What Barron said about fire essentially being sunlight - mind-blowing poetry! I'm gonna have to sit with that all day.
This is fascinating. I don't understand everything Barron says, but just bearing witness to troubleshooting, thought experiments, and physical trial and error makes me appreciate how thoughtful y'all have to be in this lifestyle. The problem solving for living off grid is wild.
I like this format, beautiful blend of info and storytelling - great narrative Elsa!
Check with your home insurance company to make sure that they will continue to insure your home with solar on the ROOF. Example in Florida many insurance companies are canceling home owner insurance including hurricane insurance due to hurricane winds that could damage the solar than in turn the solar panels could damage the home roof.
I love that Barron is an integral part of the videos now. He is so intelligent and interesting. I remember Elsa saying many years ago. that Barron felt awkward and didn’t really know what to say in the videos but slowly, and surely over the years, he has got there. I was so pleased when Elsa changed the RUclips channel name to include Barron as that felt a real step forward in the journey together. I was absolutely fascinated about the sunlight when burning the wood. This is something I am definitely going to be looking up and learning more about. Thank you Barron for peaking my interest.
It's clear Barron is brilliant. The research that was done is wild. So happy for you both for this next level.
❤
Absolutely no idea what the hell Barron is talking about. But I’m enjoying the fun details like Camp, the sound of the fire and your amazing home.
Haha! I came here to say the same thing!
I know, right!?! It’s hard to get passed the visual appeal of Adonis Baron😊
…and that crotch
Same for me.
I didn't get it either, but watching all this do it yourself work has inspired me. I shall figure out his teachings🤣👍
Solark is a company of military engineers. All their components are designed to work together. I remember their customer service being exceptional. Love watching someone assemble this system. I hope you sell a billion of them
Really loved the time-lapsed watercolor. Beautiful, Elsa!
Thank you so much 😀
After watching these two for years, moving their solar panels to catch the most rays, being frugal with their energy expenditure, sometimes going without any electricity at all, it is SO immensely gratifying to see them have this incredible solar set up now. Even though this video was very educational, for me, it was more emotional because of the momentous achievement they have accomplished! Congrats to both of you, Barron & Elsa!
🥹🫶🏼🙌🏼
Good job. I'm installing a 30Kwatt system now. Just an FYI, you will want to double your solar panel's because of low winter sun yields. Summer gives gobs of power. Everyone should design their solar system based on winter conditions.
I think that's very wise advice.🎉🎉🎉
I absolutely disagree!
This is the main problem in solar power you never know how long an deep are the 'winter conditions' your system can be too small ever. Use grid power or generator power if you will be offgrid!
My advice water cooled diesel generator for heating.
If you guys are planning to do any canning a propane stove is probably the best way to go. Induction is not great because the glass can crack. You also need specific cookware for them. Great job on the solar!!
Agreed. I took a canning class last year and they advised not canning on an induction or glass top stove. Flame heat only.
Could they not use an induction for general cooking as they have a solar set up and use a gas Camping stove for their Canning???
@@sparsh415I agree since they will be using solar for electricity induction would be good for regular use. There are some great camp stoves that would work with propane outside where it doesn’t heat up the house. My stove has an induction cooktop with a convection oven that also has air fry. That’s another small appliance that can be eliminated from the countertop. It also eliminates the need to do such small batches in a regular air fryer.
I changed my RV to propane ondemand hot water. It's so great- I love it!
Amazing!!
Barron you are so intelligent! You break things down so easily ❤❤ loved the entire episode
I loved Barron's "fireside Chat" !
An awesome setup. Glad you were able to have them sponsor you
❤❤❤
We have had solar water heating for 16 years - our tubes heat glycol that then transfers the heat into our tank. The glycol works really well because it can still heat if it’s below freezing, but sunny. We have a fan cooled radiator when we’re making too much hot water. I looove my endless hot water in summers. Our big tank does use a single electric element we turn it on when we need to augment during dark dreary days. Hope you’re not in the path of any wild fires. Wishing y’all continued success with your solar system.
