- This is my first time watching and reaction to Amphibia 3X14 "The Root of Evil/The Core & the King." I hope you enjoy it!
SYNOPSIS
Amphibia chronicles the adventures of 13-year-old Anne Boonchuy, who is magically transported to the fantastical world of Amphibia, a rural marshland full of frog-people. There, she meets an excitable young frog named Sprig Plantar, his unpredictable sister Polly and overprotective grandpa Hop Pop.

Fun fact: The voice actor for young andrias is the same voice actor as Hunter in The Owl House Zeno Robinson and when Leaf invented the secret messages AND took the music box to earth! She’s the one who wrote secret messages on the urns in the museum!
Not only that, but Barrel’s VA is Jason
(Dipper) Ritter. And since we’ve already had Alex Hirsch and Kristen Schall, you know what that means.
Finally… after all these years… we have them all.
He's also voicing Tai in the Digimon anime reboot. God knows when that's getting released.

In Andrias's introduction episode, Lady Olivia refers to him as a "peacekeeper of a thousand years." From her perspective, I have no doubt she meant this as a compliment. But I wonder, from Andrias's perspective, if it didn't sound like she basically just said, "Yeah this is Andrias, a TOTAL WIMP who hasn't conquered ANY worlds in a thousand years, he SUCKS."

My mother and I used to watch every episode of this show together, and we loved all of them. This was the first one I had to watch without her, and I couldn't bring myself to do so until earlier this week, because then I would know she was really gone. Kind of ironic then, that this is the episode we meet Leif. I know Mom would have loved this episode, too.
As for my thoughts on it, I love all the _Midsommar_ references in "The Root of Evil" and the return of Jeremy and Gary. And "The Core and the King" is perhaps the best episode of the show, and certainly one of the most important. We see how, through pressure and manipulation from his father, Andrias became who he is. We learn what caused Andrias to order that the frogs be kept in line by the toads, and of course, we learn more about the Core and poor Marcy's fate 11/10 episode.

I love how they just straight up put Midsommar in this show as an episode. It’s just kinda hilarious to me, never thought Midsommar and Amphibia would intersect but here we are 😅
Between this and Big City Greens doing A Quiet Place, seems someone high up at Disney loves horror parodies.
This episode was fantastic. It adds more depth to Andrias as a villian and I love it.And of course we have Jason Ritter voicing Barrel.
The Gravity Falls reunion is now COMPLETE!
Others have already mentioned this, but Young Andrias is voiced by Zeno Robinson (Hunter from The Owl House) and Barrel is voiced by Jason Ritter (Dipper Pines).
Well "Darcy" was in the voice credits before this episode and the fandom spread it early on.

P.S. While the show never mentions it, you actually can find out who likely crafted the calamity box in Marcy’s journal.

I'm everyone will be thrilled about the Core and the King, but what I wanna know is you were very surprised by the return of both Gary and Jeremy the beetle Mike?

Fun fact: if you see the credits at when Marcy gets combined with the core you do see that her name is Darcy. So we didn't spoil them Theoretically xDDD
I mean the Andrias's dad did say that he will be added to the core in the episode, so even with the box gone, they still did that, and he also said that the core was Amphibia's greatest minds, as well as his ancestors
We've had the whole gravity falls cast in the show now, and hunter makes an appearance
You're getting close to the end - it's a heck of a finale that will leave you in tears of every emotion
(At 11:40) And just think… when we saw and heard that from the trailer, we thought THIS was talking to Marcy Wu.
The Root of Evil is so much fun, the Midsommar reference, bringing back Gary, and making them join the resistance, the callbacks are awesome.
But sheesh, The Core and the King is a season highlight. Andrias' character is so good, the weight of his people's downfall, trying to right his mistake, and doing whatever he needs to, even if painful. And it's just like you said, you can now see why he did what he did, where it all started, but it's still wrong, his wrongdoings have affected so many people, Marcy suffering immense damage included, and it has not left peace with him, that's just great.
Also a lot of really interesting worldbuilding. The Olms mention that a frog hadn't visited them in over a century, meaning Lief was the last frog to ever go to them. The invisible ink she and Andrias developed as well potentially means she's the one who left the messages on earth. And Andrias saying that "her and her kind need to be kept in check", as well as sending Barrel, who was a royal guard in Newtopia, to the villages probably means that Andrias was who created the social system in Amphibia where frogs are the lower class, toads end up in the same villages through the towers, and the Newts remain as the higher class, which I find really interesting.
I had been waiting for you to get to this ep for a while, loved your reaction, your face at the "why son, I think I'm almost proud of you" was priceless. Can't wait for the next chapters!!

I know most comments are going to be about 14b, but I was so excited to see you react to 14a because of hoy much you've enjoyed horror movie parodies.
Wow this is such a good episode and so sad and it makes so much sense. Those beasts that leaf rides on are the same species that wally and anne saw, and the Barrel with the hammer. and leaf being the first “Planter” and also the ancient artifact that was on earth being Leaf with the music box. Great episode great breakdown. It’s January 7th and this is part 54/?

I still really love amphibia but I REALLY wish we could maybe have sacrificed one or two episodes for another backstory episode like this. The interconnected and decades long story that starts to get revealed is actually really good. But thats just a wish, the show is still really good and theres a LOT that happens in this final arc cant wait to see what you think of them.
Core and the King kind of reminds me to Tale of the Yokai episode from TMNT 2012.

