Sort of reminds me how in Kingdom come deliverance, you can improve your speech chance with peasants or nobles which there are fewer nobles, but the peasant perk is more of a trap because you can easily out rank their speech as for nobles, not really.

Tried the DOS version in 2017 and was awestruck by its potential. The graphics didn’t bother me at all, but the insanely large dungeons, broken quests and crappy controls eventually ruined the experience.
Who knew so many people would contribute to the point where a well modded DF Unity is now almost everything I imagined the game could be. So cool.

    • @YourAverageBo
      @YourAverageBo  Год назад +4

The DOS version is incredible! I sadly couldn't get the controls right myself so I didn't get very far (only out of the first dungeon which was a nightmare in of itself) before looking into other stuff! I'm glad my video helped point you to Daggerfall Unity! It really deserves more love!

I nearly quit the game during the second dungeon. The first one, which doubled as a tutorial, took me forever to finish, and the second dungeon had me running in circles for hours. I was so desperate I started hugging the walls, hoping for some hidden path, but I kept ending up back where I started. Eventually, I studied my map carefully and realized where I had fallen into the dungeon. I thought, “If only I could just go straight up…”
Out of frustration, I rammed my character into the wall, not even paying attention to my screen anymore. Then something wild happened-I saw my character climbing the damn wall! My character can climb walls?! I was both furious and amazed. Betrayed, because I had no idea this was even possible, but also intrigued at what else the game might be hiding.
Despite that rocky start, I’ve been really enjoying the game. The dungeons are huge, and figuring them out takes skill and patience-you can easily spend hours on one. Things get especially tricky when you run into levers and gates, and you’re left guessing what triggers what. Honestly, I like the challenge, but I think it would’ve been nice if the game had at least casually mentioned that climbing is a thing.

-Doing the very first main story quest, make sure you arrive Wayrest at daytime
-Diseases are very deadly in here and game is very vague you contracted one (you get a small popup "You are feeling somewhat unwell"). Fast travelling too far while diseased instakill you. Medical skill decreases time your char identifies the disease.
-Ebony dagger not only is a good weapon, it is also capable of hurting things that are immune to lower tier weapon materials, like ghosts or imps.
-If navigating gargantuan dungeons is not your fancy, you can enable "smaller dungeons" option in Daggerfall Unity. It will make dungeons much more compact, but with less enemies and treasures.
-If your character doesn't know Lockpicking very well, you can always smack the door with your weapon. Door will open at the cost of weapon durability.
-Enchanted gear can be very powerful, but charge aside, their durability cannot be repaired, so make sure you have a spare.
-Blacksmiths gear repair is not instant and takes time, at minimum one day that you need to wait over. It's another reason to have a spare.
-In the dungeons, you can mark places you visited by dropping some worthless items on the floor. Cart can be accessed by dungeon door without the need of leaving the dungeon.
-Recall spell works on any distance, so do not forget to Anchor the new location otherwise you will be teleported into the place you not want

    • @KEKW-lc4xi
      @KEKW-lc4xi Месяц назад +1

I lost my ebony dagger due to having it repaired, then immediately after the transaction, I was accused of stealing from the store, which starts a side quest of me trying to prove my innocence. The guy who was repairing my ebony dagger just disappeared. His apprentice kept calling guards on me, so I thought I needed to kill the guards. I reached a dead end because I was supposed to meet the apprentice who is accusing me at a place I have written down, but I couldn't enter due to needing to pick the lock. Yesterday, I figured out I can bypass the lockpicking by bashing the door in. I should go back and try to finish the side quest and clear my name if possible, because I am hated in Daggerfall because of all that. This game is pretty wild.

Another one of the "Get out of jail free" spells that most characters should learn is Levitate. Make sure to craft it with a short duration as levitation is slow and you don't want to be stuck floating any longer than you have to. It can always be recast as needed. I'm glad that Climbing got a great boost in the Unity engine, but it's still a little clunky.
After that, some QoL mods like hot keys, better spellcasting and the like are wonderful.
Last tip is to take the time and understand the custom classes and background questions. Knowing even half of what's going on will give you a better experience than the default classes.
Do enjoy your time in the Illiac Bay, I honestly feel that Daggerfall Unity is the best TES game in the series. Save early, Save often and watch for spiders.

