  • I feel like in the zero waste world there are people on insta/pintrest/the internet in general presenting this life style as if it’s always pretty and perfect. But it’s not. Zero waste is not about looking a certain way. It’s not about having only a quart size mason jar that contains a year's worth of trash. That is not an accurate depiction of low waste living. …definitely not in my life. So this video is to serve as an honest look at how messy and ugly living sustainably can be. And the reason I’m doing videos like this, is to help drop the guilt or frustration that some of us might feel when we don’t meet those unrealistic standards. “We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.” - Ann Marie Bonneau

    Sadly, where I live we can not recycle plastic, glass, metal or textiles!! 😭 I thrift/buy second hand, compost, repurpose or reuse anything I can and try NOT to buy packaged products at the grocery store. It is so FRUSTRATING!! After 40 years of reduce, reuse, recycle, there are still SO FEW options!

      Hello @ritalyn b! That’s a bummer that the recycling system is so limited. I agree there should be more options. It can be VERY frustrating, but don’t let it get you down. You’re doing the best you can and that’s wonderful! Keep up the great work! Thanks so much for sharing!

      Each of us can only do so much and we are often limited by our infrastructure (ie community based recycling opportunities). You are doing your part. As piddley as it sounds, towards over-all sustainability and eco-friendliness picking up pieces of litter goes a long way. A lot of litter, even in-land litter, ends up in waterways which is then transported by water until it breaks up, ends up injuring wildlife, or gathers at a chokepoint. It is a bit like the sand dollar parable in that there are far more sand dollars dying on the beach than can be saved by putting them back into the ocean by one person. But, being put back in the ocean is very valuable to those who are put back. - Every piece of litter picked up is one which won't end up in a waterway, won't have the potential to injure wildlife, and won't end up at a chokepoint. In most communities, there is plenty of litter to chose from and you don't have to concentrate on the disgusting types.

    Oh I loved this video. I try to reuse, recycle, rethink, repair and compost as much as possible. I try to reuse the bags food come in. Often they are sturdy and sometimes even have a zip thingy. I label them clearly and get another few uses out of them. Haven't bought freezer bags in ages. I truly enjoy your videos, thank you. 😊

      I order them from Etsy. If you search for “soap scraps”, “odd sized soap,” or something like that, you should get results of sellers that need to get rid of their scraps. 👍

      I used to work in a soap factory. Pharmaceutical, actually, that made soaps and creams for acne, and luxury soaps as well. Scraps usually got recycled into new batches but sometimes bars would make it through production that were damaged in some way. These were left in a box near the time clock for the employees to take home.

    Corporations also have a term called "complete use" which pre-dates the zero waste movement. Under complete use, the concept is to squeeze every piece and part of the materials being used into a production product; this generates less waste which in turn can be cost accounted into manufacturing cost savings. Ex) One company used to cut parts from full sheets of material. Big parts cut from full sheets with scrap being generated and multiple small parts grouped by final use criteria from individual sheets of material with scrap being generated. When the cost of the sheets of material went up, they found ways to cut small parts from scrap being generated when cutting big parts. They also changed how they cut thier multiple small parts so as to maximize the use of the material rather then grouped by final use.
    Then, as transportation and disposal costs rose, "complete use" expanded to include ways to use the scrap and waste produced. In some cases, this meant branching out into an additional product line, selling the waste for use by others, or simply finding a way to give thier waste away for use by others.
    Corporate zero waste came out of the complete use era.

    I haven't used paper towels in about 2 years but i don't think it would've been possible if I stopped eating takeout. i use the napkins from takeout food for any disposable paper towel job, keep the utensils for guests or crafts, and use the paper bags for trash in the car. I've even used the aluminum lips from chipotle as baking trays a few times lol

    I love this. I wish it was easier for me, but in my country, exactly in the city I live in, recycling is not a thing, also I still live with my parents so we create a lot of waste and it's really hard not to.

    • @BeccaDoesStuffYT
      @BeccaDoesStuffYT  2 года назад +3

      Hello and thanks so much for watching! It’s wild how many cities around the world don’t have recycling systems! But regardless, creating no waste is impossible for anyone living in modern society. We all create waste. It’s just that some places are lucky to have more package-free options, recycling facilities, etc. And physical trash is not the only aspect of sustainable living. Some people may not be able to avoid creating trash, but they car pool when they can. Some vote for the changes they want to see. Some just simply avoid littering. And others turn lights off when they leave the room. There’s no perfection here. 😉

    • @terryhenderson424
      @terryhenderson424 2 года назад +2

      While you are still engulfed in the economic protections of your parents, there are still a LOT of things you can do about your person, personal waste stream, acquiring the skills and knowledge for a more sustainable life-style, and acquiring the tools and equipment needed for a number of sustainability activities. For example, can you repair a lamp, paint a piece of furniture, sew cloth dinner napkins, or use a piece of worn out clothing to make undies? Fixing, re-using, and upcycling things is a part of the zero waste equation.