Love this! Looks like a great system! Barron comparing solar panels to trees in the beginning, along with scientific breakdown was pretty awesome. You and Elsa are a great team! Thanks for another great video!
I have an LP on demand water heater. LOVE IT.
If Elsa plans to do any pressure canning or water bath canning, LP will give her better control over the heat. Congratulations on getting power!!!!
Ugh now I'm itching to get around to the solar on my camper, way to be an inspiration you guys!
Great! Now that you have this all installed, I recommend getting an EMF Meter and seeing how much is emittting from those power banks so you can insolate accordingly. You don't want all that wonderful power to eventually harm you.
*Happy Anniversary Elsa and Barron!!* *#elsarhaeandbarron*
What a great video! Thanks for sharing! I'm on year # 12 living full time in a small RV. I do like using the water tank, and love having propane for cooking and heating water. It's nice to have, especially for an emergency heat source. I am still using my now 21 year old Atwood RV 6 gallon water heater. Never fails. I turn it on for about a half hr which gives plenty for 2 quick showers and dishes. Then I turn it off until tomorrow. Propane stoves and ovens are so reliable. Enjoy....You guys are so cool. 😎
It's so much fun to see you push into the next phase of life!
The amount of patience it has taken to spend the needed time at each point in your journey...
Living fully but frugally in the Scamp.
Gathering the funds you needed to even begin to look at land.
Finding your community.

🏡 ☀️ 🐕 🐕 ☀️ 🏡
Congratulations Guys 🎉🎉 This Changes Everything. Cant Wait To See Elsa In That Kitchen Making Her Delicious Recipes 😋 😍. Barron U My Friend R Soo Damn Smart N Very Inspirational Man . Thank U Guys For Sharing Your Life Of Adventures. Im Very Excited n Happy For U ❤❤🐕🦮
LOVE LOVE LOVE THE PLANTER 🏺💐
Look at Rheem water heaters, they are more expensive but pay for themselves. They have all kinds of systems. The tanks are insulated like a yeti cooler so they hold temp really well without pulling a lot of power. We have ours set up on an off peak program through our electric co-op and we’re never out of hot water.
Baron, it’s all double Dutch to me when it comes to “that stuff” maybe you missed your calling and should have been a teacher/tutor. Your simple yet informative intro was “tip top” thank you. Love watching the progress you guys are making and the home you are building together. Bravo to you both. Sending positive vibes from the U.K. 😊
Same way I mounted my solar on the tiny house, the uni-strut is a great setup that makes reconfiguring super easy. Great job bro! ❤
Yay, power!!!!! So happy for you! And Barron, you killed it! I ❤ that geeky brain of yours! (I can say this cuz I’m old) I love Elsa, too, of course- her artistic creativity and joyful personality is something very special. You kids! ❤
My personal belief is that you are better mounting the panels vertically. Much closer to the right angle in the winter when collection hours are shorter and no problem with snow buildup.
Yeah solar!!☀️I would choose the induction stove. Gas pollutes indoor air and solar is free
I don't speak that language but it sounds about right.
I love when geeks be geeking. 🤯
An interesting video on solar stuff that I can hardly understand at all but I still enjoyed the visit. Thanks all.
Yes, it is fascinating .
Your journey & house build have been informative & enjoyable the way you discuss how & why you do projects.
Thank You
Take care
💙🕊
I love the tree and leaf reference Baron, i love how you think. Also really enjoying your book. Thank you for making available in print. I am one of those that likes to hold a book and write notes in 'em. A real treat for me. Thank you.
Yeah they're real cool people.. I like their channel
Awesome seeing you guys getting the solar and batteries hooked up. Honestly the meatballs and ice cream looked like more fun, but I know y’all will be happy having the solar array and batteries. Appreciate the post about battleborn batteries led us down the path of what to replace in our travel trailer. Wishing you both the best ✌️
I’ve been watching y’all since literally the beginning and get so excited when you post
I dream of living like you guys! I love y’all like I know y’all!!!!💗💗💗
Thanks so much for being here for so long! You're amazing
Your house is really cool ❤ your living your dream ❤ . We adopted a dog 🐕 like yours . Sheba
😮 amazing info about the sunlight.
