that first time Lana Turner is seen in the movie, dropping her lipstick is Hollywood history. Without any doubt one of the greatest film noirs.

Her lipstick symbolizes the power in her femininity. It's also interesting that they chose a blond-haired Cora. In Cain's novella, Cora is black-haired and self-conscious that some people mistake her for a Mexican-American.

I’m halfway through watching this film.
It’s a cracking watch so far. And a big part why is because Garfield and Turner were both excellent. It’s odd; apparently Turner didn’t like it when she first heard that Garfield was cast, asking “couldn’t have they got someone attractive?”. But it’s clear that there was bonafide chemistry and sexual tension between the two in the scenes.
Garfield wasn’t the best looking actor (and he looked pretty Jewish, which ironically none of his characters were) but he was good looking enough, the sort of common handsome, and he had such charisma and screen presence. He really carried this role in particular as he was also a bit rough around the edges, you can easily picture Garfield having been a bit of a drifter and having lived some of a hard life himself (before making it as an actor). Garfield really seemed to embody someone who is smart but has been up against it his entire life.

What hurt me the most with this film is that it could have been the best noir ever, but there are too many absurd stuff and at the end i was full of rage and deception. The first apparition of lana turner is haunting me since.

I was really into this movie until about half way. Then it just started with endless twists and turns in a whole new storyline. Without spoiling it for others, I would have liked it much more if it had only involved the 3 original characters and how that ended... maybe with one last betrayal thrown in.

Classic, The beach scene is the beginning of "femme fatale" corruption. They don't make movies like this anymore. Could sit here all day and analyze this. No, never was a theater of a film major, just like the classics.

Lana Turban.🙄 Garfield was good, at least. But, tbh, you're not going to get the real story in 1946. Censors! It's a tale of dirty, evil adulterous sex and murder. That had to wait until 1981 with Nicholson and Lange. Btw: why do they spoil the whole movie in this trailer?
