Man, this movie was and still is underated, but its actually an all around perfect movie
Wolfish it's not really underated.
You feel it deserves its relative obscurity? How come?
Tyco finessed my trueys lmfao ur name fam
So you'd describe this movie as Fantastic? ;)
Fantastic not perfect
Yea it's a lot deeper than what the trailer is portraying. It's incredibly hilarious in its quirky charming way but this movie is downright lovable. Gonna buy it tomorrow

Is it just me or does this trailer kind of set the wrong mood for the film?
Entirely.
Precisely.
Andre D yep
how?
MrGabeanator The movie is a moderately mature, extremely witty, and stylistically excellent film that this trailer makes to look like a cheap, disposable, Minions-esque, keep-the-kids-entertained-for-90-minutes exercise in mediocrity. Otherwise the trailer's fine.
Such an underrated film
One of my favorite movies of all time

It's not underrated, where are you getting that from?
the thing about this movie is that it doesn’t even seem like acting, it all just seems so genuine.
Trailer's awful, movie is really great.
+iCoNiC-Gaming Yeah. It's like they're trying to appeal to people who wouldn't even appreciate Roald Dahl.
Sorry about this reply. The guy next to me bumped into me and I tapped "reply" so I thought it would be courteous to reply instead of just leaving you hanging. Sorry again!
typical Wes Anderson

@@4tchilling956 trust me, it really doesn't match. From the tone, to the music choice. It just feels off. The trailer makes the movie appear quite up beat and chaotic when it really isn't, this movie is clever and well put together. And don't even get me started on the voiceover, it's just ridiculous. Looks more like some quick, cash-in, money grab if you've only seen the trailer.
I remember watching this as a kid and after viewing it now I can say without a doubt, that it's far more enjoyable as an adult.

Captainice Alvarado Up. To be fair 2009 was an INCREDIBLE year for Best Animated Feature. Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Princess and the Frog, The Secret of Kells, and Up. But I’m glad Up won. Lol
Little1Cave I agree
I have never seen a worse trailer for an amazing movie
The movie was so damn good .
I like the trailer.
that's why it bombed at the box office, movie is a masterpiece but the trailer ? the opposite
This is why it was a box office failure. Parents didnt allow kids to see it because it had smoking drinking a violence, teenagers and adults who arent wes anderson fans didnt see it because it was advertised as a kids movie. It was so amazing though!
This is why I love my mom. When I was a kid, I was usually lecturing her for letting me see something scarring on the screen. I don't my mom even caught the adult themes in this movie.
Layann Basileh You were lecturing her on allowing you to see awesome movies? Why would you do that?
Nathan C. Not stuff like this. More like freaky horror movies.
The movie fantastic, this trailer not so fantastic.

"Based on the book by the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"
lol, do they not think people would have heard of Roald Dahl before?
The UK trailer had his name. I guess maybe the makers assumed his work is better known than he is outside of the UK.
A lot of younger people haven't in this decade.
***** unfortunate as it is as a whole we americans are not well versed in any literature modern or classic. it is a sad state of affairs when books with pictures of cats with amusing captions are selling better than George Orwell.
***** Good for you! Still entirely missing my point though.. guess I can't expect people to be able to see past the ends of their own noses though.

True
It took me over a decade to finally watch this movie.
It was worth the wait.
"Based on the book by the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". Rage.
Why rage?
People should know how Road Dahl is
MrSwadloon People should know what they know lol. You can't expect everyone to have the same tastes as you and them say they"should" know who someone is, that's ridiculous!
+Little Leigh Its not about taste, it's just that he's so well-known, people should know his name and what he's known for. I bet if they just said his name in this trailer, most people would know who he is and what he's known for (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, for example)
Same as "From the director of Titanic" with Avatar.
Oh I love this movie and it was a perfect stop motion animation created by a artistic director, Wes Anderson. It may be the classic like "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," but this one is fantastic adaptation I remember watching this movie in a quiet limited theater and it was so good. The story is about Mr. Fox and his family gather around to steal chickens and food, but these three hunters are trying to kill them and Mr. Fox's brilliant idea is to keep them and his animal friends stay underground while they're planning to steal food and all that stuff. The animation looks good and it was done by Anderson who knows how to set quality for one set of the cinematography and the creatures look cool and the cast were great including George Clooney is awesome as Mr. Fox. The film does sticks closely to the Roald Dahl's adaptation and clearly they said its for adults because children wanted to see a better a family film than this. But it's for everyone to enjoy. Classic film.

I'm INCREDIBLY excited for this. Wes Anderson is one of my favorite directors, and how could anyone go wrong with Roald Dahl?!
Sometimes the tone of their voice and the speed at which they say things trick me into thinking they're saying something profound
Joseph Grant Yeah that was kinda fucked up. I just really love this movie.
Sounding smart is an honorable and hard-to-master art (that's why I'm subscribed to Nerdwriter1).