So awesome that you share all you've learned so thoroughly ✌️reppin from KCMO!!
Always lovely projects yall are working on! Congrats on the solar upgrade. Baron and his dads laugh is adorable and iconic.
😮😮Barron has a new title Barron's snake rescue. Love it
A great learning adventure today...
Thanks!
C ya on the next video!
👍🐺🧙♂️🤙
love love love love love that you saved the snake
I have to admit I didn't understand what Barron was talking about (electricity wise). I absolutely loved his enthusiasm though
You guys have created such a wonderful, warm and supportive community- Linnea making dinner and Barron giving hugs to all his buds is just the best.🍃🌸🍃 (Barron, research elevation with propane stove/oven. You probably just need longer cooking time.).
❤❤❤
I'm so happy for you guys, well done Barron on getting the solar setup. Looking forward to more videos on your setup.
I'm not a pro
But I like having my small propane oven and cook top
It can be natural gas or propane but being rural it's nice to know I can always cook and it was affordable and uses not alot of propane
I have been using a propane stove for 2 years because I live off grid too in a tiny home, I love my propane stove it heats things up so quickly it's very efficient and I don't find it uses a whole lot of propane especially if you're just using the burners and not the oven. I also have a direct vent propane heater as well as a direct vent propane water heater, both I like very much, I don't use much hot water either so it's perfect. I should mention too there's these "containers" that you can get that hook onto the side of your wood stove that heat water and they have a valve on it so you can have hot water all the time for your tea or coffee which is pretty cool 🌅
I started small and built my own solar generator (now known as a power station?) and have built a couple other small solar power systems, so watching this one come together was pretty cool!!
Also, I saw the video when Linnea created that jar/vase, so the convergence of Elsa and Linnea’s talents with the watercolor of Linnea’s pottery was quite satisfying. Thanks for sharing.
Fabulous!!! Fun episode, I loved all of it!!
Something that struck me seeing you install the batteries under your stairs: Maybe give some thought to fire escape from your bedroom. Maybe an emergency ladder from the sliding glass door, I dunno.
I’m concerned about that as well. With the chemicals in the batteries I would want them in a building separate from the house.
They're LiFePo. Very very safe.
I wouldn't have been able to understand what Barron was talking about if i saw this prior to me doing some upgrades to the solar on our cargo trailer conversion. I definitely think this video will be helpful to others in the future. Especially just giving them confidence to tackle an install on their own.
As far as appliances i would have to recommend a propane stove for primary use. There's just nothing like cooking on fire! You could always have a one or two burner induction stove that is used when you want to take advantage of the solar power.
Nice job of installing. You'll probably have to brush the snow off the panels in winter, but you'd have to do the same if they were on the ground. I would think they'd get more sun on the roof.
Here we go ✌️
Barron you are a great host❤ you explained it very well😊 I really enjoyed it. I'm so happy y'all have all that power. just looking at your property all around you when you're sitting outside it's very beautiful❤ I don't know how in the world you get so close to them snakes I'm going to call you the snake Whisperer❤ I would be scared they would jump on me😢 I'm glad you let them live❤ Elsa you're such a good artist❤ the picture was so pretty that you painted❤ I enjoyed this video. See y'all in the next one😊
Modern gas stoves have electrical ignition so you’ll use very, very little propane. The older stoves had a pilot light which used a high amount of propane. I have a small tall cylinder of propane for my Bosch and it lasts me 3.5 years. I used a cylinder every three months with my old stove. Quite a difference.
Linnea being like "am I allowed?" like a lil kid waiting for treats cracked me up
L❤VE this so much!! Crazy coincidence, just as I was about to type "I can't wait to show this to my electrician husband, Dyle," Barron said "dialed in!" Kinda trippy! 😂
Congratulations on the solar power install! So happy for both of you!
