David is SO good it is almost ridiculous. His right hand is absolutely incredible. He is so fluid and rhythmic. He has occupied the Solo Guitar territory with no sign of ever letting it go. He's going to go down in the history books as one of the true great acoustic guitarists, setting the bar so high for younger generations to come.
I had to laugh out loud a few times during the songs because David played something so absurdly wonderful that us mortals would never even imagine :) Always a treat to see and hear him play, and always an inspiration to get after some new ideas on the guitar.
Excellent interview! David has such a warm, laid back, down home personality. He can play his brains out but yet remains humble. That is a true musician! Black Mountain Rag was the best I ever heard! Great job Jason and Fretboard Journal...more please?!
Wow I remember the first time I seen David Grier in the eighties he was playing in the hallway at a Hotel in St Louis MO. He was playing his guitar just jamming away I couldn’t believe my eyes or ears. Then came along Bull Harmon and he says hey David what’s up then starts jamming with him. What a treat I will never forget it.
This guy is absolutely AMAZING !!!!!! Only one thing, it was sponsored by Martin Guitar ?? I thought he would be playing the D 18 or D 28?? Ha Ha ha !!! He could play an old cheap guitar and make it sound priceless !
One of my favourite guitar players. The songs he plays here are all excellent imo. One though in particular is astonishing; watch his right hand during Black Mountain Rag. Begins at the 59:01 mark. Got a chance to meet him in London a month or so back, before his gig with Helen Highwater. Nice Guy and great show.
His Picking technique is Brilliant , i will learn this because it makes your right hand so Flexable . Thanks for this Video ! David Grier is Phenomenal !
If you haven't seen this, go to the 25:00 minute mark and listen to Red Haired Boy - a masterpiece of 4 and a half minutes of flatpicking, almost all crosspicked.
I'm watching this for the 2nd or 3rd time and at night I'm practicing with a metronome and trying all the variations David went through on his cross picking journey. The key, as David points out, is being careful not to emphasize any one string so that when it comes time you can emphasize the ones you choose to emphasize. Being gentle on every string is what I think gives David that silky smooth sound that melts in your ears, yeah, like butter.
Playing at Steve Martin's Wedding & Martin Mull (Fernwood Tonight) asking David to play such a fantastic piece! That just blows both sides of my brain! Some Night that must have been! Do the "Wedding Planner People" know about this? And to Top it Off, Black Mt. Rag in I don't know how many keys changes. That's what to do with your 20 mins Before Work Brother. Take a song you know, but don't play and play it in 5 or 6 different keys. Sierra does the same with Wildwood Flower and you see Her using some of the same Left-Hand figures as David. Amazing!
I think the reason he is comfortable with a higher action is he has really thick finger for a guitar player.a light touch is most likely not his style.
It could be fixed, just needs to try another luthier or two. Put it back to where it was I suppose. Doesn't seem like the kinda guy to try that I guess.

I always figured learning the Munsters theme was worth something.
What a nice decent guy David is. Thank you.
John Lynch hahaha! If you only knew. He is the sourest curmudgeon ever! I know him well. Love him a ton, but wow.

That "European somewhere" song that David learned from those Finnish gals is beautiful!
Awesome stuff!
Sweet garnet reverb unit in the background!
He makes it look so easy...
Munsters note is D# not D at the ending change

killer player. amazing!
Quiet your job and go practice…
Haha love it
man's a mad scientist with that red haired boy...wow

Thanks for posting this! Is there any chance for an interview with John Butler?
badass!
What is the guitar model?
Which model Elliot capo does he use?
14.48 ..... someone please tell me what it is!
Theme to the Munsters tv show.

-something like that...
- sounded pretty good!
- yeah it's okay...
That sounded very okay to me. Like, what could more okay? lol!
❤❤❤❤🎉
What is that guitar hanging in the back ? looks like it got two tele pick ups
I think those are the lipstick pickups you'd see on a Danelectro...
Kay Thin Twin (aka the Jimmy Reed model).
Ah... Great looking instrument!
Red haired boy never sounded so good! I love it.
25:20
25:38 better
B E L L O ! !
who is better ?? he is a god player !!
How miserable in life do you have to be to give this a thumbs down?
Miserable or can't hear it thunder.. lol
Come for the guitar, stay for the jokes. “In the 60s and 70s there wasn’t much use for a banjo outside of bluegrass…. It was nice back then.”.
He could probably lift up the front end of a car with that upstroke !
"Fantastic" . . . . . ya think ? ? My first thought was "what kind of tuning is he using?" before I said $hit ! ! Standard tuning ? ? WTH ! ! !
I could listen to nothing but david playing fiddle tunes for the rest of my life and be very satisfied
aaagh, that story of the D18 getting ruined freakin HURTS to hear
It could be fixed, just needs to try another luthier or two. Put it back to where it was I suppose. Doesn't seem like the kinda guy to try that I guess.
Martin Mull is himself a good player.
hes weird but a genius player with that plec
An elite musician who’s a little weird? Must be a first 😂
David is an unreal guitarist, but I've heard red haired boy and that wasn't it...lol