    It seems as if the minimalist, de-clutter, and zero waste movements got captured by folks trying to sell stuff.

    • @BeccaDoesStuffYT
      @BeccaDoesStuffYT  2 года назад +1

      Yes. I notice that a lot of it has been commercialized which defeats the very purpose. I do share products that have helped me produce less waste, but I don’t benefit financially from it. As of right now, I’m not monetized, sponsored, etc. I make $0 on RUclips, and only share what has helped me, or I think may benefit others. I get disappointed when I see it become about sales, and not about the actual cause. If I ever got sponsored, I’d only advertise the stuff I believe in. And I do see other RUclipsrs that I believe have a moral compass when it comes to their sponsorships. Gittemary Johansen, The Simple Environmentalist, Shelbizlee, just to name a few. Glad to know there’s some people out there with a conscience. LOL

      @@BeccaDoesStuffYT No, no, no ....My comment had nothing to do with you or from what I've seen of your videos and channel. But then you aren't selling four, 2.5" squares of polyfiber based pieces of cloth whose edges have been commercially serged in a pink cardboard box for $16 as a sustainable, make-up wipe. Oh, and 2 to 4 sets are advised; $4/ 2.5" square, $32 for 8 squares, $64 for 16 squares. Of course you'll need "stuff" to wash them, a container to hold clean wipes, and a container to hold wipes to be washed. In the process, you won't be using repurposed margarine containers or your zero waste, minimalist, de-cluttering aesthetic will be ruined. - This is a real case scenario I quickly came across a couple of years ago when scratching the surface when mentions of the "zero waste aesthetic" were popping up too often to ignore any longer.

    We fail to understand that humans are critters within an ecosystem. All organic entities utilize inputs and produce outputs. In an ideal and balanced ecosystem system one entity's waste or excess becomes becomes another critters input. In the world of nature, often there become imbalances due excessive growth of one entity but there are systems in place tomp reduce populations, utilize extras, and other wise form a correction. A close examination of what happens to and in a compost pile is a good example.
    Even if we humans each had our own little space of ground on which to live fully sustainable in a fully balanced ecosystem, we would create waste; in a fully balanced system, our waste would become the very food and produce the habitat for some other critter. In the very real world, humans have questionablely utilized more than thier fair share of resources, questionablely created more waste than thier ecosystem can deal with, and created waste which the rest of thier ecosystem cannot utilize. I say questionablely because while a growing number of people believe it, there are still a number who do not. However if individuals look at thier sustainability profiles most of us have things we can do to make our lives more sustainable. And, unless you live on an island this must exist in a world that wasn't built for zero waste in most areas. It is what it is and the best we can do is the best we can do. But, if others are working towards sustainability, each in thier own individual ways it adds up.

    • @BeccaDoesStuffYT
      @BeccaDoesStuffYT  2 года назад

      Very well said! I couldn’t agree more. I often wonder how we got to where we are, and why the entities in power are not doing more to help correct it.

      @@BeccaDoesStuffYT My view of history? As we came out of the 1970's ecology movement and dealing with the ozone layer holes, this human as a critter in an ecosystem and also the conservation movements got caught up and picked up by an assortment of special interest groups by Ronald Regan's time in office. Many objected to humans being called critters or anything related to equivalency to other entities on the planet. Calling humans an entity in an ecosystem had significant EPA regulatory implications although EPA life went on to utilize humans as the injured entity in most of its last proposals that actually got enacted. This was the time of rebuilding the post energy crisis economy as a consumer and then service economy. It was a time that we began to disparage anything scientific and were deposing engineers from thier thrones of enlightenment while the undercurrent of wage stagnation was doing its thing. The realities of DDT regulation were hitting home and expanding to include more of an ecosystem approach, lead regulations were being bantered about and included a multi-species and ecosystem approach, the Judge Bolt fisheries decision with its ecosystem approach was being realized, the Spotted Owl was in the courts and relied on an ecosystem approach as were other endangered species, air and water quakity alarms were being brought to the forefront in which the word and concepts of ecosystem were part, and believe it or not climate change and global warming alarms were being sounded which included the word ecosystem. The word ecosystem which wasn't well undertood by many of the masses wasnt well embraced; calling humans an entity or a species wasn't embraced. Add to it, the word "conservation" was all but hijacked by business and industry to justify and explain why increased use of raw resources and assorted pollution was a good thing pretty much turned it and the concept of it into a blasphemous word and left a feeling not much different than a racial epithet.