Incredible how I know absolutely nothing about something I use everyday…. Great video , thank you for walking us through it.
This is what makes me glad that I studied the sciences
Kewl Baron! Even my non-analytical mind can understand what you are saying!
Interesting!
You two bring heart happiness to me! TY!
🙏🏻
Loved this video. I learned so much. Loved that Barron took most of this video explaining many things. At the end...I knew that Elsa was right-handed. She painted left-handed and I guess it was the reverse shot. I don't know. Loved the picture :)
I don't know if you all will even see this or not but I'll tell ya about anyway. I know how you both want to stay off grid as much as possible but when I saw you hooking up your solar post yesterday it got me to thinking. Barron said you were thinking of propane or electric hot water heaters. Years ago when I was little our electric hot water heater caught on fire and my dad didn't want to risk it happening again so he just took it out, anyways he was some what of an inventor and for winter he built a woodburning hot water heater.he found a water tank with a flume going up the middle of it built a fire box to have a fire in and welded them together and hooked water to it it helps heat the house in the winter and they have hot water. In the summertime they have solar hot water. He took an old side by side refrigerator and put two water tanks that he painted black inside and covered it with a sliding glass door pointed it south and you basically have hot water all summer long. He passed a few years ago but my mom still uses this system to heat water. Sorry the post is so long but I hope it helps.
Our local dairy started an ice cream stand on the farm. For birthdays I drive out and buy several different pints and we have an ice cream buffet. The birthday guy/girl gets their own pint, no sharing. 🙂
Hi. Watching this with my electrician husband….a few minutes into the video he says, ”that was a good intro”. 😂👍
From an Electrical Engineer, for a DIY project, that solar installation is fine. Like you said, you gave the reasoning for the flat vs angled solar panel etc, and that hopefully, a certified electgrician will come inspect it later etc, etc.
Only thing that I would have recommended (not seeing it, but it may be there. If it is, then ignore), would have been a battery disconnect breaker for each 48V battery bank.
ELSA IS AN AMAZING ARTIST 🩵🩶🩵
I installed a ASHP Water Heater in February of this year. I only had a 120 VAC outlet nearby so used a Rheem 120 VAC 50 Gal. unit. It's in the garage here in Reno, NV so it was 47 degrees in February, and it used about 4 kWh per day. During the summer months it would be 74 to 80 degrees in the garage and only uses about 2 to 2.5 kWh per day. I keep the water temp at 137 during the day and switch to 130 at night. We are 2 retired people, and it has worked without any issues. Our inlet temp is probably near 70 in summer but much colder in the winter. I don't see any reason to doubt that it should work for your situation. The garage is a double size, and I couldn't say it cools the air to any appreciable amount. There is a bit of noise, and it runs more during the winter so that would be my main concern.
You guys are GOLDEN! I'm HAPPY for ya!
Congratulations on your new power system. Didn’t understand most of the specifics but I can always rewatch it.
Propane cooktops are easier to control your heat and that can make the difference depending on what you’re cooking.
I notice you guys had Linnea visiting, are your properties close to each other and do you guys also have 40 acres? Enjoyed the video!
Looks great, so much cleaner to put all the solar on the roof
GOT POWER - YEY - HAPPY FOR YOU - PROGRESS 🤗 🤗 🤗 👍 👍 👍
Hope you guys are safe from the fires 😮 praying
I have been "off-grid" for over 8 years due to load shedding here in South Africa. Some advice that I can give. Induction - just no, draws too much power even for a short while and if you are going to do most of your cooking at night, say goodbye to battery power. Instapot use only during the day - also draws too much power over the short period of cooking. Slow cooker is wonderful - I prep in the morning and switch on, dinner ready by 5. Propane water heater - YES and couple it to a solar water heater as well - during the day the sun heats the solar heater water and propane kicks in only if the water temp is not right. Use only the clothes dryer during the day. Try to do as much heavy duty "electrical" during the day.
