This is fascinating. I don't understand everything Barron says, but just bearing witness to troubleshooting, thought experiments, and physical trial and error makes me appreciate how thoughtful y'all have to be in this lifestyle. The problem solving for living off grid is wild.
I like this format, beautiful blend of info and storytelling - great narrative Elsa!

Check with your home insurance company to make sure that they will continue to insure your home with solar on the ROOF. Example in Florida many insurance companies are canceling home owner insurance including hurricane insurance due to hurricane winds that could damage the solar than in turn the solar panels could damage the home roof.

I love that Barron is an integral part of the videos now. He is so intelligent and interesting. I remember Elsa saying many years ago. that Barron felt awkward and didn’t really know what to say in the videos but slowly, and surely over the years, he has got there. I was so pleased when Elsa changed the RUclips channel name to include Barron as that felt a real step forward in the journey together. I was absolutely fascinated about the sunlight when burning the wood. This is something I am definitely going to be looking up and learning more about. Thank you Barron for peaking my interest.

After watching these two for years, moving their solar panels to catch the most rays, being frugal with their energy expenditure, sometimes going without any electricity at all, it is SO immensely gratifying to see them have this incredible solar set up now. Even though this video was very educational, for me, it was more emotional because of the momentous achievement they have accomplished! Congrats to both of you, Barron & Elsa!

Good job. I'm installing a 30Kwatt system now. Just an FYI, you will want to double your solar panel's because of low winter sun yields. Summer gives gobs of power. Everyone should design their solar system based on winter conditions.

      I absolutely disagree!
This is the main problem in solar power you never know how long an deep are the 'winter conditions' your system can be too small ever. Use grid power or generator power if you will be offgrid!
My advice water cooled diesel generator for heating.

If you guys are planning to do any canning a propane stove is probably the best way to go. Induction is not great because the glass can crack. You also need specific cookware for them. Great job on the solar!!

    • @Luvlacegrl

    • @sparsh415
      @sparsh415 Месяц назад +1

Could they not use an induction for general cooking as they have a solar set up and use a gas Camping stove for their Canning???

    • @Barbara-ui7cy
      @Barbara-ui7cy Месяц назад +1

@@sparsh415I agree since they will be using solar for electricity induction would be good for regular use. There are some great camp stoves that would work with propane outside where it doesn’t heat up the house. My stove has an induction cooktop with a convection oven that also has air fry. That’s another small appliance that can be eliminated from the countertop. It also eliminates the need to do such small batches in a regular air fryer.

We have had solar water heating for 16 years - our tubes heat glycol that then transfers the heat into our tank. The glycol works really well because it can still heat if it’s below freezing, but sunny. We have a fan cooled radiator when we’re making too much hot water. I looove my endless hot water in summers. Our big tank does use a single electric element we turn it on when we need to augment during dark dreary days. Hope you’re not in the path of any wild fires. Wishing y’all continued success with your solar system.

What a great video! Thanks for sharing! I'm on year # 12 living full time in a small RV. I do like using the water tank, and love having propane for cooking and heating water. It's nice to have, especially for an emergency heat source. I am still using my now 21 year old Atwood RV 6 gallon water heater. Never fails. I turn it on for about a half hr which gives plenty for 2 quick showers and dishes. Then I turn it off until tomorrow. Propane stoves and ovens are so reliable. Enjoy....You guys are so cool. 😎

The tanks are insulated like a yeti cooler so they hold temp really well without pulling a lot of power. We have ours set up on an off peak program through our electric co-op and we’re never out of hot water.

I have been using a propane stove for 2 years because I live off grid too in a tiny home, I love my propane stove it heats things up so quickly it's very efficient and I don't find it uses a whole lot of propane especially if you're just using the burners and not the oven. I also have a direct vent propane heater as well as a direct vent propane water heater, both I like very much, I don't use much hot water either so it's perfect. I should mention too there's these "containers" that you can get that hook onto the side of your wood stove that heat water and they have a valve on it so you can have hot water all the time for your tea or coffee which is pretty cool 🌅

I definitely think this video will be helpful to others in the future. Especially just giving them confidence to tackle an install on their own.
As far as appliances i would have to recommend a propane stove for primary use. There's just nothing like cooking on fire! You could always have a one or two burner induction stove that is used when you want to take advantage of the solar power.

