I have seen catchers hit unintentionally many times. Never have I seen a "message" sent by hitting the batter on the next pitch. It was a no-class act by Mikolas. They didn't show Happ and Contreras hugging each other as Contreras left the game.
What a game!! I watched it from beginning to end. I am all for the umps ejecting pitchers who hit a batter intentionally. Mikolas won't admit directly that it was intentional, but he has admitted it by saying he'll always have his catcher's back! Way to go Ian and Cubs bullpen for taking the high road by not reacting with hostility!! 💙 Steele was the man! No pitcher since Maddox in 2004 has a 4-0 record against the Cardinals! I think tonight's game will be interesting. I bet Mikolas will pitch again before this series is over. Love you, Cubbies! 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
You dont get 2 tries to hit someone. If you're gunna hit me. Hit me. The message was sent after the miss. The announcers said it. It's the right call to throw him out.
I'd expect Mikolas gets a suspension of some kind. There's no excuse for what he did and it was clear as day that it was intentional. The league needs to send a message on this on imo. There is absolutely no reason to hit someone after accidently getting the catcher with your bat. I say should be 5 games so he misses an entire start. Also I need to mention how awful the Cardinal's announcers were, acting all surprised that he was thrown out. Man have some class.
Morel isn’t hitting mammoth shots currently, but it’s even better that he’s not K’ing as much and getting laser beams to score runs. Bellinger needs to just be extended if he’s willing to play 1B since PCA is the “future” CF and wow what a defensive performance!
I was at this game. Heat was horrible. But game was nice. Busch Stadium is my favorite. But even though I'm a cubs fan, I agree Mikolas should have got a warning. You could tell that Dakota Hudson was not ready. But over all, this was my favorite cubs game out of the 11 I've gone to in the past 2 years. I love this stadium. The cubs also had beautiful defense. But their defense in the 8th was not.
Even the Cardinal's announcers said that Mikalos' first pitch to the face that missed was a warning. You don't get two warnings. If you're going to hit me, hit me and stay on. If you give me a warning and then hit me, that's an ejection. You don't get two.
had they of just "Buzzed the Tower" as they said, and that was it? Warnings might have been issued and the Pitcher would have stayed in the game. Buzz the tower AND THEN immediately nail him in the hip? Umps did their job there and they had every right to since it was clearly intentional. Even Wilson knew the backswing was an accident, but the Pitcher simply didn't care, and because of that, early night for him and the Cubs took advantage.
I'm sorry, but the "unwritten" rules of baseball are DUMB. Happ played years with Wilson, those guys like each other. He's not trying to do anything there. Pure accident. So why do you all the sudden have license to hit him? Mikolas got exactly what he deserved. Acknowledge the accident, and let your pitching back up your catcher. Instead you're sitting in the locker room watching your team get annihilated.
Seriously? It's something that happens a lot. Even Willson said that he's been hit by several backswings. I don't think backswings can be controlled when you see how hard the player swings! It's momentum.

I wish ESPN will shut up about trying to force Cubs players in their stupid discussions to be traded.
The Cubs aren’t done!

The Cubs didn't need to react. It was self destruction.
@@timothystevenhoward Exactly! They chirped a little bit when Ian was hit but they didn't clear the benches like some teams do! Cubs were Classy!

Believe me….STL fan boy mentality in general lacks any kind of class when it’s not about their sport teams….👎🏾
The announcer was right tho, worst half inning of baseball ever played by a single team.
Awesome. Keep on winning and us all proud! 😊😊😊
5:30 literally took my breath away. just wow

Great job cubs

Cubs offense lighting up so much lately they didn't even bother to show the 10th run they scored

CowaBunga...CUBS....=))
Peace!

Mikolas has been sent down to the peewee league. 😅
Sad William😢
Happ should have been ejected for not controlling his bat and inuring Wilson C. Happ should know better...and, yes, I'm a Cubs fan.
