In terms of Special Forces starting off the British template that is true, but remember just because you're the originator of something doesn't mean you'll be the best at it. Even SAS themselves often comment on how better equipped the Americans are, and I think that's what gives them edge.

From UK. Punching above their weight is something we tend to use to refer to NZ, Aussie, Canadian and other Commonwealth Armed Forces. WW1 and WW2 we saw how the Commonwealth provided tremendous support from North Africa through India and the Far East. We also had Commonwealth Navies taking over RN Duties across the globe to free up RN vessels for the Falkland Conflict in 1982. In addition we had the Gurkhas who terrified the Argentinians just by reputation. Thank you to Joanna Lumley for pushing to have SOME Correction to the Gurkha pensions BUT Liz Truss can add that to her list. The role of Secretary of State for Defence, I hope, will be Ben Wallace with a much improved Budget for expansion of the Army and Airforce.

I do wonder at times about this phrase "punching above our weight". Although geographically a small nation, the UK has the 5th or 6th largest economy in the world (depending on which test is applied) with an overall economic output around 3 times that of, for example, Russia and a total value of about $1.4 Trillion. The UK is a global "soft" superpower, with huge economic leverage around the world and is at the centre of the global economy, with London and New York tussling over and occasionally swapping the top spot as the global financial centre. I would argue that the UK is militarily punching below its weight. Economically, we have been able to mangle the Russian Economy in concert with the US and the EU, which should give a good indication of the UK's power and influence.
The money spent on the Military is squandered to some extent, although I acknowledge that there is a lot of background investment in future capabilities. However we include spending on Ukraine's firepower and Veteran's pensions in our Defence budget, which to me smacks of "smoke and mirrors". We nominally spend 2.2% of our GDP on Defence. We could spend more, but we are spending far more on the NHS and Social Care. The new PM wants to spend 3%, which would bump our defence spending to something around $80 billion annually.
We used to punch at our weight if you consider our economic power, especially in WW1 and WW2, when our Army and Navy easily matched those of the US (indeed the USN only overtook the RN in sheer numbers of ships late in 1944) but I would argue, in relation to the size of our economic power, we are now punching well below our weight.
We are no minnow, despite the diminutive size of our islands!
Edit... Ex British Army. Patriot. Proud of my nation and its history.

The British armed forces ethos of 1-10 will mean we will always punch above our weight, give a single soldier the training and capability to successfully take on 10 enemies, give every tank, plane, ship the same capacity and it becomes a formidable force enabling a smaller, more effective fighting contingent to carry out the same duties as a much larger opponent for much lower long term costs. This enables funds to be secured as and when required to quickly expand any aspect of the armed forces should the need arise. Its no good having the largest forces on the planet if they are not regularly used, only to be used as and when, this leads to defunct equipment being forced into action sometimes decades after production, only to fail to more modern equipment which Russia is now learning to its own detriment.

I don’t think in Britain we have as much patriotism as in the USA. Many of us are patriotic I include myself in that but the difference for me is that immigrants (even second or third generation) to the country in the UK tend to see themselves as the country they originated from first before seeing themselves as British. In the US it appears (this is just from what I see and five or so visits to the country) people adopt being from the US and standing up for the National anthem etc more readily. Possibly this is a reflection of the USA and it’s place in the world and maybe the British find ourselves humbled in our smaller place in the world than we once had.

I did see a little contention when they announced even more cuts in favour of upgrading equipment and modernising the military. But nobody was overly happy about reducing military personnel.
But hey. What I saw and what happened around the country are probably different things. It's just surprising that's all.

Before I start I would like to point out this is opinion only, I am interested in the military but I think there needs to be a bit of honesty. As the recent COGS stated “And though I bow to no one in my advocacy for the need for game changing digital transformation, to put it bluntly, you can’t cyber your way across a river. No single platform, capability, or tactic will unlock the problem.”
We are relying too much on the new technology, which causes a gap in capabilities. The defence review tends to cause more harm to the armed forces than anything else. The army personnel is being reduced (it will be reduced to 70k troops) regiments are being amalgamated, losing history (but somehow they have enough people to form a Ranger Regiment) ,cut down on the equipment they receive. The Royal Navy seems to be getting bigger but still more ships need to be built, with a focus on RFA ships because we will have a gap in that capability when the last refuling ship retires & more multipurpose ships. The RAF is in the news for negative things at the minute; notably the Red Arrows, and recruitment requirements. Furthermore the MOD spends money on things such as the new Boxer vehicles which have not come into fruitition.