I love that wall. It reminds me of Aboriginal art. So cool!
Heat pump water heaters have the heat pump mounted to the TOP, so there is no extra footprint. They only use around 400-600 watts of power to heat up. You can also put them on a wifi timer so that they turn off in the evening and come on an hour before you wake up so that you have hot water when you need it.
Sun is free and renewable, propane is not.
My offgrid home use electric everything. Induction cooking, air fryer/microwave over, Mini Split for heating and cooling.
I did this so that I am no slave to a gas that I need to pay to refill or have run out. I have a slightly smaller system than you. 10kWh battery, 5kW inverter (120/240 with a 60w parasitic draw), 9 380watt panels (2400 watts)
I have never run out of power, I just make sure that the mini split goes off before bed and we switch on a ceiling fan instead.
We run 24/7 internet, tv, fridge, hot water, cooking, water pump, all electric powered. You can do it. If you want some help choosing things let me know in a reply and we can exchange details.
Remember, Buy Once, Cry Once. Go fully renewable
One last thing. The temp rise of water heaters is ONLY a concern with ON DEMAND. Storage water heaters including heat pump units will heat till hot, so not a concern at all. You can also install is outside if the idea of free cooling indoors is a problem. 😉
Wow, Barron, you went over most of our heads, but I kind of understood. So happy that you guys have the power you need. I would definitely cover your invertor, even though it's rated for outside, i wouldn't want an expensive piece of equipment just sitting out in the elements. Also, maybe think about using both electric and propane where you can, if you are without sun for a while and you don't want to use your generator, the propane appliances are good as back up or when cooking gas is may be better for you meal.
Elsa, I loved the ice cream selections. We have allergies and when we find options we can have we buy usually 10-12. People look at us like crazy but it is so fun for us and feels like we are giving ourselves the best presents ever. No shame in little indulgences.
So exciting 😊
You all are great
Thanks for watching!!
Excellent Video Guys! Off-grid battery voltage is very confusing for many homeowners. Choosing 48V at this time is very safe and cost-effective (think smaller wire size on the DC circuit). One can easily wire the house for AC 120V and be respectively efficient. I went for a 24V system. Not because it is cheap but because we have a "36V DC" standard in use for many years in commercial construction. My house is designed to use 18 to 32V appliances in general, and the computer controlled equipment is 120V 60Hz. Colorado has adopted the NFPA National Electric Code which also encompasses mining equipment (mining standard is DC). In conversation with Colorado lead inspectors, I determined that a mostly DC residence is possible and also efficient. .. if one can purchase the correct wire gage. Any one remember the old school light switch that clicked like a leather whip sounding off in the night? Those were AC/DC rated appliances! There are some trade offs when using all DC or all DC in transformer conversions. I just decided to minimise the total number of DC to AC and then back to DC conversions. Not every transformer is peaked for efficiency one can stack as many as a 40% power derating from solar cell to appliance in an off grid application. Cheers!
Few thoughts on the stoves. If you get induction be very careful with cast iron. They aren’t recommended for induction ovens and even if you do use them it’ll scratch it up. For actual cooking, GAS ALL THE WAY 👏 Not only are you guys used to cooking on gas so switching to induction will be more annoying but there is no better way to cook consistent meals than with gas stoves. :)
This comes from us living with both versions and I would take a cheap gas stove over any induction stove anyyy day!
Long time subscriber, and this has to be my favorite video you two have ever produced! Currently living in a self converted skoolie.
