  • The tour will begin at the Isola Tiberina, then Ponte Garibaldi which connects Trastevere to the Centro Storico. From the bridge you can get a sense of where Trastevere is located (on the west bank of the Tiber and south of Vatican City). I will give a brief introduction about the history and geography of the neighborhood. Next we will experience the quieter side of Trastevere: we will walk through the alleys and streets of the residential part of the neighborhood (Vicolo della Luce, Via Della Lungaretta, Piazza del Drago, Via della Luce, Via dei Salumi, Vicolo dell’Atleta) and stop in peaceful Piazza Santa Cecilia which includes a lovely cloister in front of the Chiesa di Santa Cecilia. Along the way we will see medieval buildings (including one built on top of the first synagogue in Rome) and the brass cobblestones that mark the places where individual Holocaust victims lived before being taken to the concentration camps. In Via della Luce I will stop in the Biscottificio Innocenti and ask Stefania (the owner) to show her traditional cookies. We will then head over to the more touristy side of the neighborhood and stop in Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, the heart of the neighborhood, and see the exterior of the Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere.
