  • I found this work in 'Introduction to Polyphonic Playing', published by Könemann Music Budapest, where it was No. 4 of '4 solfeggi'. It was originally published as number 19 in Bertalotti's 'Solfeggi a canto e alto', published in 1744. In my opinion, it's one of the most expressive and poignant pieces of two-part writing that I've ever encountered!
Recorded by Peter Anthony Smith in Room 3047 at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music on the 25th of January, 2023.

Wow, what on earth is this? I completely agree with you on the expressiveness of it. It's got the obvious formal and strict expression of imitative counterpoint, but it's intensely emotional as well, like the integrated, fecund expression of the mature Bach (it sort of makes me think of the affect of the d# minor fugue from WTC1). And there's something about the way it wears it's tonality which in parts makes it sound like something which could have been written rather recently!
None of it possible without your austere yet sensitive performance (great recording quality, too). Thank you for this!

Thank you for all the kind words, I think you've put it better than I could! Something about the way the ideas are developed just feels very mature, assured, and balanced. Glad you liked it! :)
