I dove with this guy 20 years ago from the coast of Roatan. I was a bit worried at first, the sub was not certified, and the guy was so young. On the dive day I saw him in a t-shirt with a text "dont be scared I've done in thousand times" - and that relaxed me a lot
@@imagiraffe2848 You must be kidding! Words on a shirt would not convince me to trust the guy wearing the shirt making thousands of dollars on my buying a ticket to ride!!
It could have also been: - Cracks in the epoxy/ delamination of carbon fiber layers. - Tension releasing as the carbon fiber and titanium contract and expand at different rates and their mated surfaces skip against eachother while under extreme pressure.
@@thecloneguyz Can only see articles of how NASA and Boeing are distancing themselves from the sub, I can't find anything about them building an identical sub and testing it. Do you have a title that I can search on?
This video is being slept on! I think this is the most informative video that has come out on the Titan sub, Karl has literally first hand knowledge from being on the actual sub. Not only that Karl knows his subs and what happens to them in the deep ocean. I love that he is a fellow Okie and is just telling it how it is, if you don’t like that then don’t come to OK. The insight that Karl is giving here should be apparent that if this case ever goes to court Karl will be called as a witness.
This was a fascinating interview. Karl Stanley knows his stuff. If Rush was told about the noises and it was even a remote possibility that the carbon fiber layers were separating, they surely they could have done ultrasonic scans or some kind of inspection to determine it's condition. That would be the bare minimum of due diligence. Sounds like Rush chose to ignore the concerns and instead chose to put lives at risk.
He cut lots of corners to save time and money. He was supposed to start taking passengers like a year before but the hull had a big crack. Even Stockton knew it would have to be replaced. When the new hull was ready it didn't go through tests the previous ones did. He refused the titanium rings that attached the front window to the hull instead of getting new ones made! And he modified these rings so there were hooks that could be used to lift the sub. It used to be moved using a sling around the hull to avoid stress and damage. The last sub wasn't lifted that way. The previous subs were dangerous enough but this last version was even less safe.
That is a great point regarding how much pressure Rush could have been with his investors…but hearing his sub cracking under the pressure and continuing to use it was criminal.
The Titan had to have a whole new hull made because the previous one had a big crack. But he cut so many corners fixing the sub it was way worse the previous versions of the Titan he had been using. He even reused the titanium rings instead of getting new ones made! And modified these rings so they had a hook that could be used to lift the sub. It used to be moved using a sling around the hull to not put stress on the vessel. Engineers would never approve lifting it in this new way. I think this new hull had only done one trip to Titanic before it imploded. The old Titan was dangerous enough but this rebuilt one was like a DIY job. Like building a house using duct tape instead of nails or screws. He had got rid of the engineers that actually tried to make the sub safe as they could.
Excellent interview. So GRACIOUS of Mr. Stanley to open up his home and give us INSIGHT into a world we could not have IMAGINED. Rare to get such honest, humble facts from someone still involved in a dangerous business. This man has a TRUE explorers heart.

The reason the government requires so many safety rules and regulations, is that it’s Navy has over 100 years of experience in submarines and deep sea pressure effects. The Navy and Coast Guard has evidence of past failures and accidents, and lost crews from past disasters. A wise person listens to the advise of those that have real knowledge in this field. The ocean floor is littered with lost submarines that taught us about what NOT to do.
This guy has more common sense in his pinky finger than Stockton had in his body and brain. Even after the whole Oceangate thing, I'd trust Karl's knowledge and sense to go in a submersible with him. Seems like a genuine bloke 👍
Oh my! Have been as many here, not even realizing that the mother ship had to have heard/felt it, have assumed the top crew was shocked, etc. Anybody besides me have considered a small but possible idea that the reason Oceangate didn't report the implosion was due to actually preplanning.....not to happen, but in the tragic event it did.....,if the company kept it secret for then.....they would have more of the navy and Coast Guard, etc unpaid help in the recovery. Probably he couldn't have afforded the recovery of the people on board. Hey.....what's this builder berg stuff 😵💫😵💫interesting!
Its such interesting insight that Stockton Rush valued his opinion over the other industry experts since he had also had made uncertified commercial subs, but ultimately still chose to ignore his warnings. I guess nobody could talk that man out of imploding himself and taking his customers with him, no matter how much sense they made

