That pincer move from the 2 incoming Flankers was quite well executed for AI. Without the situational awareness, your chances were very little from the start. Great fight and great video 🤘
Sure, you lost the MiG, but you took out two Flankers and two Frogfoots, spoiled the enemy strike mission, and you ejected... safely? As long as you make it back to friendly lines unhurt and they have another jet, I'd call that a success.
Hi Longshot. This technique was tried by Serbian (Yougoslav) Air Force in 1999 against NATO planes. It didn't work well. They too were flying on Mig-29A but with GCI. The problem was AWACS. As soon as MIGs were airborne they were detected by AWACS and an interception package was directed on them (pair of F-15s). MIGs were shot with AIM-120 in BVR fight In your mission Russian side had A-50 which should have had detected you but it didn't. Once detected R-77 would have entered into the play with the interception package. Mig-29A is out of its league. It is a plane suited for 1980-1990 air war not for modern conflict. Never the less it was a good video.
This is not a mig29a this is a mig29s , true he wouldnt have stood a chance but migs are definitely not old the UPG and SMT variant especially even if ukraine had F-16s in this situation it wouldnt have mattered
One of my favourite aviation novels was written back in the 1970's by a bloke called Derick Robinson, called "Goshawk Squadron", and covers the attempt in 1918 of a very dysfunctional squadron commander called Augustus Wolley to teach his replacement pilots the realities of war in the air. (it won the Booker Prize the year it was published). In it, Wolley tries to hammer into his "Sporting and Chivalrous" public schoolboys the idea that it's all about "Sneaking up on the other poor bastard, shooting him in the back and then running away before his friends realise you're there". This, Sir, was a textbook example of just that. You are a certified Arial Assassin. Beautifull. The first warning that strike package had that you were there was when they started blowing up. Absolutely beautiful.
I think the pinecones in your radar dish from running so close to the trees is what hampered you from finding them. Nice intercept on the attack package though!
Would be interesting to see some variation of this with a more realistic/limited loadout. Ukraine's jets dont have any Fox-3s. The Migs have only had R-27ERs (2x R27, 4x R73), with Flankers generally having a mixed load of R-27ER, R-73, and a pair of R-27ETs (Pics of the one that flew to Romania on night one are a good resource. That jet had 5x R27ER, 1x R-27ET under the right wing only, and 4x R-73). Could similarly get a wingman and do air defense vs cruise missiles, something they've been using their jets for a lot, and where much of the "dogfight" footage has come from.
