As a veteran I think it’s important for people to be able to express simultaneously being a patriot and against going to war. Those get confused too often
as the son of a dunkirk veteran, i can say with all honesty my old man was violently against the iraq war, he would tell me "did i miss something, did the world forget what happened with germany, or is war a legal requirement nowadays"
Gorillaz are something else.. I worked on an installation of Jamie Hewitt and the Gorrilaz' work at a museum in London a few years back.. so, innovative..Damon Albarn is such a great composer.. BTW Jamie Hewitt is the animator..
The Clint Eastwood/Dirty Harry connection comes through the reference to the composer Ennio Morricone that you hear in the melodica riff in the song Clint Eastwood. Morricone wrote the music for a lot of the spaghetti westerns, like "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." Damon Albarn loves his music and even wrote a Blur song called "Morricone." The line from Clint Eastwood, "I got sunshine, in a bag" is a line from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. So the tradition continued in naming this song after a Clint character. BTW, one of Damon's other bands is called The Good, the Bad, and the Queen. :). Really wonderful to see you discovering this amazing band
i think the dancing part just means, likening it to innocence "remember when all i did was dance" like something playful and youthful they did before war and adulthood changed everything
I would google the order of watching all of their videos(it's easy to find) as the animation grows the band over the years and tells their story. The entire concept of Gorrilaz (Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett) is that they're a real band, just living in the virtual space(2-D, Murdoc, Russel, and Noodles). The characters from today's videos look nothing like those from 2001. You should also check out any live version(preferably Manchester) of Dirty Harry from The Demon Days Tour, it's so fantastic live!!
Such an interesting rabbit hole, I adore Gorillaz, Very few reactors react to more than a song or two, but there are 7 albums in 20 years of catalog and artwork to dive into, too many good tracks to list, Saturnz Barz, Momentary Bliss, A1M1, Punk, El Manana, Rhinestone Eyes, omg I could go all day🦄
Title-wise at least, this song is something of a follow up to "Clint Eastwood" off their first album. The guy rapping is Bootie Brown from The Pharcyde. For earlier work from Damon Albarn check out Blur "Song 2".
Love this one! Stylo is a great suggestion that others will undoubtedly throw out there, but for something completely different check out "FIre coming out of the monkeys head" kind of a spoken word type track with great music behind it. So creative!
The Gorillaz are really just 2 main people and a bunch of extras and features.. Jamie Hewlett is the animator and Damon Albarn is the songwriter/lead singer.. as far as instruments goes the people playing depends on the album/tour and changes all the time.. most of their songs feature outside artists as well.. this whole band is a radical virtual band idea concocted to be a giant middle finger to the music industry standards. The featured artists on this track are The San Fernandez Youth Chorus and Bootie Brown.
Never listened much to the Gorillaz, but as soon as 2-D starts playing the keyboard I thought to myself "that sounds oddly familiar". The intro sounds close to the intro to The Doors song "Break on through". thought that was cool.
The war is over so say the speaker with the flight suit on, was George Bush saying mission accomplished after first operation of war in Iraq. "All i wanna do is dance." Is what we want over endless war
The Gorillaz are definitely what I would refer to as one of those "Rabbit Hole" bands, well worth the deep dive. Their music videos from each album are like an ongoing story! This one is from "Demon Days" and is also known as "Phase 2"! There's an order that all the videos go in that put together all tell a great story! The singles from Demon Days besides this were Feel Good Inc. and El Manana which is actually a pretty sad video but that is also due to me being particularity liking the little guitar playing girl in the band, like if I had to pick a favorite, she'd be the one
In my opinion, this imagery is showing kids signing up and ready to fight in the desert. In the context of the early 00's this is very prevalent. I joined the military in 2009, after being traumatized by 9/11 in 2001. I remember hating the world. Kids too young don't know about the palpable war fervor that was going on for a solid decade (at least) among the people, particularly young men. I ignored this sentiment back in the day, and I joined up thinking that I was fighting for a just cause and to protect my fellow Americans, who I loved. I lost a lot of friends, literally and figuratively, and we were all changed forever.
You guys should listen to more Gorrilaz. I'm loving seeing vibing to it. Maybe you could try Clint Eastwood Phi Life Cypher Version, and some of the new stuff like Momentary Bliss
He just wants to go back to when he could dance, live without remembering what we have seen. Bush was wearing a flight suit on a Aircraft carrier when he stated the Iraq war was over, 20 years before we pulled troops out.
The lizard dance is so accurate too 😂 my boy be doing that shit all the time when i take him out of his tank (golden bearded dragon btw, its not the same one in the video but their both desert swelling lizards)
You haven't played the vid to the very end and hence missed that rescue truck eventually broke :D About meaning of dance - maybe they express how defenseless, peaceful they are and unfamiliar with whole concept of war and it's alleged higher meaning or necessity. Just my guess, dunno.
The Iraq war was going on when this was a hit. He's talking about George W. Bush. "The war is over, so said the speaker.. with his flight suit on. Maybe to him I'm just a pawn.. so he can advance.." Bush landed on a carrier all dressed up in a flight suit (the ship was in San Diego) with "mission accomplished" in the background on a huge banner.. But the war wasn't really over and got even bloodier after this publicity stunt. And the "all I wanna do is dance" Is like like the soldiers are just "kids with guns" (super young) and they miss being "carefree" (all I want to do is dance). It's kinda like "loss innocence".
As a veteran I think it’s important for people to be able to express simultaneously being a patriot and against going to war. Those get confused too often

