"Haydar Haydar," performed by Ali Ekber Çiçek, is a deeply spiritual piece rooted in Alevi-Bektashi tradition. The song reflects themes of inner journey, the transient nature of worldly pleasures, and the pursuit of of truth.
Ali Ekber Çiçek’s rendition blends these mystical themes with traditional Anatolian folk music, creating a reflective and emotional experience that highlights the core values of Alevi spirituality.

'......."In the assembly of the forty ( "Kırklar cemi" is a highly significant ritual in Alevism. The number forty holds symbolic importance, representing a community, congregation, or a cycle.), O friend Haydar, I presented myself for judgment before the community in the sacred gathering'.... is totally misleading. 'Kırklar cemi' is related with prophet Muhammad and his son in law 'Hz. Ali'. That's why the story of 14000 years comes to the narrative.
'......."In the assembly of the forty ( "Kırklar cemi" is a highly significant ritual in Alevism. tamamen yanıltıcıdır. 'Kırklar cemi' Hz. Muhammed ve damadı 'Hz. Ali' ile ilgilidir. Bu yüzden 14000 yıllık hikaye anlatıya gelir.

The ancestor of baglama is Kopuz, whose name is frequently mentioned in Dede Korkut stories. Kopuz, which has a history of approximately 1500 years and encompasses multiple types of stringed instruments, was used by the Turkish Tribes in Central Asia. It first came to Anatolia through the wandering poets of that region.
Ali Ekber Çiçek is one of the baglama masters. The folk song "Haydar Haydar" is remembered with him. The easy way to understand whether a person plays baglama at a good level is to ask him to play "Haydar haydar". It is a piece that is not easy to play. Thanks for your sharing.

The American analogue of it will stand somewhere between bluegrass and gospel, or mainly categorized as a folk song. The main import of the song is the lyrics, the poetry, even though Çiçek [pronounced chi-cheque] was a master of the instrument. It has a "spread the message" quality, though not "church music", and he explores metaphysical themes prevalent in Alevism, which is a particular blend of Anatolian Islam, where the potentially antimonian or esoteric aspects of its mysticism is much toned down. Themes of peace, friendship, solidarity, love of nature, dissent comes out a lot, as there's a historical experience to fall back on, in addition to what you may call standards or the songbook in the particular genre. I wouldn't dare a translation or an exposition but I just wish to note that its more sung poetry than anything instrumental. Hedy West and her banjo, that's it.

This is a Turkish Alevi Pray and these kind of music is used in Turkish Alevi Cem Pray 🙏 ceremony. The lyrics are very deep and impossible to translate as Turkish is very different and Alevi poetry is too complicated to translate. This song is about the creation, life and the history the glimpses have too many meanings. It is poetry with philosophy. Turkish Alevi poetry and music prays are like gospels with extremely deep meanings people learn Turkish to understand Alevi Philosophy. You can listen to ''Dodan'' cover and other covers of this pray and that can help you feel it more even without understanding Turkish. And it is not just the lyrics the music is also telling the story, the history the struggle, the horses, the life the existence of human being and the soul but you need to know Turkish and the Alevism to be able to understand more.
Alevism is a liberal peaceful lifestyle a highly different religious interpretation, Alevis pray in Turkish with these songs and with a pray dance called Semah.

Probably you have never heard about Alevism or Alevis. some people consider it the most liberal sect of Islam and some people consider it as a different religion but a fusion of Islam, Christianity, and Tengrism. As an atheist who was born in an Alevi family, I think it's a different religion. It is only practised in Anatolia and the Balkans. Our worship ceremonies include this kind of song.

The musicality of the Haydar Haydar idiom is excellent. But there is more to this "deyiş" than that. Like all religious Turkish music, this "deyiş" is not about everyday life. To fully grasp it, one must know Turkic gnosticism and mysticism (Bektashism, Kizilbashism, Bayramism, Melamism, Mevlevism ....). The lyrics of the poem belong to the Kizilbash poet Aşık Sıtkı Baba.
Deyiş: It is a form in Turkish religious music. Other Turkish religious music forms are "Kaside", "Nefes", "İlahi", "Ayin"....

Amongst the top nocth skill in baglama playing, this is not a music to enjoy guys, this is called "deyiş" which means "something to tell", they are all very deep words, generally dedicated to the god in the journey to find the real truth. So you can't dance while it is played, just try to listen and try to get what it says. This culture is coming from the old religion of Turkic people leaving in Middle Asia which believed in God of the Sky or Shamanism. When they conqured Anatolia, the believes are mixed with islam and fused into this form. It is a bit shamanism, a bit Shiism, mainly called Bektaşilik in Anatolia. The words are so ancient, and so deep even for Turks, you should take your time to understand what it says.

Voices, words, music, rhythms are related to the culture you live in. An American ear wouldn't understand the sound of the instrument Ali Ekber is playing, because there is certain expressions that similar to people's talking. Hnece, it is normal if you don't find nice for yourself. His voice, in our culture what Morgan Freeman's voice in yours, it is not creepy, it is y our thought that creepy.

The lyrics are interesting, at least Israel/arab is more interesting than religions, its mysticism. I wandered in space for 14 years (or 14000) and got my real name in madness.

Alevis are not Muslims. Unfortunately, they were attacked many times by Muslims. Maraş massacre, Çorum massacre and Sivas massacre are massacres that took place in the last 40 years. They often had to live away from the city, where they found it safe. An average of 200 religious attacks occur in Turkey every year. Some of those attacked were Alevi, some were Christian, some were atheist or somehow non-Muslim. One of the distinctive features of Alevis is that we do not have a holy book.