This is pure, old-school, stop-motion wonderfulness.
If you don't like it, that's just fine. But it was made the way it is for a reason. Stop-motion styled filming is an art of it's own. And I find it wonderful.

I just got done watching this movie for the first time for college, and I gotta say one of the better animated movies I’ve seen in a LONG time. Wish o would have seen it when it came out.
I'm so cussing excited about the Criterion release of this film.
One of our favourites! Wes Anderson's beautiful stop-motion animated film. Love everything about it: the tone, the concept, fantastic art, music, acting (George Clooney& Meryl Streep were incredible!!). Watched it in the cinema at least twice& few times on TV.
This trailer doesn't sound like a Wes Anderson trailer, more like a Dreamworks or just a comedy. I guess it's probably to make the film look more profitable.
Eri Pena well, considering Fantastic Mr. Fox was a financial failure when it came out, it’s safe to say the attempt to make it look “profitable” failed.
Miserably.
Man Meryl Streep voice is so beautiful ❤️
Great movie, I wish I saw it in theaters, but I just saw it recently. My 11 year-old self at the time decided to see Alvin and the Chipmunks instead :/
Don't feel bad, I made the same mistake.
As kids we wouldnt've seen beyond a shitty trailer. Back then I ditched it too thinking it was gonna be some shitty indie type of animation, only last year I got myself curious enough to check it and oh my have I fallen in love with it!
I've seen both; if given a choice at the movie theater though, I would've picked Mr. Fox having known nothing about it and having never seen a Wes Anderson film before, just on the poster alone. There's like no excuse there.
Where can we see it,

Sorry for late reply, but in a Wes Anderson film, everything is in it’s ‘native’ voice, to better the tone.
Terrible adaption, fantastic film. There is a difference.
The movie has some GREAT moments. My favorites are when they're rescuing Kristofferson and when they saw the wolf. The background music is just epic.

Saw this with my kids as an adult and I just loved it. Thank the creators for going through the tortuous pain of stop motion to give us such a fun and stylized film.
'I can fit through there, you wanna know why?'
'Why?'
'Because I'm LITTLE!!!'
That was logical. I love this freaking movie, it's so quirky!
Underrated movie. One of the best animated movies ever. Really love the animation style.
For people saying it's ugly and stop motion can look better, while it may sound pretentious, you dont simply get it. Wes Anderson has always had an aesthetic to his films and this is no exception. The wide shots, the close ups and the overheads are all part of his vision. For example, most stop motion films use a certain type of plastic for hair, this uses actual fur. Wes Anderson knew this would look weird and loved it.
I had to watch this in the 8th grade!
Which really isn't that long ago..
It was absolutely amazing!
Came back to this 9 yrs later after watching in cinemas 9 yrs ago. Bunch of nostalgia
I loved this movie so much as a young child , it was my favorite movie.
It still remains my favorite lol and I saw this years ago
nostalgia. Remember watching this when I was a kid. I think I didn't finish watching it because it's kind of disturbing and I understand nothing. But I also love the background because it's quite comforting. Would love to watch this soon again. Sadly it's still underrated. I think I watched this one on a tape or in our TV (by using a usb).
I was really small at that time, and I couldn't even understand what they said, but one thing I loved was their animation. Now, when I rewatch this, I just fall in love with this again, it's so nostalgic. My childhood was literally all over “Horton hears a who!” and “Fantastic Mr.Fox”. ❤️
Same for me with those EXACT two movies. Did we have the same childhood?
Someone else was watching fantastic Mr Fox in June 2024

I love how this movie isn't your average family film, the script clearly has Wes Anderson written all over it. Very good film indeed.

