We are all on a journey separate but on the same road. We can see others who point for us the way but we will still have to find our way and to help others find their way.

I was reading about Alexander the Great recently on Wikipedia - his Empire extended to the Indian subcontinent at a time when Buddhism (as opposed to Hinduism) was the predominant religion.
That might explain some of the overlap?

Indeed it could. The Indo-Greek and Greco-Bactrian kingdoms in central Asia and what is now Afghanistan were ruled by descendants of the Greeks who came with Alexander. Their territories once extended into the Punjab area of northern India. There was even a Greek king named Menander who became Buddhist. Ashoka's writings tell of priests of Greek origin who went forth to spread Buddhist teachings; perhaps there was some mixing with Greek philosophies from the west too.

    1. Philosophy deals with the mind and systems of thought. 2. In the East there is non-duality ie your mind can’t understand it. EG Taoism you can analogize that working with The Tao is working with “what is natural” which gives you an idea, an approximation, but is not something that can be intellectually understood. 3. Meditation is to help escape the prison of the mind/thoughts.

You like memento mori; if you read about the teachings of the Buddha, this is actually the first teaching he gave! "Focus on the finitude of the body, how it rots and it's organs are separated when you die". When you read the Pali literature, after his first lesson he left for a few months and came back: half of his students had commited suicide. The Buddha asked his first attendant what had happened, and he told him the meditation on the body and death had sicked them so much, they committed suicide. So he invented a replacement on the first meditation, the one on death and gore of the body: and it was the meditation on stilling the mind. That is the history of the invention and necessity of eastern meditation! Memento Mori was prior as a lesson, even for the Buddha!

The Vikings meditated. Utiseta, is what they called it. But it is lost to history due to a lack of documentation and from Scandinavia converting to Christianity. We just know that the Vikings would sit down and do this thing.

Prayer is meditation and meditation is the highest form of prayer and contemplation. They are all one and the same, it’s just ego that tries to make differences and separation. Because we are all One and not separate, there is only one collective mind, the same truth is discovered in all different parts of the world. Now if you go to the Christian mystics you will find meditation, A Course in Miracles teaches meditation …they just call it prayer or contemplation or silence. Centering prayer is one example of meditation

This is so misled. Prayer is absolutely a counterpart to or even form of meditation. I can't believe this isn't more known.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Meditation is central in Indian philosophy and the Abrahamic religions simply don't have it

@@abhay_csSam Harris' earlier books are about his personal experiences with meditation and prayer in Indian and Tibetan religions. I think he comes from a secular Jewish background.

I wish I could take Sam Harris seriously about anything again. But his abilities in logical deduction took a nose dive. Not here. Just in general.

Praying is a way of reflecting and meditatingi is to The individual is the problem. What ever you do you have everything inside and no one else can give you anything but you and what you accept for yourself

What nonsense 🤦🏼‍♂️ prayer does nothing except maybe help you appease your anxiety for your “sin” of the moment .Smh . How many young innocent children die of cancer and starvation across the globe every single yr ? How many families pray to yaweh to spare their child only to lose them forever ? Take a moment and look up how many of them die . Over 3 million per yr just from starvation . I’ll leave it up to you to see how many more die of childhood cancer . What a silly silly comment you made. It shows that you haven’t the slightest idea about what meditation is for. Maybe If you knew anything about it , you wouldn’t have to pray for all your foolish transgressions bc you’d be more mindful of your thoughts behavior choices and live more consciously instead of like a automaton . Get a clue
