I love when someone tells another person they are offended by something and that person mansplains to them why they couldn't possibly be offended by that thing. If someone finds something offensive, they find it offensive. You may not agree with why they are offended or think their opinion isn't important to you, but it doesn't change the fact that they are offended.

This was just another list of tattoos people don't like, not anything that can warn you someone isn't a good person. Australian here: The Southern Cross is a constellation which can be easily seen from Australia, and is also on the Australian Flag. The tattoo is a common 'bogan' thing (kinda our version of a chav), and most people I've met with one are a bit racist and wilfully ignorant about our horrible history, or regret it. Common accompanying tattoos include your postcode and last name which for me are a package deal of Aussie tattoo red flags😅

In America, patriotism has become something of a cult. The people who slap flags on everything including themselves are often the same people chanting about traditionalism and the "American way," and advocate violence in order to maintain that way of life. Goes double if it's the flag with the thin blue line. Incidentally, traditionalism tends to include a healthy dose of sexism, racism, homophobia, etc. Tragically, the American flag really has become a red flag. If it's an older, faded tattoo, though, it might be from the bygone days when patriotism really was just a love of country.

Yes, but, I admittedly don't think there's been a point when patriotism was "just a love of country" since before Vietnam. There might be an argument for the 80s, but that really wasn't a love of patriotism and more a love of sports and winning. Even during 9/11 the types of people who would get American flag tattoos were the same people accusing all Muslims of being terrorists. We have a pretty unfortunate history of patriotism being uncomfortably connected to racism.

As an autstic body modification apprentice, please everyone remember that the infinity symbol represents the autistic community. It actually has heavy significance to alot of us

    • @bottomofastairwell
      @bottomofastairwell 2 года назад +178

I didn't know that. I got my infinity symbol in college because I majored in math. And we used that symbol in my favorite classes (calculus 1,2 3, and differential equations). And I also got it to remind me that the possibilities are infinite which is meaningful given its placement, because I got it done over some particularly nasty self harm scars. So when people say it's "basic" it ticks me off, because they have no idea just how meaningful that tattoo is to me (not to mention that seeing it and not wanting to mess it up became excellent motivating to stop self harming). I just don't like people who judge others without knowing their story in general. A million people have a semicolon tattoo, but it's because it means something important to a lot of people.
I'm glad I know about the infinity symbols link to autism now though. One more reason to appreciate it.

i have to disagree with the language one. it's too general. in the case of east asian languages, yes, they are usually done for the aesthetic, and it's often cultural appropriation. but i know a lot of people who get tattoos in french/latin/ancient greek because it's an influential quote that doesn't translate well to english and means something to them. as a greek speaker, i think it's fine to get an ancient greek quote if you don't speak greek. we shouldn't assume appropriation when the tattoo might be more meaningful

In regards to quotes I personally don’t care for lettering tattoos, they’re just not me, so for now I don’t see myself getting any tattoos that contain words, but my boyfriend has a tattoo in Japanese that means bushido, and he loves it and it looks good on him, so who cares.

My aunt has a ton of red flag tattoos, most of them she saw on the internet and copied. I myself at one point was going to follow her, but I've learned not to because a lot of the times tattoos have special meaning to an individual. When you copy it, I feel like it depletes the meaning to the original individual. Side note tattoos in a foreign language of which you don't understand/speak, would forever make me laugh when it's then translated. I've even seen a court case where a girl sued her best friend who said she knew mandarin, so she trusted her with the tattoo idea. 😂

And, to be clear, I don't even generally assume people with those tattoos are racist, I generally just assume they stopped reading/watching at Goblet of Fire and missed all the other horrific shit the Deatheaters did or were said to have done. I hadn't really connected any of the death eater ideas to real life, I just thought "wizard bad guy cool". I was still innocent enough to think the Allies beat fascism for good in WWII. I knew hardcore racists were still a thing, but thought those guys are all batshit crazy or joined a gang in prison. They couldn't possibly be the middle aged dude down the street.
Then I started paying attention to what was happening, the rise of the alt right online before the 2016 American presidential election, the spread of alt right and Q anon beliefs from 4chan trolls to facebook dads. I came out as trans in 2017... later Rowling went full mask off transphobic.

