The Netherlands isn't just Amsterdam, just like England isn't just London, and Italy isn't just Rome. Just annoying at times to hear from foreign friends who've only visited Amsterdam once and say that everyone here smokes weed and that we got prostitutes on every corner or something lol.

    1. This is why every person (that isn't from Amsterdam) hates Amsterdam. Too crowded and the bit of authenticity the city has is overshadowed by touristic marketing. To the Rest of the Netherlands it doesn't help that some 'Amsterdammers' kind of take their pride too far and turn it into arrogance.
I usually advice people to visit Utrecht/Delft/Leiden/Groningen/Dordrecht or cities like that. Older city centres and a lot more authentic, less swamped with tourists. I'm from Rotterdam which doesn't offer a lot for tourists imho (unless you're into modern art and architecture).
    2. On the OV-chip card. All Dutch people know we are being robbed with the OV-chipcard. Since the introduction prices have pretty much doubled and the fact that we had to add some typical Dutch 'bureaucratie' doesn't help.
    3. Waste meat is a rather broad term in the Netherlands. As we typically consider a lot of steak cuts 'waste'. Usually in bitterballen either beef or veal is used and stewing meats (typically sukade a.k.a. shoulder and ribmeat) are shredded and added to a flavored roux, breaded and deep fried.
    4. The Dutch are a harsh group of people. In the sake of honesty and transparency we tend to be pretty direct. Having said that, it's usually quite hard to insult us (getting easier with the whole PC-movement).

I consider Dutch food to be whatever we cook, because our actual cuisine really is just a collection of everything (especially if you consider foods from previous colonies to be integrated in Dutch cooking culture). On a side note; I got to say, stamppot is a brilliant and versatile dish.

"Do you *want* to help me or not?" Pretty sure no one in the service industry anywhere in the world actually *wants* to help anyone. It's their job, they do it to make money, not because they have a desire to serve others. Dutch people tend to be more obvious and honest about it than, say, Americans. And a waiter/server or anyone cannot split themselves into two people. Wait your turn. If they were helping you then you wouldn't want them to drop you for the next customer that comes in and demands to be helped right away.

Let's take a closer look at the bitterbal. Don't be scared. No need. Wikipedia helps out. "Bitterballen (plural of bitterbal) are a Dutch meat-based snack, made by making a very thick stew thickened with roux and beef stock and generously loaded with meat, refrigerating the stew until it firms, and then rolling the thick mixture into balls which then get breaded and fried. Seasonings in the
base stew usually include onions, salt and pepper, parsley and nutmeg. Most recipes include nutmeg and there are also variations using curry powder or that add in finely chopped vegetables such as carrot. The ingredients are combined and cooked, then refrigerated for the mixture to firm up. Once firm, the filling is rolled into balls roughly 3 to 4 cm in diameter, then battered in a breadcrumb and egg mixture and deep-fried. They are typically served with a ramekin or small bowl of mustard for dipping. They are eaten in Suriname, the Netherlands Antilles, the Netherlands, Belgium, and to some degree in Indonesia.
Bitterballen are very similar to the Dutch variant of kroketten (plural of kroket) in their ingredients and preparation/cooking methods, as well as flavour, though the larger kroketten have a distinct oblong sausage shape, but with a similar diameter. The bitterbal derives its name from a generic word for certain types of herb-flavoured alcoholic beverages, called a bitter in Dutch, and are popularly served as part of a bittergarnituur, a selection of savoury snacks to go with drinks, at pubs or at receptions in the Netherlands."
When an animal is used for meat, you get some nice big chunks for steaks and such, and some smaller parts, that can not be served as a whole, but are still good meat. That's what is used for bitterballen as well. So don't worry about inedible and weird ingredients. They are not allowed by law.
Hope you dare to enjoy them now.

Most foreigners get a house easier than a dutch It is our government who allows them to do this. So i don't blame people. I Blame politic party like VVD. Who are selling the Netherlands. Houses are to live in,not speculate. So that's why it's Impossible for young people to buy a new house. Average a House cost 300.000 euro. They can't effort it and that's why we have small houses. Imagine we had a sign for every rule we've got in our overly regulated country though :')
We'd be writing half a lawbook on every corner of the street and nobody will bother reading any of it.
I think we could do with a few more signs here and there because as it is we've summarized the summary of the red line of the rules but yea there is a point where nobody will even bother reading it if you detail every rule about everything xD Look at how few people actually read ToS and Privacy Agreements, that'll be our entire country about the signs if we do this :')
Take the OV-chipkaart for example. The back refers to the terms and conditions of Trans Link Systems B.V. which no doubt contains every detail about checking in, out, the validity of the product in different conditions and liability clauses. There's a link and a phone-number referred too where you can obtain said information. But hardly anyone reads it, just a few more will call the number for a specific inquiry. Heck, I doubt most people have even read the back of the card at all, hence people missed the rules and mess up sometimes.

14 women, 2 manlets. How about some equal representation?
Also, Amsterdam isn't the Netherlands, just like London isn't the UK, and Paris isn't France.

Another interesting video, I like those video's. They learn us so much about our selves, but also learn about the expats (and ofcourse about tourists too). But to the first person in this video (the elderly man) I'd like to ask; where in the world people from the Netherlands, of France, Spain, Italy, Poland, Russia, Korea.... etcetera, do you find signs for thet use of OV chipcard?
No offence to you, I understand this problem. It sucks of course. But this is not special Dutch problem. This you find almost everywhere. And Dutch, German, Cambodian, Chinese, Japanese and most other Asian and African people will almost find anywhere signs in Dutch of in their language. So yes, this is a problem everywhere, and for everyone.
But there is one solution: Google translate ! It is not perfect, but it made me correspond with a Russian woman, who I met on holiday. Sometimes you have to fill in some dots... I hope you see this reaction (but I rather hope, someone told you before me. So that you enjoy your time ... or your life in the Netherlands) !

Hey guys, you should go on vacation somewhere further into the Netherlands. So you can feel and see what the rest of the country looks like. Amsterdam is really just a small part of our country that is really different than anything else you'll see here. I'm not so fond of it. When I visit Amsterdam I feel like I'm in a different country, because it's nothing like any other part of the Netherlands.

with the ov chip card when forgetting to check out or whatnot u can go to any station with service and u can let your card be checked and they will pay u back any money u might have lost do to human mistakes, will take a few days to be charged to your account but he could have gotten his 60 bucks back.
Though most won't go through the hassle and let it be unless it is convenient.

Lol stop being so butthurt you lil bitch. No country is perfect, they probably dont find their own country perfect either. They were literally asked what they dont like as much here, so they answered, you expect them to like everything?. I'm dutch and even tho i love my country, there are some things i don't like here, so what? Should i leave the Netherlands now? Nah, stop being triggered.

why stairs are so steep in the netherlands in old buildings was because we had an economic boom back then but real estate was tight. so the plot of lands were not big meaning they had to build up. since the plots of land again were not that big it forced the builders of then to come up with a different solution hence why there are steep stairs the steps are about 15 centimeters while a normal step today has a step length of about 30 cm