I like the video! Good stuff!
A couple more tips for new players from a fellow Daggerfall Unity enjoyer:
    • Poison and disease are both deadly and can sneak up on you at any level. Avoid dying to these by keeping a Cure Disease and Cure Poison potion handy!
    • Most quests will have a time limit. There's a main menu option (Advanced>Interface>Countdown quest journal clocks) to show the countdown/how much time is remaining on quests, and I highly recommend having this enabled.
    • Faction reputation deteriorates over time and whenever you fail a faction quest, so be careful when you start out fresh in a guild. If you fail your first quest at 0 reputation, you may be expelled.
    • There is a simple mod for DFU called Convenient Clock. All it does is add a customisable clock to the HUD. This will spare you from having to press "I" constantly to check the time or date.

PSA!!!!: For the spell "RECALL" it's suggested that you place that at the location where you accepted a quest that has a time limit that way you don't have to waste time backtrack and possibly fail on the quest because you are traveling. Traveling in this game takes days and some quests are a couple of days. Zaric does llaythroughs of this game and he does that a lot and I want to let people know.

a lot of modern games have use of quest markers and in game journals to tell you where to go next and what to do, some games even just flashing in your face what you have to do next, or only allowing a linear path of advancement. so when playing a game which is heavily inspired by dnd (even the combat in daggerfall is a dice roll system and whether you hit or miss is on chance) and you’re basically allowed to do whatever you want, it can be hard to know what to do next. i suggest just exploring. explore, go places, talk with random npcs, see what quests you can dig out, see if you can find any maybe hidden and unmarked groups of witches in the wilderness, or other things too! there’s so much content and things to do in daggerfall, just run around and you will find things to do :)

once leaving privateer's hold go to a general store at night and steal everything you can mainly a horse and wagon. Remember stealing is insane in this game and cant be done like in skyrim. Go at night and be prepared to dodge guards, leave the city camp out with your new gear and food and if you were not stopped you can continue like nothing ever happened. alternatively remember that spells like Levitate make this strategy even easier. After having a wagon already you can just fly around from store to store avoiding all accountability as you rob the whole of tamriel blind.

I learned of the unity verson today and have neverplayed before but also excited. Truth be told I am a little worried since I heard people say you can get impossible dungeons or get locked into a dungeon and get the game locked and ruin a save.
Also I want to play a mage that uses spells not weapons but heard magic has issues with late game foes 😢

    • @YourAverageBo
      @YourAverageBo  11 месяцев назад +4

I don't think I've ever been locked in a dungeon and had my playthrough ruined because of it. The Unity version has a wonderful save system and if you get stuck, you can simply reload to a previous save. As for magic getting weaker later... I can't really comment on that since my build was focused around melee! But feel free to experiment with it! The game isn't as unforgiving as you might think! Also, there is an option in Unity where you can ensure you get smaller dungeons rather than the massive ones I got! Hope that helps a little!

I think you only need Steel weapons for dealing with the imps in the tutorial dungeon. There are several weapons you can get through the background questions that *might* end up being Steel at game start, and "silver" works as well.
What really makes the Ebony Dagger a fantastic weapon is how much Ebony weapon material affects chance-to-hit. EVEN IF YOU HAVE NO MATCHING WEAPON PROFICIENCY, an ebony weapon will always be more likely to actually hit an enemy than an iron one, which makes the ebony dagger the best weapon to use in the tutorial dungeon and kind of a game-breaker in general for those early rambling amateur-hour adventures. It's effectively an Easy Mode for Daggerfall.

Use steal mode to lock-pick and pickpocket. Stealing from merchants also increases pickpocket.
If you can break into a store during closed hours without being arrested, you can wipe the shelves clean without needing to steal. Sell for profit.
Use info mode to identify buildings without needing to talk to people.
Whenever you speak politely or bluntly, you level your etiquette/streetwise no matter to whom you speak.
Combine several spell effects in one spell to increase skills of multiple school of magic.
When you dungeon crawl, just have fun. Don’t worry about running past an enemy or not cleaning the dungeon. Just get the objective and stay as long as you like. If you can’t find your objective, you’ll only lose a couple points with your faction, not that big of a deal.
If you allow yourself magic, in character creation, use critical weakness to paralysis. Free Action is the cheapest spell you can buy and it completely neglects the paralysis. A good way to reduce your difficulty to level up.
Join a knightly order for free armour. You can get a free house at the highest rank.
Join a temple to get easy access to buying potions. Especially good if you don’t use magic.
Potion making is not worth the trouble. Just sell your ingredients and buy potions instead.
If you plan on using two handed weapons, you might want to include hand-to-hand as a skill. It’s easy to switch between the two of them, allowing you to level both quickly.