I'm not saying "you shouldn't have this tattoo because of xyz" or "everyone with xyz tattoo is eViL!!!1!". The issue I have is when someone dismisses the actual issues behind the symbol and its creator, that, to me, feels shortsighted.
Like seriously consider looking into why JKR is kinda awful and how the HP books are not always advocating the best morals beyond just the obvious wizard fascist stuff. (See Umbridge and the centaurs, S.P.E.W, Dumbledore dating proto-wizard fascist, the entirety of Gringotts and its goblins, Snape's treatment before going wizard fascist, Snape's treatment of children, Dumbledore's treatment of Harry, Sirius, Lupin, Hagrid, etc, the piss poor analogy of HIV and werewolves, the cultural disgrace that was the entirety of the website and all of its subsequent nonsense, the entire issue with JKR and her blatant transphobia, I could go on but no onw wants to listen to me rant, even myself.)
Like I have no doubt it's a cool looking tattoo. Snakes and skulls are badass! But framing the tattoo as a dark mark or deatheater tattoo may cause someone more trouble than it's worth due to the misunderstandings that can occur.
It isn't grasping at straws but pointing out the facts that can cause people to have negative reactions if the person isn't aware of what other possible meanings their words or actions can have.
It's like my first name and my father's last name (which isn't my legal last name since family stuff) both begin with an "S". If my mother or father wanted to tattoo my intials as such, having "SS" on their bodies could easily be misconstrued as aligning themselves with a hate group. While that wouldn't be their intention, the cultural zeitgeist and history would not be kind to their ignorance.
This is just my opinion though, so feel free to disagree and I wish you well!

I don't see a Death Eater tattoo any different than someone getting a symbol from the dark side in Star Wars or a villain in a horror film. Some people just like fictional villains. There's a lot of nazi symbolism for the dark side in Star Wars, it doesn't mean every Kylo or Vader fan are neo-nazis or some shit. Or someone having a killer from a horror on them doesn't mean they'd be a Bundy groupie in real life. It seems like a massive leap to me to conflate these things.

I wanted a death eater tattoo for so long, I only recently decided against getting it. Not because of the meaning (like, obviously death eaters are very bad people, but they are not real and the tattoo irl can symbolise something completely different) but because J. K. Rowling is a transphobic bigoted a**hole.
I don't think this tattoo is a red flag. Like I said, it can mean something different than relating to death eaters. For example you could like the aesthetic of it and are a HP fan, or you could relate to morally conflicted characters like Draco Malfoy or Severus Snape. It's up to the person on who's arm (or body) it is, to interpret it.

Sometimes the language is part of the message & a translation woud lose certain amount of context. It pays to check several sources to make sure the words & grammar are correct.

Recently I've been looking into tattoo designs to see if I could possibly get one and most of the ones I like are quotes. Some ones that currently stand out to me are: "You. You are alive.", "The universe said, you are not alone.", "You are the player. Wake up.", "To cure it of sorrow would be to destroy it." With a wilting/falling apart rose, "Do I aim for the skies?", "Everything must come to an end eventually." With a broken compass, and "And the player dreamed again."
It'll be hard to make up my mind when I finally do get a tattoo

I loved listening to you chat about this; thank you!
One of my issues with judging people for having "trendy" tattoos is that what's fashionable changes constantly so you can end up with something trendy that wasn't when you got it. So far, that's thankfully only happened to me with how I dress, and that's weird enough. Like people's whole interpretation of who you are as a person shifts, when you haven't changed anything about yourself at all! So strange.
Also, speaking as a Scot, since I've seen Celtic tattoos mentioned in other comments: fascists who steal elements of our culture and twist them to symbolise their disgusting ideology belong in the bin for thieving, as well as for, y'know, being fascists. Anyone who lives somewhere where that's happened, but wants something Celtic, could stick some kind of anti-racist/anti-fascist one next to it, or combine the two somehow. It'd be sad if, because of those shitheads, people felt totally unable to get anything from an entire genre that they feel a connection to.