Fantastic interview! Awesome work getting the real skinny on the psychology of Stockton Rush and why Titan wasn’t sustainable. Karl Stanley, American Legend in the submersible world, shared the raw data from the inside.
This is such a great interview! I can’t believe it hasn’t blown up more than it has. Provides so much insight to understanding the mind of Rush, and why he didn’t heed the warnings of his friends and contemporaries, much less the literal ocean.
If I go into a sub, it'll be with this guy. He is relaxed confident and not posing. Rush tried to emulate this behavior but utterly failed in my opinion in interviews. It would be cool to see the titanic, but he was playing Russian roulette and I think he knew it on some level.
He HAD to know it. But being a risk taker by nature and narcissist, thereby not caring about risking others lives and desperately needing funding, Rush sold his passengers a big steaming pile of BS! Yeah he knew it was a big gamble but in his mind it's not his problem. He CLEARLY conveyed the experimental nature of Titan and the passengers were informed of the danger. He had fulfilled his obligations. In his mind, anyway.
With the advancement in camera technology and ROVs there is absolutely zero reason for anyone to go that deep! You can’t see much as the port holes are tiny and offer very little viewing ability! A ROV with a good camera will show you so much more of the wreck that it’s just stupidity imo that makes anyone want to go that deep and to go that deep in a carbon fiber body sub is suicidal!
@@theshadowbehindyou9631 um... did you read my comment? This guy doesn't go as deep, and he uses titanium and lots of experience. Rush literally rushed everything and didn't use common sense or even understood why the rules were in place to begin with. There's a place for maned subs and rov's
Hands down the best interview I've seen about the Titan . Sounds like Karl knows the ins and outs of the submersible world and his knowledge and explanation of what happened sounds spot on .
I saw in a video how they glued the titanium end caps to the carbon tube under non controlled conditions, literally brushing on the glue by hand in a dusty warehouse, not even wearing any anti dust clothing. Even gliders are made from prepregs under very controlled working conditions. Even a hair in such a wet layup or glue joint will lead to a weak spot.
Same for the carbon fiber itself - the resin was cured at atmospheric pressure. I know that's a bad idea just from watching resin-casting crafts videos here on youtube :p
I am not an engineer but the glue part doesn't bother me much, because the water pressure holds the parts in place, the glue was only there to hold it together at shallow depths and outside the water......in my humble opinion!

This is by far the best explanation or interview of the many I’ve watched. Thank you very much. Sounds like those who were in that small group knew that it was just a matter of time before that submersible failed.
I would not fault Stockton's passengers for going on that trip. He lied to them and was a charismatic person. Very difficult for a passenger without knowledge to realize that .
@@mitchb2305 Essentially his friends told him he was nuts and why was he getting on that thing with Rush and he told them it would be a wonderful way to pass. He was a recent widower and stopped caring about living.
He is just giving an insight in to why the man felt invulnerable and what drove him to evade rational thinking. The hull was built with different materials with different coefficients of elasticity . I am sad and angry mostly for the teen who went because of his father
He didn't feel invulnerable, he just didn't care. Stockton put all his stocks on his project and when his craft was not as advertised he didn't have enough money to go back to the drawing board. Those people died because he was trying to make money.
Of course it's Honduras. (Where else in the world can you operate an uncertified sub lmao) This guy at least knows his boundaries and respects physics, he won't risk his life or his passengers.
I can see this dude being called in as an expert and witness in a lawsuit that I do see coming in the near future. Those waivers that were signed were not legal if they did not disclose the entire truth. And yes, calling it the Titan was like putting a curse onto oneself. The CEO knew. I refuse to believe that he was clueless that the sub would fail. My opinion is that money was tight and he knew he had to push on with the ticket sales at all cost. He was banking on the sub lasting long enough for him to raise more money and maybe make modifications to the sub.

The unfortunate part of this whole situation is that, as preventable as it was, it was bound to happen. The news is covering this tragedy like crazy, but they never would have bothered picking up a story of a "possible disaster" for something like the Titan. Without the tragedy, there's nothing "newsworthy" to the media. Anyone who sounded alarms was fired, threatened, etc. It's senseless to blame anyone but Rush for this. Plenty of people tried to stop him, but only his beloved sub Titan could stop him in a cruel and unusual twist of fate. His insistence on bringing others down with him and the way he aggressively pursued people and their wallets - that's what's truly horrible about this.

2 guys sitting on a wharf in some tropical island have given me more information on the Titan sub that ALL of every single piece of data I have read since the sub went down ... Thank you for uploading this video.
Finally, someone who says the ship must’ve heard the implosion.
Heard and felt.
James Cameron also said it would've been heard i believe. Not 100% sure.
Yeah, they had to have heard and felt it. Many are saying it was like a big ass bomb going off and they didn't feel it or hear it. Not only that but they waited eight hours before calling the Coast Guard. WTF!
Fascinating interview. I am quite impressed with Mr. Karl Stanley. He made many intelligent and thoughtful observations. You have to admire a man who is this dedicated to sharing the magical world under the sea with others that most of us don't know and doing so safely. I like how well the interviewer allowed Mr. Stanley to express his thoughts without all the interruptions so common in short television interviews.
I agree I thought it was a really good, interesting interview.
………..I’m quite sure Mr. Stanley would agree.
And just remember Ace, it’s going to be one crowded submersible…….you, Karl and his ego……
good luck interrupting this guy, he didn't even let the interviewer finish a single question i think, all due respect
He got to plug his own company, which is good for him
Check out the video ACE did on his sub trip. Pretty cool and it looked very safe. No gunshot noises...lol
I dove with this guy 20 years ago from the coast of Roatan. I was a bit worried at first, the sub was not certified, and the guy was so young. On the dive day I saw him in a t-shirt with a text "dont be scared I've done in thousand times" - and that relaxed me a lot
😂 no way!!!
@@imagiraffe2848 You must be kidding! Words on a shirt would not convince me to trust the guy wearing the shirt making thousands of dollars on my buying a ticket to ride!!
The person being interviewed just blew me away with the wealth of knowledge he freely gave !!!!! Awesome interview, WOW !!!!!!
Yea, and he likes dogs too.
The bangs were carbon fibers breaking. Each dive broke more and more fibers. Eventually the weakened hull failed
It could have also been:
- Cracks in the epoxy/ delamination of carbon fiber layers.