First time playing the game and made some major mistakes already 😂 first of all I had chose slow reaction speed for some reason I had no idea what I was doing and apparently it takes absolute ages to level and up can't change it. Well, I can deal with that. But then I was sent to quests with enemies I can't hit as I didn't get an ebony dagger so failed a couple of them. And first I didn't even know you could bash through the doors so I gave up on couple quests because I thought I couldn't continue. And next I was and still am struggling to cast any magic or find where to buy potions. I found that one temples was selling them but I couldn't buy them because it was for members only and I couldn't join them anymore. Going in completely blind wasn't the best idea 😅 But I'm still enjoying the game a lot!
Edit: Aaaand I'm playing as a Knight so no best weapons in the game for me 😂 but at least I can wear heavy armor!
Edit 2: I'm still struggling with many things and wiki is only confusing me. I can't seem to level up in the Temple of Arkay rankings. I managed to get dispelled from the previous temple. I'm pretty sure one of my skills should be high enough. So I can't buy any potions. And just now one of them was absolutely required to finish a quest. I had to use a potion of levitation to float up a vertical shaft with no elevator. It was literally the only way to get there and the quest mob was there. Was struggling with that level for hours. I also learned that I have only 25 magic points. That allows me to cast... Basically one or two spells and some of them costs hundreds of points. And with the rate I level up, which is extremely slow, I can't spend my hard earned skill points on INT. And I think that even if I did, it wouldn't help much. So I basically can't heal myself. And I can't make potions or buy potions because I don't seem to rank up for some reason, but I'll have to research this subject a bit more. I also can't change the reaction speed so I'll either have to download a mod for that or tamper with the files as was recommended somewhere. It's quite disappointing that in order to have access to any of these services, you'll have to have a certain kind of build and join these guilds. Don't want to start a new character as I'm so invested in the current one, but I could probably catch up with it in half a day versus a few days that I have been playing and still only level 4 😂

I’m trying to play the game on Steam for the first time and I couldn’t be more disappointed. This game doesn’t seem to function in the state it’s downloadable in.
The options bar at the bottom of the screen completely obscures a huge section of a visibility (seriously you have to crouch to look at things on the ground), the combat doesn’t work (I can stand in front of a rat without getting any closer and be totally unable to hit it swinging in any direction), you can’t move backwards (because again the option buttons cover the bottom quarter of the screen so you can’t get the arrow to point backwards and move any faster than a stumble), and I took so much damage trying to fight the first rat that I’ve softlocked the tutorial which is insane.
I have to assume this is just a broken game in its release state.

It's one of the reasons I recommended downloading Daggerfall Unity and playing it through that instead as my first tip! The steam version alone doesn't do the game ANY justice.

your critique of the OG controls are bit out of place; it's one of the first game to ever implement a mouse base camera view, but it wasn't active by default and you had to change it yourself in the menu.

@@YourAverageBo i already play it, but with many mods. So i wasnt sure if it was the unity version itself or some mod that fixes many of the bugs 😂
Great game, i only knew oblivion and skyrim so far. I still feel nostalgic, i remember playing Might and Magic back in the day, which had a similar look.

Red Dead Redemption 2 also has a big open world, unlike Daggerfall it is actually worth exploring.

Unlike Daggerfall, RDR2 is not free, is much harder to run for a lot of people, *and literally isn't even the same kind of game lmao*

@@firestarter6488Yes not the same type of game, but they are both open world, also you can not argue against RDR2 selling almost 60 million copies. Daggerfall has merely sold 700.000-800.000 copies. That says it all, Daggerfall fans can hate such facts all day long, like Skyrim have currently sold more than 60 million copies. But somehow an outdated terrible looking Daggerfall is the best TES game?

@@AntarctideRDR2 has a tons of side quests and random encounters with a world map twice the size of Skyrim. And Zarics pitiful argument that Daggerfall is the size of Great Britain means didly squat, since it all looks the same with nothing unique.

I played this when it first came out. I found unity and I'm playing again... and it does not lay out a red carpet for you and show you where to go, no quest markers. I'm am so spoiled by modern games...lol. You have to read too OMG nooo!! JK.... awesome game. I'm getting my ass kicked a lot which is how is should be as a new toon. I can't get get the teleport spell yet... I need to some quests first. But, so many armor slots, magic items, clothes, weapons, armor, skills.... it's like they sacrificed all that detail for eye popping graphics... thanks for the video
