I was certainly thinking King Diamond meets Bruce Dickinson here. Indeed long but certainly very enjoyable. Maybe they could have made it into 2 albums like Keeper Of The Seven Keys parts 1 & 2

Necrotic Nick- Honestly, doing this as a double album might have worked a bit better but overall this was a killer album and honestly the most ambitious thing they've done yet.

This sounds pretty cool. At the start of each song, you guys are like “I was NOT expecting this!” Just that is a recommendation in itself.
Edit Btw:”Or roll into it”. Lolz. Almost space my Johnnie Walker Black Label across the screen.

Portrait should have been huge (at least in the "metal underground") 10 years ago when the recorded an amazing cover of the unreleased Judas Priest song "Mother Sun". How metal isnt it to record and release an unreleased song from such a classic band and do it that well. Talk about a cultural act! Judas Priest fans that have been longing for an official release of this song, only played live by JP in the 70's, should love this when it surely sounds alot like it would have if JP released it themselves I belive.

Necrotic Nick- Yeah, I was surprised with that big surge of retro heavy metal this band didn't pick up more steam. I think even In Solitude got more press than Portrait did. It's good to see them still going and putting out some of the wildest music of their career. I honestly haven't heard that cover so I'm gonna have to check that one out. I just have their full lengths so I don't have any of the extras.

4.5/5.0. Definitely going to be on my year-end list. Everything flowed so well from beginning to end. I loved every song. I was worried about the length and amount of songs. Definitely nothing to worry. Amazing record.

    Hey guys, speaking of longgggggg…
I’ve got a question for you all. Please make it an episode: What’s your favorite extra-long metal song (no Pink Floyd allowed!!). Let’s say 12 minutes or more.
For me there are two I go back and forth between :
Soil of the Incestuous (The Ruins of Beverast). Headphones please Home alone and chug a few, perhaps smoke a bowl (NO acid). You will shit your pants, guaranteed. Don’t be put off by the production, it is layered, intricate and sooo absorbing
Then there’s Das Blutarch from Minenwerfer. Fuck me, that is just a banger of a song. The songwriting and musicianship on display is out of this world. So many movements in this song, so much emotion, so bleak and cold. It’s a unicorn in their catalogue too. They’ve got lots of amazing songs, but nothing sounds like this.
They are both black metal I guess, but wholly different and unique.
If you haven’t heard them, give them a listen. Fucking amazing.
Sorry for the multiple edits. Excess of enthusiasm and fire water. Really though, I could listen to those two songs every day for a year and not get bored.
Final edit, I promise c just wanted to say that the two albums these tracks come of; Rain Upon the Impure and Alpenpässe respectively, are to my mind two of the greatest black metal albums ever made, period. And know they’re not exactly canonical but particularly Alpenpässe I hardly ever hear anyone talk no g about and it’s a shame. It’s really well produced, authentic and emotional with amazing tunes all the way through. It’s a no skip concept album about a particular World War One campaign.

Necrotic Nick- Man, I can probably think of 20 + songs over the 12 min mark that I love. I don't know if I could do just a few. Could be fun... but I'm gonna include Pink Floyd lol. I only have the last one from Ruins of Beverast but I still need to jam more of their stuff. I'm not familiar with Minenwerfer though so I'll have to look into that one.

So glad you guys managed to get to this one, its an awesome album, i like it more every time i listen to it. I love that they have stepped outside the box a bit with this release. These guys and Attic are flying the flag for the Mercyful Fate/KD style metal!

Necrotic Nick- It was hard to pick for these last 2 reviews so we left it up to the fans with that poll and our fans picked 2 awesome listens with this and the new Kvaen. Yeah, this went well beyond my expectations with this band. This album is easily their most dynamic and versatile to date and I really dig it. Still need to check out Attic. I've heard a lot of good things.

  • @Oldy-Sepulchre

Quite surprising this album has a pretty low on rating on the Storm of Metal. I feel like people don't mention enough how strong traditional heavy metal releases are the past few years. This year we've already had this, Ecclesia, Traveler, Early Moods, Morgul Blade, Attic and Lord Goblin. If you haven't heard any of these then I beg of you to seek them out.

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  3 месяца назад

Necrotic Nick- I didn't see any other reviews but generally I don't really look for them until we're done with ours. I can see it being a bit much for people but I don't think this bad by any stretch. A lot went into this and honestly I think it's one of their more impressive albums musically. To me these guys have always been solid at the heavy metal aspects but this one has a lot more going on with it and I'd say most of it really works. Morgul Blade and Attic are already on my list to check out so I'll have to look into the others. I'll keep an eye out for their stuff while I'm down in Florida too.
