I always loved this episode, it's one of my faves from Matt Smith's run. My main issue with it is the monster reveal, and leaving it invisible or more of an idea rather than a physical being, would have improved it. Aside from that, Tony Curran absolutely steals the show, especially at the end when Amy and the Doctor show him his museum. Makes me tear up every time. Great episode!

The thing with a show like is how it introduces younger viewers to a major historical person, but in an interesting and fun way. It dealt with mental illness, grief and joy beautifully. At no time being preachy or talking down to the audience. Tony Current was fantastic. A cameo by Bill Nighy too, a world class actor. What a difference to what the show has become now. I can't believe you didn't mention the real star of the episode tho in Murray's own score though. "With love Vincent" is undoubtedly one of, if not my absolute favourite piece of music in the show and is just the most perfect fit for the episode. God I miss Murray Gold.

Harry has certainly matured since his olden days. To be fair, I was like that when I first saw this episode back in 2010. But I definitely appreciate it nowadays; guess I'm more in touch with my emotional/storytelling appreciative side over the past couple of years. I love how Harry was criticizing his younger self at moments in this review. 🤣 I must admit I do prefer the pop song they chose for Vincent's Paris Visit over the godawful "Rise Up" Track that they play for way too long in Series 11's Rosa episode. Gah.
Keep up the great work, Harry.

  • @idcgaming518

I'm glad you were able to revisit your past videos and be willing to change your opinion mate. This episode was always a favourite of mine, as I have been through depression and I know many of my friends have. This is relevant, as the writer for this episode, Richard Curtis, was using his memory of his late sister, who committed suicide, to do exactly what Bill Nighy claimed vincent did - turn his pain and depression into ecstatic beauty. I accept that not everyone agrees with this episode, and that's fine. But personally, this episode feels like it speaks to me, and helps me understand the pain I've been through and most importantly, helps me to move on. Just like how "heaven sent" helped me to understand my grief for both my step-aunt and my grandfather (both of whom died withing 2 months of eachother) and move on, at least a little. That's why these two episodes will always get a 9/10 from me. They are by no means perfect, but they more than achieved what the writers wanted to. I'm sorry for ranting, but I just wanted to share my opinion on this topic.

I agree with your self-assesement of having developed a lot and watching the show nowadays from a more generous and open perspective. I never thought, you weren't a fan and had respected you for that and for your editing that was miles above everyone in the Doctor Who community 4 years ago. But I clocked you as a person who somewhat wanted to hate the show. But now, you seem to take proper care in seeing all there is to see. There's no better reviews for for example season 11 out there than yours. I've recently rewatched your and other reviews of Kerblam, and none but yours managed to hit home every single big issue of the episode.
Currently aside from you, I think DAVIS does a magnificent job at making entertaining fast paced videos. He incorporates Big Finish, and just does what he loves to do, I probably don't watch 80% of his videos but the videos I do watch are labours of love. He's also very clever and mature about the show and his tastes most closely allign with mine, where great character work and emotion can excuse any plot holes and magical conveniences.
Secondly, I also like to shout out Stubagful. I appreciate his incredible ability to get and relay the gist and themes of any story he's confronted with. He manages to ignore the nonsense and talks about the stories on a more abstract level. His visualizations are also incredibly charming and I think he's solely responsible for the massively above-average use of the word "adore" in the Doctor Who community.

I for one don't think your previous review was rotten. If its your honest feeling i cant call it rotten. It was however exactly the kind of criticism i dislike where it felt like you went in wanting to hate the piece and only looked for things to pick on and not for things to enjoy. I think the best critics go in to a piece wanting to enjoy it and having positivity in it. I can understand that it can be hard to muster that up sometimes but going into a review with a good attitude and positivity can make the experience enjoyable even if the film or television show has flaws. I guess what mean is the content was not rotten but the attitude was a little bit. I'm glad you went back and gave it a better, fairer shot. That does show a lot of growth.

I quite like Vincent and The Doctor, it's one of my favorite episodes of 11ths run. Maybe it's because I saw it when I was new to Doctor Who? Maybe it's because I have always enjoyed Van Gogh's art? Maybe I'm in love with Karen Gillan? Who knows. But nevertheless, I give it a 9/10 for all the feels.

I was kind of hating series 5 so far until this episode. This was the very first episode of New Who that managed to make me cry.
Didn't cry with Doomsday or Journey's End (that one had me close though) but Vincent and the Doctor did it. My problem with this episode is that I was moved because I empathised with Vincent, an episodic character, but I couldn't connect with any of the main characters. I still didn't care about Amy or Rory, or their relationship with the Doctor the way I did with Doctors 9 and 10 companions.
So, I think Vincent and the Doctor was a great episode, but Series 5 as a whole, wasn't very good.

Then would it interest you to know that several years before this episode came out, in 2006, Van Gogh and the art specialist had previously worked together in the movie Underworld: Evolution? Tony Curran (Van Gogh) played Markus, the first vampire, and the art specialist (Bill Nighy) played Viktor, a vampire elder that took over leadership of the coven when it was decided that Markus wasn't reliable anymore. 🖤

@@chrispy3369 It is, and granted I really only said it because UE came out the same year Bill Nighy first appeared as Davy Jones, but since I watched Underworld before I watched Doctor Who, I was so surprised when I saw them in this episode together. And technically Bill is only in the opening prologue scene of UE since the rest of the movie is centered more so on Markus's release but still, I always find it to be a fun little connection whenever I re-visit the end scene of Vincent hugging the specialist in particular. 😆

And I was about to say to watch its predecessor, Underworld (2003) first, but then I remembered that Selene (Kate Beckinsale) does a mini re-telling of the first film shortly after the prologue so if you're not interesting in going in order then I think you'll be fine. 😆
