughties) hype. Those sprays were supposed to have women (and some men) swooning just from the smell. To me it was reminiscent of 1960s/1970s Old Spice hype where the smell was just so "everywhere" that you you either became immune to it because you had smelled it so often you no longer noticed it, or you became actively aggressive because that damned cloying smell invaded your space indecently and overpowered everything else.
However, I don't actually remember hearing or reading of a case where anyone was physically harmed by inhaling any of those aftershaves/body sprays.
I was expecting a few people to of used the spray as deodorant not mouthwash!
I think the size of a typical canister for personal use is more similar to that of a breath freshener spray than a deodorant spray.

An offensive weapon is what we typically call a weapon now and defensive weapons is what we now typically call armour. So whilst there is such a thing as a defensive weapon, it's not that it's used for self defence but that it's used to directly prevent harm (like a stab vest or ballistic shield).
@@PCDelorian Yes, I do HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) and we have to be very aware of what we're carrying where and how, blunt practice swords are still weapons and can get us in trouble if seen in public. There are times when I've considered carrying a plastic buckler (small round shield) but then thought better of it, someone might think it was offensive as well as defensive.
@@Matt_The_Hugenot Its a matter of intent, which is ultimately the issue the prosecution always have to prove, if you have with the intent to use it offensively its an offensive weapon, if you do not have that intent then its defensive. This is made more complicated because instaneous arming means that if you use it offensively whilst being attacked so long as it wasn't your intent prior to the attack to use it as a weapon you can still plead self-defence.
Obviously its hard to say, these are questions of fact for a jury and so no lawyer would be able to say 100% and I am not a fully qualified lawyer at any rate, but generally speaking so long as the intent is to stop someone attacking you by preventing the attack (by having something in the way) as opposed to overpowering them or rendering them unable to attack, its okay. This is not a commonly fought area of the law though and how the courts would respond to any given situation is hard to say.

Jörg Sprave is such a sad case. Started as a classic youtuber who got successful with creative and fun inventions he made with rubber with wood in his workshop.
Now all he's doing is positing ads for the weapons his company buys from Chinese contractors that are specifically designed to use grey zones in the German law. And to push his sales, he has no problem to make panic videos in which he tells his viewers that Germany will be without gas in the winter and that they'll need to buy his weapons to fight off looters.

I am not a lawyer either, but I think the judges in the Netherlands might be a bit less lenient on self defence. It has to be proportional. A defence like "I could not help myself, I was in panic" is not sufficient as anybody can say he was panicking at the time. The result counts. So if you were in a short incident and unharmed whilst the attacker is in hospital, you will have a tough time.

Well, if you aren't planning to spend a few months in a forest trying your hardest to aggravate wild animals, the chances are very low.
Regarding man-eating feral animals - zero, as they were thoroughly eradicated more than a century ago. We now have some wolves and bears passing through, but I've never heard about people (rather than livestock) being attacked by them. Dangerous dogs (or rather their owners) are more of a problem.
Pretty much zero. At the moment people are panicking about wolves, but they actually avoid humans as much as they can.
The most dangerous animals you're likely to encounter are wild boar, but they'll leave you alone if you leave them alone. You're not likely to even see one, but if you do just stay calm, don't corner it or try to chase it, and never get between a female and her young.

At the end of 2017 there were 557,560 licenses on file, so the increase over the past 6 years was onlly about 326,000.
