*Black Holes* is not about breaking up from a relationship. It's a song about a person, *who's begging for help* as they're *failing from their addiction.*
Dany is singing the undertone voice every time they play *Black Holes* live. Which is very rare..
Pau wrote this song when she was 13 years. Heard is was about an family friend who was slipping from their addiction.

I'm standing directly in front of Pau,maybe 3 feet away,in the Whisky video. I can tell you for a fact that there wasn't a dry eye in the place when she finished. You honestly have to experience them live to truly understand their power, it's not the same as in the videos. I've been going to concerts for 50+ years and have never felt like this band makes me feel at a live show and I've seen them 3 times,it's almost a spiritual experience! Flying to LA from Ohio for the 3rd time to see them again! ⚡⚡⚡

A 13-year-old Pau writing about the horrors of addiction. Amazing insight. From what the girls have said they have never experienced any of the things they write about (except maybe Animosity). They're well-read and socially aware. And Pau pours her heart into every performance of this song.

Every time I hear this song I'm amazed by how gifted these three are ,that they can feel things completely out side of their lives. Having been there, I HOPE no one else goes through lonely, hopelessness of addiction in any form! That line " and the venom starts to swallow me whole" is so on point! I still get teared up even after all these listening's and I'm not the only one as I've seen grown burly men reaching for hand kerchiefs. These ladies are truly special!

As mentioned below, Pau wrote this song about addiction based on either something she read, or a family acquaintance, depending on which story you’ve heard. Not sure why Roy requested these two performances rather than the more popular one from the Dakota Bar, but appreciated your reaction and analysis nonetheless. 😎

  • @NoSmokingDogs

The first performance (at UVM) was a little rough but as usual the girls powered through it. It's always a surprise when a reactor doesn't use the gold standard performance for this song, that being the one from the Dakota Bar. The Whiskey performance had OK audio but not as good as the Dakota Bar. That being said, it appears your focus on this video was to compare the 2017 performance to the 2019 one to see how their voices have developed over those years. It will be really interesting to see if they perform this at their upcoming Troubadour shows.

The 2019 performance was definitely a friendly and knowledgeable crowd. If I remember correctly, this was essentially a private concert that was auctioned on Kickstarter (I wasn't Warned at the time, and I don't live anywhere near LA, not that the latter ever stopped people from going).
I don't remember which concert it was, but there was one performance where Pau stopped singing during the final chorus for a few bars so she could hear the audience singing.
At the Dakota Bar performance, Pau was smiling much of the time, which isn't exactly what the song is about. I suspect that the audience reaction was so powerful that even though she was singing it was evident what was going on, and she was soaking up the moment.

The empathy their lyrics exude is what impresses me. Even if they don't have first-hand experience they are aware of the pains others endure. Also, it's amazing the power they can create without the drums. Of course, Pau is using the percussive sound a piano offers.

I think the live performance at The Dakota Bar was the best recording however I like that this one was chosen as it shows a couple things that make The Warning so good. One, of course is that Pau is such an amazing musician not only on the drums but as a vocalist and pianist. Two Pau had a couple gaffs with remembering the lyrics, she didn't melt down and stop playing, she didn't make an awkward facial expression no, she powered on and continued like nothing happened. A true pro...
The Warning has stated that they try to write their song as ambiguous as possible while still trying to maintain a cohesive theme or story so the listener can get whatever message they feel from their songs. Having said that Paulina wrote this song at the age of 13 after reading a story in the newspaper about addiction and the affects it has on the people the addict has in their life. These girls are wise beyond their years and so friggin' talented!!!

This is a beautiful song and Pau is doing it great. She has such a good voice for singing this. It´s interesting to see how the other girls already have begun to find their stage moves. Ale behind Pau, she is constantly moving and she already has the steps for the dance she still does all the time. She never stands 100% still, and this si what makes my eyes move in her direction. No matter how good the other girls are, Ale steals your interest. Three sisters with different personalities but one soul, they give the band that special touch.
The clip from the Whisky is better when it comes to the sound. Pau smiles in the beginning but it´s not because she isn´t moved by her song. She smiles because she notices the crowd is singing with her.

Thanks for the cool insight! After listening to them on repeat for years now, I can tell you my observations. Dany has a "brighter" tone (pitch? timber? not sure the correct term) to her voice than Pau. Pau is more of a "Broadway Belter" type of a voice. Ale has a more soulful tone and not as powerful as her sisters (She reminds me of Chrissy Hynde from The Pretenders). And you will also notice that Pau has a natural rasp and a lisp on her "S's" that Dany and Ale don't. It may be because Pau's teeth are a bit crooked and they didn't want to interrupt her natural singing progression and performance with Braces. Their mother is a dentist, so I am sure this must have come up, at some point. Perhaps Invisalign in the future, just for her oral health? Anyway, their harmonies are great because of the similarity AND the slight differences in their voices.

@@cuesphyx1820 I don't think that a vocal coach could care less about accent/enunciation/pronunciation since they mostly teach how you breathe, store your air, to get the most out of your singing. In other words, they can teach someone to sing/growl in any language as long as they know what sound you want to produce.
