  • I spend a week with the 2024 Subaru WRX TR to see how the TR upgrades as well as the 2024 changes to the WRX affect it, for better and for worse. I also discuss how it compares to the upcoming WRX tS and its other competitors. What do you think about the 2024 WRX TR? Thanks to Subaru for providing this vehicle to review.

I had a 2022 loaded 6-speed WRX and loved it, but the car just became average to drive after 30k miles. I recently traded it in on a 2024 TR and I can’t believe how much fun this car is to drive. The recaros are SO comfortable and I like them. Better than the regular buckets. The bolsters are perfect. The steering and suspension is so much better. I love the firmness and crisp turn in compared to the regular WRX. Also, the brakes are awesome. Mine don’t squeak at all. As a practical daily, it has amazing interior space and AWD practicality for all seasons and car seats in the back. I totally disagree with most of the complaints Matt has in this video. I have wireless CarPlay and it’s fast and works well. I do agree with the eyesight complaints. I don’t want that crap in my car and I hate that I can’t fully turn it off. If you set the cruise control and come up on someone it automatically slows you down. I don’t want that feature and I want to shut it off but Subaru doesn’t let you.

I did the sane, traded in 2022 premium wrx for this 2024 tr pretty much the same as what Matt drove in ignition red. I can certainly feel the improvements but more for a better driving. It is a bit stiffer but not by much, the steering is better but still not Honda/Acura good talking about the weight. I had to put install a shift stopper to remove the sloppiness but I still prefer the Honda/Acura mechanical feeling shifters. The power and awd specially here in pacific northwest during rainy days make me appreciate it unlike those fwd even with limited slip diffs just can’t match. The rev limiter I agree with Matt, I wish it has 1-2k more as it feels so short specially in lower gears when you are trying to push it hard. GR Corolla has indeed better awd vectoring and rawness ala STI of old, but the small displacement 3 cyl engine that is pushing out that much power though it is a Toyota engine, not so sure how long that will hold up. Even the interior space (seats and trunk) in gr corolla is much tighter if you have a small family so I went with wrx. I am just enjoying this car as the last days of manual combustion engines are numbered as electrification is fast approaching

Good equipment but the price! Got 2023 Premium MT in March for $31K. Added EBC pads, DOT4 fluid, intake w/ custom tune (+75 whp and 130 ft-lb), catback, STI trans/ motor/ diff mounts, 20mm wheel spacers, tinted windows and speaker upgrades and it’s really great. And I’m getting 26 mph in mixed but mostly highway driving.

Subaru is just cashing in on bigger margins without any real R&D. The best value is the base or premium trim and do the upgrades yourself and get a better product in the aftermarket.

    • @caryg4638
      @caryg4638 7 месяцев назад +6

It's not that simple. The performance braking tests they do are one time stops. The brakes on the TR, which are bigger and more robust, don't necessarily stop better (As stopping is tire limited); they last longer after repeated stops and thermals. The suspension is sharper, which doesn't necessarily translate to lap times as it does it in making the car more predictable in hard driving. The seats are better, but that doesn't translate into lap times. The car has better steering feel. But that doesn't... Anyway, you get the point.

Great video. I had a 2001 WRX and absolutely loved the hell out of it for every second, and it didn't have any of these "advancements" you talk about here, most of which seem to make the car worse or at least no better. And the acceleration time is the same as my '01, and for way more money even adjusting for inflation. Thats nutso. Cant figure out who this car is for, considering the competition.

Fellow (former) NASIOC member here! I appreciate the honesty with this TR. So many reviewers hear Brembo brakes and Recaro seats and they fawn over them without actually testing them. Just because it says Recaro, doesn't mean it's going to be a fantastic seat for all conditions and all body types. The VB generation seems like Subaru is phoning it in, and now this TR edition seems like it is a phoned in trim level. Not impressed.

I've always told my clients (8 years selling the brand) the WRX is a better daily driver than the STI. Unless you plan on doing track days or autocrossing, the performance gains of the STI are simply wasted potential. (and a higher cost of ownership) Not to mention those of us in AZ/CA can't get 93 octane, which the STI requires to make its full hp. Maybe it's the 52-year-old in me that still says a WRX Premium or Limited is really all the car most people will ever need on the street.

Good points for sure. In Canada, the value proposition is somewhat different as well as the competition’s pricing. The best value is still in the lower trims though(base/sport here).
One thing that you could have touched on more is how it compares to the competition as a family car. Many enthusiasts(myself included) are getting older and starting families. I recently bought a 2024 WRX Sport over the GR Corolla, Elantra N, and the Civic SI because it has a larger rear passenger compartment and easier access to it. My FRS just wasn’t cutting it anymore as a dad of two, and four doors and a spacious interior were top priority.

It's great that they ditched the dunlops for the TR. Those Dunlops are absolute garbage, and I'll never understand why they're the only option for tires. They delivered my wife's WRX to Denver Colorado in the middle of winter with those trash summer tires and wanted to upcharge us $1200 to put all seasons or snow tires on. Needless to say we purchased a set of aftermarket wheels and good tires and brought them with us to pick up the car.

$45k is a ridiculous price for that car.

At this point there is no reason outside of needing awd to get a wrx over a N

  • @ajvangorden1344

If they offered the wrx power train in either the Impreza hatch, or brought the levorg body to the states with this power train, I would buy one immediately. I've owned a 2015 wrx, 2020 performance package wrx. Now I have a 2016 F150 crew cab 6.5 ft bed. 3.5 ecoboost. I love it, I work construction, haul tools around from job to job. But I miss having a fun car. However, a sedan is too small for tall items. I often had problems when I had my other wrxs. A good wagon or hatch would be enough to get slightly taller items in. I don't often carry large materials just my tools. But the Fa24 power train is a monster, far improved over the Fa20, and I love Subaru's flat 4 and symmetrical awd system. It's so great. If they would simply take the VB wrx underpinning and put it in either of those 2 chassis, I would trade my truck immediately. I want an awd hot hatch of sorts. Not really any out there for a decent price anymore.

No you wouldn’t. The Levorg is the ugliest thing on earth. You wouldn’t buy one

@19hundoc47 that's entirely subjective to the person lol they aren't too bad. And if it any way resembled the Levorg "STI" model they showed then I'd absolutely take it with this powertrain in it. As long as it's the FA24 and the 6 speed. Not the cvt

Import a Mexican wagon model, swap the vin of it with an Impreza, hide that car in a garage forever, live in a state with no inspections, never get in an accident
      .
and never ever ever sell it.
All of this is a joke, just move or wait 25 years.

OG intro let's goooooooo!! Feels like wearing a pair of worn in jeans, so good. It honestly feels like they should started the VB out with this model. Also I think they still offer the armrest extension, which feels like a mandatory purchase. Why not just make it standard after so many years? Great, honest review as always!

The Elantra N might be nice but doing a front wheel burnout every time you take off quickly with the wheels turned gets old lol

The loud startup is because theres no secondary air pump and a valve opens and connect the intake directly to the exhaust to enrich exhaust flow in O2 to help heat the cat quickers

@matt maran, quick thoughts on GRC interior and cargo space vs WRX. Stock power is low, but once u start modding the WRX it comes alive in a way the competition doesn't.

  • @jppt88

Not very fair to compare sticker price. WRX can be had $3000 or more below sticker with low interest rates. Competition he's using cannot.
