Stockton Rush created the most amazing death trap. It was good enough to dive down to the Titanic a few times as a proof of concept (so people are okay going in it) but not good enough to survive 8, 9, 10 or more dives. I'm not an engineer but I work with carbon fiber for a living. I know that carbon fiber has virtually no crush strength. The loud noises were the carbon laminate breaking. In something that large there are millions of carbon strand fibers. Carbon fiber is just a fiber reinforced plastic. The plastic being the epoxy resin. The resin bonds that held the strands together were snapping under the pressure.

When the new hull was ready it didn't go through tests the previous ones did. He refused the titanium rings that attached the front window to the hull instead of getting new ones made! And he modified these rings so there were hooks that could be used to lift the sub. It used to be moved using a sling around the hull to avoid stress and damage. The last sub wasn't lifted that way. The Titan had to have a whole new hull made because the previous one had a big crack. But he cut so many corners fixing the sub it was way worse the previous versions of the Titan he had been using. He even reused the titanium rings instead of getting new ones made! And modified these rings so they had a hook that could be used to lift the sub. It used to be moved using a sling around the hull to not put stress on the vessel. Engineers would never approve lifting it in this new way.
I think this new hull had only done one trip to Titanic before it imploded. The old Titan was dangerous enough but this rebuilt one was like a DIY job. Like building a house using duct tape instead of nails or screws. He had got rid of the engineers that actually tried to make the sub safe as they could.

The CEO knew. I refuse to believe that he was clueless that the sub would fail. My opinion is that money was tight and he knew he had to push on with the ticket sales at all cost. He was banking on the sub lasting long enough for him to raise more money and maybe make modifications to the sub.

The most authentic interview - chapeau! Better than a "professional" journalist, you never interrupted him, but let him talk and let the information come out as it came out. That's all it's about - today's professional journalists always feel the need to guide the interviewee through the interview, but do it from their subjective perspective, even though we all just want to know the authentic information that can only come from the interviewee himself. And you super gave him the space to just speak. After following the news about this story, this interview was the most refreshing, nourishing - and I could actually stop following the story because this one provided so much background information, it's perfect. ACE, great job. Super cool

The unfortunate part of this whole situation is that, as preventable as it was, it was bound to happen. The news is covering this tragedy like crazy, but they never would have bothered picking up a story of a "possible disaster" for something like the Titan. Without the tragedy, there's nothing "newsworthy" to the media. Anyone who sounded alarms was fired, threatened, etc. It's senseless to blame anyone but Rush for this. Plenty of people tried to stop him, but only his beloved sub Titan could stop him in a cruel and unusual twist of fate. His insistence on bringing others down with him and the way he aggressively pursued people and their wallets - that's what's truly horrible about this.