You cannot do ultrasound on carbon fiber since it isn't able to transmit ultrasonic waves - you would need to do an x-ray.
The profit motive was more important and of course his own vanity, nothing could be allowed to stand in the way of his own self perceived glory
That is a great point regarding how much pressure Rush could have been with his investors…but hearing his sub cracking under the pressure and continuing to use it was criminal.
this is i think the main reason he seemed so pushy about it
There’s no tangible evidence this is true. Sounds happen under water. This guy being interviewed even said he couldn’t see the pressure hull failing.
@@deaf2819 re: "and nobody will ever really know."
Says every carbon fiber tube constructed, and crushed with external force, ever ...
@@deaf2819 Kinda weird he couldn’t see it failing when a engineer told OceanGate that exact scenario would happen in freaking 2018.

Stanley has been doing this since he was 16. And he’s still here to tell his many and varied tales.
Wow
But why is his sub not classed?
The reason the government requires so many safety rules and regulations, is that it’s Navy has over 100 years of experience in submarines and deep sea pressure effects. The Navy and Coast Guard has evidence of past failures and accidents, and lost crews from past disasters. A wise person listens to the advise of those that have real knowledge in this field. The ocean floor is littered with lost submarines that taught us about what NOT to do.
All of those are stricken from ww1/2

Well copious rules and regs aren't needed in every entity in our society. Too many superflous lawyers!!! Imo
Don't let the Germans exist?
Except for the fact that they were doing this in international waters where they're really isn't any government restriction
I appreciate this interview with Karl he is such a bold honest person.
He did not TRY to warn. He DID warn of its downfall.
This guy has more common sense in his pinky finger than Stockton had in his body and brain. Even after the whole Oceangate thing, I'd trust Karl's knowledge and sense to go in a submersible with him. Seems like a genuine bloke 👍
😬a broke bloke
Carl Stanley's commentary on this is beyond spectacular! I thoroughly enjoyed listening to him speak.❤
Its such interesting insight that Stockton Rush valued his opinion over the other industry experts since he had also had made uncertified commercial subs, but ultimately still chose to ignore his warnings. I guess nobody could talk that man out of imploding himself and taking his customers with him, no matter how much sense they made
$$$$ and fame ….
I kinda feel that at the subconscious level, Stockton had a death wish to be entombed near the Titanic wreck.
Rush fabricated a new hull AFTER this dive with Stanley. It’s not the same submersible.
This guy totally nailed it. He made it all make sense to the average person. Best information I've had. 👌
Mr. Stanley, you tried your best to warn Stockton but he refused to listen! Thank you for your efforts!
It must have been like talking to a post.
Amen…Well said!
That porthole only being certified for like 1500 meters literally made my jaw drop.

Not even the military’s most advanced subs have portholes and they go nowhere near that deep so that should say enough lol
I think Navy subs go around 400meterd deep?

Fantastic interview! Awesome work getting the real skinny on the psychology of Stockton Rush and why Titan wasn’t sustainable.
Karl Stanley, American Legend in the submersible world, shared the raw data from the inside.
This is such a great interview! I can’t believe it hasn’t blown up more than it has.
Provides so much insight to understanding the mind of Rush, and why he didn’t heed the warnings of his friends and contemporaries, much less the literal ocean.
But also please be safe. I don’t think I would trust any privately made sub with my body 😬
If I go into a sub, it'll be with this guy. He is relaxed confident and not posing. Rush tried to emulate this behavior but utterly failed in my opinion in interviews. It would be cool to see the titanic, but he was playing Russian roulette and I think he knew it on some level.
This guy and James Cameron
Agree
The glue would have been worn down by salt water according to sum it could’ve been an adhesive issue
Really ? wow 😢that’s crazy!
I was stunned at that as well, normal every day clothes and no atmospheric control
I am not an engineer but the glue part doesn't bother me much, because the water pressure holds the parts in place, the glue was only there to hold it together at shallow depths and outside the water......in my humble opinion!
What a well informed sub owner. I very glad he fallows regulations and safety rules. Bravo for caring for his and clients wellbeing and safety.

thing about Stockton is that he wasn't even passionate about the sea, his original dream was to go to space but he quickly realised that was too complicated for him to do. The dude just wanted to make some sort of impact in the world and be famous like he ancestors. i think he was achieved that now that even our children here in Africa know who he is

What a well put together video! Good to hear another designer other than Cameron weigh in on this as well, despite the unsurprising fact that he pretty much drew the same conclusions. How could Rush ignore so many of his expert peers?