Considering that we had the largest empire in the world despite the fact that it all started from a small island of the coast of Europe is just incredible, considering that the British whilst weren’t saints and were brutal was one of the more economically driven country in the world where yes empires like the Spanish or Portuguese were in for the money as well as the French and everyone else, however for the British it’s odd considering that we didn’t fight for our empire so to speak, we simply bought the place, and those that we couldn’t steal we simply got given for free from one of the other empires and because we invested more in navigation and seamanship more so over the other country’s all the while avoiding most of the fighting in Europe due to the English Channel allowing us to have a strong and healthy competitive environment unlike the chines, who became so powerful that they mostly spent their time dealing with pirates or the occasional Mongolian shopping trip but mostly suffered from a cultural point where different beliefs and ideologies along with too much free time lead to constant collapse followed by constant rebuilding. Vs the uk in which not everything was smooth sailing😅, but we just didn’t have to deal with the threat of invasion by say the Germans or the French and when they did try to invade, England was such a horrible country to be in where in rains 24/7, the locals are a bunch of madmen and football hooligans, it’s no wonder everyone packed up their backs and simply left, outside of the Scott’s, the Irish and the welsh we didn’t have much in the ways of actual threats to our country, the English Channel is one of the most violent stretches of water in the world outside of the Atlantic or pacific during a storm but again outside of the Atlantic the English Channel isn’t very pleasant to sail across, and so with a lot of free time, lack of any actual invasions as well as a lot of competition the British were more or less able to advance far in advance of most of the other countries as to our further success was due to a new form of government DEMOCRACY in which power and ideology’s can be created, improved or even removed via a public a vote and whilst some other countries had similar systems they usually fell into anarchy or disarray or full blown rebellion or the tanker over by another country, and so England was not only safe and secured with more investments into its navy than anyone else outside of the Chinese, Britain was also politically stable in which as I said before, power and ideas can be created, improved or removed which is why things like slavery was banned, since whilst it was a profitable thing it was morally abhorrent 😂 which is ironic considering the British track record so far😂, but unlike other countries like france or German or most of the world which had singular rulers be it a king, emperor or the like and whilst Rome was the first democracy it fell due to political infighting as well as constant over land attacks by barbarians and other land locked empires which can simply March over a million soldiers on foot right into Rome, vs England in which case they’d have to take a boat or swim for it, and so trying to get a million soldiers into a boat, perform an amphibious assault all the while having enough food and equipment to support four time the number of soldiers ie extra sandals, swords, arrows, siege equipment ect ect, shove them onto a boat and cross a hazardous bit of water which could result in the los of a dozen or more ships which also means the loss of all those troops on board and their equipment, all the while trying to establish a beachhead as well as constantly streaming in new supplies and resources is extremely difficult and dangerous, especially back then all the while having to fend off again the local defenses in which case even more ships get destroyed and more soldiers for the invasion lost, it wasn’t viable to invade England until things like aero planes, balloons and more advanced ships and weapons were invented which resulted in the Normandy landings

Technically speaking, your title about the British empire's return is somewhat misleading.
The British are a nuclear power and do have a very modern (or getting there) armed forces, with global reach, but they are too small to say that the empire comes back.
Also, there are many technical problems with the efforts to modernize the British forces. Some examples being the Ajax CFV, the propulsion of the Type 45 destroyers, that was problematic in warm climates and of course the latest one with their second aircraft carrier:
    ruclips.net/video/gaPA2jdNCuk/видео.html
Of course these set backs do not mean that the British forces are not good or have inferior equipment. On the contrary they have some of the best trained forces and the best equipment in the world but not in sufficient numbers to justify your title about the Empire coming back. In fact the "Empire never actually left, just got modernized in a 21st century sense. because there is still the British Commonwealth. Although this does not constitute an empire in the pre-WW2 period, it still gives to Great Britain a cultural and trade foothold to most of it's former colonies. It will also be interesting to see how things will turn out, when the 99 years that the British bases around the world were given to the US in exchange for the lend lease program supporting Great Britain in WW2, expire.

In a nice bit of symmetry Shorts offered a fourth jet option the Sperrin and in WWII built the Stirling. To be honest the Valiant was insurance and built a little earlier using assured technology in case the other two cutting edge birds failed. Defence cuts, and wtf can you a todo with a max of 140 tanks given that only a third will ever be in the field at one time,,, American armed forces has already stated we’re not even second tier now…

The HMS Queen Elizabeth battlegroup was sent to the south china sea making it clear that China can't claim international trade routes as their own.... during the voyage the battlegroup located and harassed two Chinese submarines trying to shadow the battlegroup..... and,a RN nuclear submarine on location in front of the battlegroup located a third submarine trying to wait in a kind of ambush attempt...... the Chinese military has grown like wildfire but they have no experience in real life combat since WW2,( Korea and Vietnam behind the scenes excepted).
Don't forget it's not the size of the dog in the fight it's the fight in the dog

The British meets the dictionary definition of a superpower.
However they do not consider themselves to be a superpower... Strange 😂

Not really strange. The British have always been a martial nation but never a militaristic one such as Russia or China and other totalitsrian countries.

What is the dictionary definition? Pretty sure we just rank as a "major power", rather than superpower.

Brittain is not a superpower. Compared to the US our forces are tiny. UK nuclear weapons allow the UK to punch above it's weight though

@@crowbar9566 Sometimes Britain and France are put into their own the Global power category due to their ability to project power pretty much anywhere in the world something that other major's like Russia can't.

A warship should not have wait weeks to get into drydock poor old Prince of Wales, Elizabeth and Richmond are needed in the Baltic ,in seconds the Russian situation could go ballistic and our best working ships are in the U S

One small comment: unlike the US Navy where a ship is called The United States ship X, in the Royal Navy and RCN etc the name is just HMS or HMCS because it’s just stupid to say “The Her Majesty’s Ship X” ! So, no it’s not The HMS, just HMS. It is ok though to say “The Queen Elizabeth”.