Modern gas stoves have electrical ignition so you’ll use very, very little propane. The older stoves had a pilot light which used a high amount of propane. I have a small tall cylinder of propane for my Bosch and it lasts me 3.5 years. I used a cylinder every three months with my old stove. Quite a difference.

I don't know if you all will even see this or not but I'll tell ya about anyway. I know how you both want to stay off grid as much as possible but when I saw you hooking up your solar post yesterday it got me to thinking. Barron said you were thinking of propane or electric hot water heaters. Years ago when I was little our electric hot water heater caught on fire and my dad didn't want to risk it happening again so he just took it out, anyways he was some what of an inventor and for winter he built a woodburning hot water heater.he found a water tank with a flume going up the middle of it built a fire box to have a fire in and welded them together and hooked water to it it helps heat the house in the winter and they have hot water. In the summertime they have solar hot water. He took an old side by side refrigerator and put two water tanks that he painted black inside and covered it with a sliding glass door pointed it south and you basically have hot water all summer long. He passed a few years ago but my mom still uses this system to heat water. Sorry the post is so long but I hope it helps.

From an Electrical Engineer, for a DIY project, that solar installation is fine. Like you said, you gave the reasoning for the flat vs angled solar panel etc, and that hopefully, a certified electgrician will come inspect it later etc, etc.
Only thing that I would have recommended (not seeing it, but it may be there. If it is, then ignore), would have been a battery disconnect breaker for each 48V battery bank.

I installed a ASHP Water Heater in February of this year. I only had a 120 VAC outlet nearby so used a Rheem 120 VAC 50 Gal. unit. It's in the garage here in Reno, NV so it was 47 degrees in February, and it used about 4 kWh per day. During the summer months it would be 74 to 80 degrees in the garage and only uses about 2 to 2.5 kWh per day. I keep the water temp at 137 during the day and switch to 130 at night. We are 2 retired people, and it has worked without any issues. Our inlet temp is probably near 70 in summer but much colder in the winter. I don't see any reason to doubt that it should work for your situation. The garage is a double size, and I couldn't say it cools the air to any appreciable amount. There is a bit of noise, and it runs more during the winter so that would be my main concern.

I have been "off-grid" for over 8 years due to load shedding here in South Africa. Some advice that I can give. Induction - just no, draws too much power even for a short while and if you are going to do most of your cooking at night, say goodbye to battery power. Instapot use only during the day - also draws too much power over the short period of cooking. Slow cooker is wonderful - I prep in the morning and switch on, dinner ready by 5. Propane water heater - YES and couple it to a solar water heater as well - during the day the sun heats the solar heater water and propane kicks in only if the water temp is not right. Use only the clothes dryer during the day. Try to do as much heavy duty "electrical" during the day.

Heat pump water heaters have the heat pump mounted to the TOP, so there is no extra footprint. They only use around 400-600 watts of power to heat up. You can also put them on a wifi timer so that they turn off in the evening and come on an hour before you wake up so that you have hot water when you need it.
Sun is free and renewable, propane is not.
My offgrid home use electric everything. Induction cooking, air fryer/microwave over, Mini Split for heating and cooling.
I did this so that I am no slave to a gas that I need to pay to refill or have run out. I have a slightly smaller system than you. 10kWh battery, 5kW inverter (120/240 with a 60w parasitic draw), 9 380watt panels (2400 watts)
I have never run out of power, I just make sure that the mini split goes off before bed and we switch on a ceiling fan instead.
We run 24/7 internet, tv, fridge, hot water, cooking, water pump, all electric powered. You can do it. If you want some help choosing things let me know in a reply and we can exchange details.
Remember, Buy Once, Cry Once. Go fully renewable
One last thing. The temp rise of water heaters is ONLY a concern with ON DEMAND. Storage water heaters including heat pump units will heat till hot, so not a concern at all. You can also install is outside if the idea of free cooling indoors is a problem. 😉

Wow, Barron, you went over most of our heads, but I kind of understood. So happy that you guys have the power you need. I would definitely cover your invertor, even though it's rated for outside, i wouldn't want an expensive piece of equipment just sitting out in the elements. Also, maybe think about using both electric and propane where you can, if you are without sun for a while and you don't want to use your generator, the propane appliances are good as back up or when cooking gas is may be better for you meal.