@@bigfrankfraser1391 war n drugs...always been good for business, and to stimulate the economy.
@@drew65sep as someone who has experienced both, i can honestly say neither is worth a damn
It's also OK for people to be against war and not be patriotic, because their nation wages war against them too

Another great Gorillaz track is "Stylo", off their plastic beach album. I think you guys would definitely enjoy it.

You really can't classify Gorillaz, such a diverse sound, but always with something to say, not just rapping about self, money, and fame.
i think the dancing part just means, likening it to innocence "remember when all i did was dance" like something playful and youthful they did before war and adulthood changed everything

Gorillaz "Stylo" 🙌 (great video)
One of my favorite songs by them. Check out Starunz Barz and Superfast Jellyfish. Love this group.
This is one of my favorite Gorillaz songs

Hey love your reactions and your thoughts about the music are excellent and articulated in a very mature manner, unlike some other reactors. 👍👍👍

I remember when I was growing up in the early 2000s and this song played on the radio all of the time in the UK you would almost got sick of it ha ha.
The beat drop ughhhhh so good
Haha. I love this song. Check out Demon Days live from Manchester version of this. It will make you grin ear to ear.
STYLO! Featuring Bobby Womack and Mos Def. Get it!
FEEL GOOD INC 🙏🏻🔥
You gotta watch the live version. So good!
They have different guest artists on all their songs. When you read the title of each song you can see the different singers and rappers appearing
I love ya’ll reactions you take it so serious and you listen! Honestly my fave reaction couple 💞
One of the best reaction channels out there, love you guys reaction to all tracks. Big ups from across the seas!
Lil' fact about the song and music video is it was inspired by a war in which the only survivors were children.
Which war? I want to learn more about it
@@iamsad9107It is more referencing the war in Iraq when bush was president.

Please react to the older Gorillaz stuff. Lots of good songs on their first 3 albums.

You should check out desole from the gorillaz. Great animation and the guest is from Mali and she kills it

You should check out the live performance of this from the Brit awards
The best part about that lizard shot of it "dancing" is that theres a species that really does that so their feet don't get too hot lmao
"Dirty Harry"? - "I need a gun; to keep myself from harm." As well as a follow on from "Clint Eastwood" and "Kids With Guns".
*"I need a gun to keep myself among"
To keep myself AMONG. If you have watched Bananaz, Damon has quite the discussion about this lyric with a choir director