Our electrical system setup:
- 9.6 KWH battery bank (400ah x 24v)
- Just shy of 2KW solar panels (6 x 320W panels)
- 3KW inverter
Very much relate to the amount of research it took to design a well planned system! Weeks of studying, and I felt like I only brushed the surface. We live in the PNW, and we opted for propane instant water heater (one that was meant to go into a full size home), and propane 4 burner range. Our primary heat source is two propane furnaces. Obviously, living where you live changes the considerations you have considerably, however one thing I know is true is that unreliable heating of water gets old fast. If an issue arises in your system that requires you to temporarily stop using your system to troubleshoot and fix it, it would be much easier to use a portable power bank to run a propane water heater off of it to maintain the ability to go about business as usual. I think having an induction stove top may be a great option, because if there are ever issues causing you to not be able to use the stove, you can always whip out a propane camp stove and use that instead. Unsure if I myself would opt for anything other than a propane oven, but I bake a TON, so maybe not as much of a consideration for you two. I know I'm preaching to the choir, but redundancy is key, and whatever you decide, I'd personally prioritize picking the option that intersects reliability and flexibility as evenly as possible. It's not a matter of if things go wrong, it's a matter of when, and once you start living in a home, the difficulty of switching to going back to extremely uncomfortable conditions cannot be understated. I can't speak much to heating your space (as the PNW is a different kind of paradise than the paradise where you two live), but I can say that it is nice to have the option to leave for a period of time and trust your house can be heated and cooled pretty reliably without having to worry about your system being depleted.
You guys rock! I know whatever you two decide will be intentional and well thought out, and I can't wait to see what happens next!
Thank you for this! This is good stuff to learn!
I'd go induction. If you have enough power. Propain is expensive and smells, you always need to check to make sure you have enough. Electricity solar is free. You put the system in might as well uses it! 😊
More features on elsa please.
10 seconds into your latest video and I agree with Baron that is fascinating. It reminds me of when my 6 year old son was picking blueberries and he told me he could really taste the wind, rain and sunshine in one of the berries he ate 🙂
Oh my on the rattle snake!! Elsa has a good eye but I guess you learn that when common. I have a major fear of snakes. We have copperheads here in western Ohio which thankfully I have only seen once but we have some of the biggest rat snakes I have ever seen! When we moved here in 1993 we had one that liked to stretch out along the length of our garage on the black mulch to sun. Never once showed aggression or bothered us so we just let him be. Sometimes we saw him up in a tree. He was freaking huge! He was around for a couple summers. Never a highlight for me but excepted him. Delivery drivers not so much!! 😂
Reaction time has to prompt if bitten, I watched video recently of a man who had to drive himself to hospital and they had to contact another hospital for anti venom. Scarer that not all hospitals are equipped for treatment with the snake bite.
We have a tankless propane hot water heater and love it. We buried a 500 gallon tank and it runs our hot water heater and stove.
Even though I’m technologically challenged, I totally enjoyed watching this. And now I know there’s lithium iron batteries. Love you guys!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Wow. You convinced me to never do my own design or install. B way over my head. So nice to see Linnea come over to share cooking. What a great community with James etc
We went with propane tankless hot water heater in our trailer as well as solar for power. My wife and I went on a seven week road trip last year and boondocked most of it. Y’all inspired the trip and it was awesome
Love the watercolour at the end. 😍😍❤
Very enjoyable. Loved it. Great work success 😊. Hope it makes life a bit more easy and comfortable for you both 👍
Propane burners all the way 1000% satisfaction
Your new home looks amazing. You do good work! Your breakdown on your solar build was awesome. My son did my van solar and he did a great job but I know this will help many.
Amazing ❤
Baron you got it! You just explained what Tesla was trying to tell us, underyling everything is light, in your case sunlight, frequency and vibration. If you realize that, you unlock keys to the universe.
I want you, Elsa and Tesla as neighbors❤
Tucumcari cheese is delicious. I toured their cheese plant years ago. Taking part in the process then buying it was humbling and amazing.
Thank you for using Kwh and Kw as units. Pretty rare for an American channel.
I loved everything about this video… then your special guest that cooked for you, so cool you guys are neighbors!!!
Elsa… you didn’t post the name of the enterprise that made the ice cream!! Would you please post it for us! If not I’ll watch it again and make sure I catch it this time! You all are just lovely human beings!! Thank you for doing you!!
✨🕊️✨💖✨🙏✨
McConnell’s ice cream!
Absolutely fascinating!! Learning something new all the time!!