Elsa, I loved the ice cream selections. We have allergies and when we find options we can have we buy usually 10-12. People look at us like crazy but it is so fun for us and feels like we are giving ourselves the best presents ever. No shame in little indulgences.

Excellent Video Guys! Off-grid battery voltage is very confusing for many homeowners. Choosing 48V at this time is very safe and cost-effective (think smaller wire size on the DC circuit). One can easily wire the house for AC 120V and be respectively efficient. I went for a 24V system. Not because it is cheap but because we have a "36V DC" standard in use for many years in commercial construction. My house is designed to use 18 to 32V appliances in general, and the computer controlled equipment is 120V 60Hz. Colorado has adopted the NFPA National Electric Code which also encompasses mining equipment (mining standard is DC). In conversation with Colorado lead inspectors, I determined that a mostly DC residence is possible and also efficient. .. if one can purchase the correct wire gage. Any one remember the old school light switch that clicked like a leather whip sounding off in the night? Those were AC/DC rated appliances! There are some trade offs when using all DC or all DC in transformer conversions. I just decided to minimise the total number of DC to AC and then back to DC conversions. Not every transformer is peaked for efficiency one can stack as many as a 40% power derating from solar cell to appliance in an off grid application. Cheers!

Few thoughts on the stoves. If you get induction be very careful with cast iron. They aren’t recommended for induction ovens and even if you do use them it’ll scratch it up. For actual cooking, GAS ALL THE WAY 👏 Not only are you guys used to cooking on gas so switching to induction will be more annoying but there is no better way to cook consistent meals than with gas stoves. :)
This comes from us living with both versions and I would take a cheap gas stove over any induction stove anyyy day!

Long time subscriber, and this has to be my favorite video you two have ever produced! Currently living in a self converted skoolie.
    Our electrical system setup:
    - 9.6 KWH battery bank (400ah x 24v)
    - Just shy of 2KW solar panels (6 x 320W panels)
    - 3KW inverter
Very much relate to the amount of research it took to design a well planned system! Weeks of studying, and I felt like I only brushed the surface. We live in the PNW, and we opted for propane instant water heater (one that was meant to go into a full size home), and propane 4 burner range. Our primary heat source is two propane furnaces. Obviously, living where you live changes the considerations you have considerably, however one thing I know is true is that unreliable heating of water gets old fast. If an issue arises in your system that requires you to temporarily stop using your system to troubleshoot and fix it, it would be much easier to use a portable power bank to run a propane water heater off of it to maintain the ability to go about business as usual. I think having an induction stove top may be a great option, because if there are ever issues causing you to not be able to use the stove, you can always whip out a propane camp stove and use that instead. Unsure if I myself would opt for anything other than a propane oven, but I bake a TON, so maybe not as much of a consideration for you two. I know I'm preaching to the choir, but redundancy is key, and whatever you decide, I'd personally prioritize picking the option that intersects reliability and flexibility as evenly as possible. It's not a matter of if things go wrong, it's a matter of when, and once you start living in a home, the difficulty of switching to going back to extremely uncomfortable conditions cannot be understated. I can't speak much to heating your space (as the PNW is a different kind of paradise than the paradise where you two live), but I can say that it is nice to have the option to leave for a period of time and trust your house can be heated and cooled pretty reliably without having to worry about your system being depleted.
You guys rock! I know whatever you two decide will be intentional and well thought out, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

I'd go induction. If you have enough power. Propain is expensive and smells, you always need to check to make sure you have enough. Electricity solar is free. You put the system in might as well uses it! 😊

Oh my on the rattle snake!! Elsa has a good eye but I guess you learn that when common. I have a major fear of snakes. We have copperheads here in western Ohio which thankfully I have only seen once but we have some of the biggest rat snakes I have ever seen! When we moved here in 1993 we had one that liked to stretch out along the length of our garage on the black mulch to sun. Never once showed aggression or bothered us so we just let him be. Sometimes we saw him up in a tree. He was freaking huge! He was around for a couple summers. Never a highlight for me but excepted him. Delivery drivers not so much!! 😂

Reaction time has to prompt if bitten, I watched video recently of a man who had to drive himself to hospital and they had to contact another hospital for anti venom. Scarer that not all hospitals are equipped for treatment with the snake bite.