2009 was an amazing year for children’s movies.
yes!! ^-^
Fantastic Mr. Fox is a family movie directed by Wes Anderson. It is a stop motion animated film that includes much of the typical humor and cinematography style that you’d find in most Anderson films. It was based off of the children’s book of the same name written by famous british children’s author Roald Dahl. Originally released at the London Film Festival in 2009, it was nominated for several awards and has won several times as both Best Animated Feature/Film and Best Adapted Screenplay.
The movie follow the story of one Mr. Fox (George Clooney) a fox who in his past had stolen from farmers, but gave up that life when his wife Felicity (Meryl Streep) began expecting their son Ash (Jason Schwartzman). After 12 fox years (just 2 and a half human ones) Mr. Fox, who works as a journalist, goes through a midlife crisis and decides to pull off one last big heist. Despite being successful in his plan, the farmers retaliate and he ends up endangering his family, friends, and bringing about the destruction of his entire neighborhood. He ends up having to take responsibility for his actions, and find a way to save his family and town. Throughout the movie, many complex interfamilial relationships and emotions are explored in a way that, while not outright stated, are clear enough for a person to both pick up on and relate to in a very real way.
Balance: The first media key
Fantastic Mr Fox, is a family film because it is able to appeal to everyone in the family. Although based on a children’s book and is a generally light-hearted movie and comedic movie, it holds a lot of depth, decisions, and emotional conflicts and complexities that both younger and older adults can understand and appreciate. It holds that balance between the ages and while entertaining goofy antics. This is showcased in the difficulty within the Fox family of connecting with and understanding each other both in parental-child relationships and sibling-sibling relationships. This is shown constantly throughout the movie in interactions with Mr. Fox, his son Ash, and his nephew Kristofferson.
Attitude Awareness: The second media key
The first thing you learn about Mr Fox is that he is a very confident and cocky individual. He is used to doing what he pleases and having it just work out for him, and his confidence isn’t misplaced either. However, despite this independence he understands the role of a parent. When Felicity is expecting and asks him to change careers for the sake of their child he, though it’s obvious he loves what he does, agrees without a single complaint. Although many times throughout the movie he makes mistakes, as a parent often does, he constantly strives to better provide for his family and to take care of them.
Dignity of the Human Person: The third media key
There are many aspects throughout the film in which this media key is highlighted, but it is particularly evident in the character of the rat. Rat (Willem Defoe) is a minor villain in the film, a lackey who guards the alcoholic cider cellar of one of the farmers. He was an old classmate of Mr. and Mrs. Fox, and is implied to have gone down a bad path and is now an alcoholic working in exchange for a share of the hard cider. Later in the film he attempts to kidnap Ash and during a fight with Mr Fox ends up getting electrocuted. Knowing he is going to die, he reveals the location of Mr Fox’s nephew who had been previously taken. Within his last moments, he is gathered around by the other animals, and Mr fox speaks to him kindly, wondering why he spent all his year wastefully, and gives him his last request, a taste of cider. His death is solemnly mourned, a quiet moment taken, addressing and understanding that the actions he took in life were not good ones, but that didn’t mean that he himself was evil or his death was to be treated any less respectfully.
Truth-Filled: The fourth media key
One area in which truth is evident is the relationship between Mr. Fox and his wife Felicity. At the core of things, Mr. Fox, although he loves his family and wants to provide for them, he is a very proud and selfish person. Every action and decision he makes throughout the film when he gets overzealous brings about harm and destruction to his friends and his family. His recklessness even encourages the children in his family to act similarly, resulting in the kidnapping of his nephew Kristofferson. This is true in real life as well, when a person acts selfishly or out of pride it can affect everyone, most of all those who are closest to you. This is something Mr. Fox has to learn throughout the movie and understand that he has to stop doing things for his own personal pride, but rather for the well being of his family.
Inspiring: The fifth media key
Fantastic Mr. Fox is especially inspiring when showing the growth that occurs in the characters of both Mr Fox and Ash. They both start out, not as bad people, but unhappy in their role and in their lives at the moment. They are people who are dealing with their own unique struggles and weaknesses. As the story develops and they both begin to grow, there is a key moment for each of them that is integral to their growth. For Mr. Fox, it is when his nephew is kidnapped and he realizes that it is because the example he has been setting for his family has caused them to endanger themselves. For Ash, it is after his dad has gone through his pivotal moment, and Mr Fox is able to fully address his son, apologize for his mistakes, and give the encouragement and validation that his son desperately needed as a young person. At the end of the film, though they have been through much and financially and spatially they are in a much worse position, they have both grown and are able to be happier and more content with their lives, as well as have a closer relationship with each other.
Skillfully developed: The sixth media key
The movie is an animated stop motion film that is spectacularly done. Again, it has been nominated for and won several best animated film/features awards. The combination of the puppet designs along with sets, color schemes, and the soundtrack create a beautiful film that feels perfectly homey, folksy, and brings a wave of nostalgia and the season of fall. The cinematography is very Anderson-esque, with common compilations of short shots that communicate emotions even without any words. The script of the movie is also beautifully done, with little quips and common sentences, it feels like very natural dialogue and keeps the perfect balance between being clear enough for children to understand and witty and complex enough for adults to get more out of.
Motivated by and Relevant to Experience: The seventh media key
Ash (the twelve year old son of the Foxes), spends the story struggling with his identity. The whole movie he is told he is just “different,” then others around him. He can’t understand why people treat him differently and spends much of his time angry and bitter about this fact. It becomes worse when his cousin comes to stay with them and his father connects very well with him. Ash can’t understand the preferential treatment that ensues, as practically everyone around him, excluding his mother, seems to prefer Kristofferson. That comparison with another person and struggles with connectivity with his parent are emotional burdens on him that manifest themselves as anger, resentment, and boasting. It isn't until after his father, having gone through his own character growth, talks with him and reassures him that he is able to grow himself. These kinds of issues are things that almost all people struggle with: feelings of anger and resentment, family and parental problems, dealing with comparison, and even just being a young person struggling to find their identity.
Fantastic Mr. Fox is a really is a fantastic movie. Although belonging a bit more to the indie movie scene, it has been exceedingly popular amongst all movie enjoyers. It appeals to all ages and hold a high reputation for its quirkiness and comedy, as well as its comforting and heartfelt nature, and it's unique and pretty visual aesthetics.
