Friedrich Wilhelm Rust (1739, Wörlitz/Dessau - 1796, Dessau); German violinist and composer. Student of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Franz Benda. He also studied with Giuseppe Tartini in Italy. From 1775 he was the successor to Johann Friedrich Fasch as court music director and theater director in Dessau. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was in Wörlitz in 1776, was so impressed by him that he had most of his works set to music by him. His technically demanding violin and piano works (including six sonatas) can already be classified as classical.