I've been waiting for the root of evil since the moment you started this reaction series! I noticed your love for horror movies in your other reaction series and knew that you'd love all the references in Amphibia, but an entire episode referencing a very modern horror movie is so cool. The moment I saw the dresses and the style of the building I was like hold up, and then it just kept going. Some messed up references include them all crying collectively, Bessy strung up like the guy that got eagled, and a guy smashing his head against a rock. Can't believe they put all that in, love matt and the crew for their love for horror and very glad to see you finally witness it!
also the core and the king is fine I guess (/j , it's amazing. And yeah barrel is voiced by Jason Ritter, the voice of dipper, and young andreas is voiced by Zeno Robinson, the voice of Hunter! )

Me Remembering the fact the Darcy name was manifested by the fandom, y'all can fight me on this.
The name darcy was actually made by the community before this actual eppisode but the directors actually used it!

I think Leif came to the human realm, left the box behind and returned to Amphibia. My reasoning here being that there was that viking vase with the box and probably Leif. Plus if Leif is Sprig's ancestor she had to have come back to found a family.

In all fairness, fans were calling her Darcy at least a week or two before the shoe used that name. Not sure if it was leaked or was just great minds being in the same gutters and all, but...

It just occurred to me: Young Andrias is a young apprentice who can't accept his guardian a terrible person, even when people he makes connections with tell him, and goes off the deep end because of it...

One aspect that I found fascinating was when Andreas tells Leaf and Barrel that he was going to invade Earth they CLAPPED for it. Invasion, capturing, and subjective treatment was fine. Leaf only cared when her world was in danger.
By Earth standpoint those three were villains and acted only in their own interests.
This is something I think about involved this show, the characters, and politics all operate on.
The characters we follow many times are just doing what is best for them vs acting for a whole based on culture they grew up in or other.
Andreas was born and raised in a different culture and even the Planters and the girls were raised in cultures that was in conflict from others (Anne and the Planters seem to destroy or affect negativity a lot wherever they go and just run to get out of trouble).
While Andreas is the villain of the show seeing what culture he was raised in and the constant eyes, voices, and propaganda controlling him I can't say if one of the three girls was in the same position they wouldn't do anything differently.
I mean. She did create plantars hunting dancing so idk... lol.
Btw Andrias' dad is voiced by William Houston who also voiced King Vendrick from Dark Souls II who was the inspiration for King Andrias.
I have a reaction suggestion because of your love of a great soundtrack and wholesomeness watch Bluey episode Sleepy time, you’ll probably cry. Sleepy time apparently has a 9.6 rating on IMDb and is said to be one of the best episodes ever on anything.

I always thought the backstory presented in this episode was so fascinating, because we have a story of three close friends who were torn apart due to tragic circumstances, who all ended up working against each other- quite literally the origin of all the division between newts, toads, and frogs in modern day Amphibia- and THEN we have our three humans, Anne, Sasha, and Marcy. Who are... also close friends who were torn apart due to tragic circumstances, and ended up working against each other at varying points in the plot. This feels so poetic to me, given that we now know our human trio is part of a prophecy set to save this world from the impacts of the same sort of mistakes they were starting to make.

It's still hard to believe the heroes gave a second chance to this zombifying mushroom but didn't spare Barry the candymaker who had done a little evil before!
As for the second part - it's hilarious to see that the dreaded Core is just Marcy playing the evil overlord. And now we know why Andrias was so bitter to Marcy and the whole idea of friendship. Yes his father was there... for the whole time!

So sad I missed the live. These two episodes were…wow😮. I wonder what happened to Leif after that but, what a girl. Andreas had a lot of pressure, but he should have stand to his father. I’m very curious about all this story will end. But one thing is sure, this is gonna be epic

"Leaf is a Hero" of course... a frog that was part of the Invasions alonside Andrias and Barrel and was totally ok with keeping innocent creatures like the Moss-men imprisoned.... is obviously a Hero.
im just saying.... Andrias and his father Aldrich might the ones leading the invasions... but that doesn't mean that leaf and Barrel are innocent.
You aren’t wrong. But there have been countless of stories where the hero has done something wrong, or is ignorant to the fact what they are doing is terrible, and redeems themselves. Yes that is part of their past, and shouldn’t be forgotten, but the fact that she risked everything to right it all and change should be acknowledged. Again I agree with your statement, but imagine if she just ignored what she saw when she touched the music box. This show is built on character redemptions. That’s just where I am on it, but of course everyone’s entitled to their opinions on these things, and that’s why shows like this are great. Sparks good discussions and debates

it's just that i personally wouldn't call Leaf a "Hero" when she decided to stop all this madness when she saw her own world being the one destroyed, and not because invading other worlds in itself it's bad. It's understandable that she wouldn't want her home doomed of course.... But the foundation of her sudden empathy and concern wasn't exactly the best one in my opinion.
I can't help but think of many conquering nations throughout history like England, Spain, and ancient Rome, rationalizing the destruction of other civilizations because they have a "God Given" destiny to destroy and conquer to keep up the status quo. Amphibia as a civilization is completely believable. It is all really great storytelling.

I not gona said Leif do the right thing you talk about trust Andrias trust leif but he can't just cut power source of his civilization and let his citizen in Shambles is Leif who don't trust Andrias and don't trust there friendship instead of find what problem together like she said she desire to lie and steal behind his black no she not in the right she only make Andrias belive his father right more and make him fix in that direction to the end
That’s totally valid as well. But again, ultimately I find her in the right, and Andrias could have trusted her. So it goes both ways. But it’s totally ok to disagree. We’re all not going to see eye to eye on these things, and that’s what’s great about shows like this. And I’m sorry if I misinterpreted what you typed. Leif should have not betrayed her friends and stole the music box I do not care what her reasons were betrayal is betrayal no matter how you twist it she really hurt Andrias the person she clamed to be her dearest friend
