    For anyone reading this: I know that dog training can be difficult sometimes, but you're doing great. Keep up the good work, and your dog (and your own sanity) will thank you for it! ❤️💕

    Really helpful, sensible & useful advice for a first time dog owner

    All of this is great, but the number 1 thing that is important is the Dog Owner needs to have the "desire" and "want" to make the Dog a well behaved dog. Its A LOT of work and it takes dedication. Myself as an example, I didn't want a dog, but my wife did, so she got a dog without asking me. So here I am 50+ yrs old never owned a dog before and guess what she brings home? A female Doberman. We did as stated the "Obedience" training but with inflation, we just didn't have the extra resources to be spending as much as we were on said training and did not yield the results that I would have liked. Now don't get me wrong, I like dogs, but I do not see myself as a "Dog Person". I keep bringing that up because its VERY difficult to get motivated to do something with a dog that you don't really want. Do I love the dog? Yes of course. I do my best, but my heart just isn't in it and it shows when the dog (Ruby) is around other dogs and people. So for those people out there, that just want to spring a dog onto someone in the hopes that all will work out? Well, that isn't really fair is it? Dogs are a commitment and take a lot of work. Make this type of decision TOGETHER so the FAMILY is in unison in the understanding that its a TEAM effort. In my case, I spend the most time with Ruby, I do the best I can, but Ruby is not the best canine companion and that has NOTHING to do with Ruby's capabilities, but those of myself and the desire to do it. I know this sounds like a negative way to look at things, and I realize most that visit this channel are all dog lovers, I am just commenting from the point of view of a person that would prefer not to have one. I compromised because I Love my Wife. That's why we have a dog. I would love some help, but I can't afford the expense of doing so, especially now a days. This is why I am here watching these videos. Anyway, just some thoughts from a different perspective. Thanks for reading👍

      You say you have a dog because your wife brought one home because she wanted a dog, yet on a recent video ("I'm a bad dog trainer") you commented stating it's because your daughter gifted you it from an abusive place. I'm not sure why there's two different stories but I would hope it's not just to place the blame on other people. Obedience takes time for dogs that have a history, be patient and follow similar videos and you'll get there with it.

      @@andrewbyford Wow have never had anyone vet me on RUclips before, kinda scary actually. Yes, my daughter gifted me a dog that I didn't want and my wife was the one who wanted to keep it. So both stories are true just used in different context. So please don't assume things as this has been a very trying experience not only for myself but the Dog as well. If I am being honest, if it was up to me? I would not have kept the dog from day 1. Over the past year I have grown fond of "Ruby" but it is my Wife that talked me into keeping the Gift from my Daughter. In the end, I feel I did the right thing.

    • @andrewbyford
      @andrewbyford Месяц назад

      @eppyz You definitely did the right thing, and you've clearly developed a bond with your dog even though you aren't a fan of them in general. Your comment just stood out on both videos as the top comment, I normally read the first few comments and I'm also naturally inquisitive, hence my original comment, you quite often see trolls making stuff up for attention and I enjoy calling them out, so I'm glad you're genuinely being honest.

    This video is so valuable and insightful. I always knew there was more to having a well-behaved dog than simply just “obedience” but could never quite put it into words. This shows that simply taking your dog to training classes for a limited time isn’t everything. Behaviour is something you have to work on day in, day out for the whole of your dog’s life .Obedience, manners and socialisation - the golden trio. Beautifully explained.

    Another headline today. A child attacked by 6XL bully’s. A man living in a camper van with his dogs. They’d already attacked a man with his Dalmatian/ The police didn’t do anything. So this child is almost torn to pieces. And there seems to be more people being attacked and fatally here in the U.K. Here is my question. Hypothetically if we as members of the public are suddenly set upon by one of these dogs, what is the best way to either stop the dog, or physically protect ourselves? Do these dogs have soft spots to hit, we certainly can’t outrun them. What can we do?

    Hey Will, your guidance has done me the world of good with my puppy, he's 17 weeks old (I've had him 7 weeks) and already he has the 5 rules down to a tee and every walk is a joy! Nice loose lead, recall is there but in progress with distractions involved, he even goes to the toilet when I tell him to! The only thing is the first 100 yards of the walk its like he dosnt want to know, he often stops, sits down or just refuses to move untill I bribe him with a treat. It's strange because it's like he dosnt want to go on the walk at first but then he's amazing after say 2-5 mins... me and my dog live in our camper van so maybe it's the fact he dosnt want to leave he's home I'm not sure. Anyway keep the vids coming, and keep doing what you do because you really are the best at it!!! Thank you!!!

    For the sit, stay, break exercise, I don't tell the dog to sit. Just stand there and the dog will eventually sit on their own. At that point you give them what they were wanting from you. In their mind, they are training you. This is from "Don't Shoot the Dog" book.
