If you don't know about the Severn Valley Railway's purple locomotive, then where have you been?
In early 2022, the SVR announced it would be painting the former 34027 Taw Valley purple and renumber it No.70 to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
Since then, the locomotive has made a splash worldwide with constant social media buzz, newspaper columns and even a @HornbyModelRailways 0 gauge model! But why did the Severn Valley Railway take this huge leap of faith to paint the locomotive purple?
In this short video, we speak to the key members of the Severn Valley Railway team, No.70's owners and a few others about how the 'purple train' came around and why the locomotive was put into non-standard livery.

It won’t be long until taw valley and western courier will be back to their normal identities for the autumn
I'm not apposed to the colour change but do believe it should have been a much darker shade as it is more pink than purple as it is.
Still its biggest fan!!!!!!
Great video! Loved seeing it at the jubilee gala alongside lady of legend, western queen, ark royal and 2857! 👍🏻
Let’s have more wacky colours it’s all fun
Enjoyed the video very much DD.
What about a visit to the purple line between Reading and Paddington?
Geoff Marshall would be speechless (that'll be the day!)
Looks great, very brave thing to do but you got attention from all over the world. It’s also a great tribute to her majesty . I wish you could ship it to AUS for a tour, I would be there in a flash
I too wish we could ship it to Aus!
was hoping to see the actual process of "how it became purple" not watch a bunch of people talking 🙄
It's quite a difficult process really, you get your paint and your paint brush and you paint 🙄
I like Marmite, I’m not a fan of the choice of shade of Purple but it keeps the rust at bay and is good for the loco and the railway which is the most important thing. Well done SVR and the owners of the loco.
Talking about liveries. I’d like to see one of the 50s painted gloss black with polished steel numbers and BR arrows with a bit of silver/white banding similar to the LMS 10000.
Lovely! Wish I could see it in person
I personally like Taw Valley remaining in purple as it something nice for family including children as this is fantastic for them to see a steam loco in this kind of livery.
I’m planning to visit the railway (hopefully) next month to see this Taw Valley in purple. If you had industrial locomotive, I think that will be great to paint it in either purple or surprisingly pink as will make steam locos a lot nicer than just having heritage livery.
Oh dear me, lads.
No, not really😨
Yuk🤮, just sums up the way the world has gone. Whats next Mallard in Barbie Pink?
Sacralige all responsible should have their heads removed how could you do something like this to a great old lady looks like something out of Thomas the tank would you dress your old gran in that colour and send her out in the street like that please hurry up and re dress her properly and give her , her dignity back
Yes, an absolute joke. Hairdressers train comes to my mind.
Haha, I don't think the loco is going to be upset that its painted purple. Lol 😆 😂
Haha you wait till she refuses to come out of the shed one morning lol
