3rd year PhD student here, gotta put in a word for exercise. If you aren't working out or doing a sport or getting outside to hike or doing SOMETHING to stay active, your mental health will slowly but surely decline along with your fitness. A healthy mind needs a healthy body.
Thank you for the inspiring session Lucy , I am a second year PhD student at PkU- China , although my major is comparative literature and world literature, so far from yours ,but I still can find so Many emotions and sufferings in common between us, yeah , I used to suffer a lot specially during my first year , being the first and the only international student in my major made me struggle a lot , but now think we should enjoy our lives , PhD is more like a life style , is to improve ourselves to be better humans , I don’t think suffering is something that we choose , but it’s something that we can control, it’s a normal feeling as long as we need everything to get done in a high level academic way , there are so many different reason for that in life as well , we just need to learn how to deal with it ! Your Chanel is really good way to make PhD life less stressful :)) ( I am Reem , an Egyptian PhD student in china )
I don’t think we have to suffer during our PhD, it’s a part of our life, just like other parts. To destress i usually take short trips, explore new places / i draw and paint or take photographs. Good luck Lucy, i just discovered your channel and love it already. (Urban planning PhD student from Algeria)
I agree with everything you said. I have not suffered in my PhD. I am doing what I love, even though I don't "enjoy" every aspect of the journey. I wouldn't trade what I do for something less difficult because I love my field and subfield. There are nasty people in every profession, academia is no different. But there are great people too who lift you up and offer you support.
Hey lucy, I will also complete 4 years of PhD in July this year. As I am towards the end of my PhD, I really want you to make a video on how to find a Postdoc and general questions related to Postdoc application.. Please make such video.. Great content by the way. Keep it up. Love from India.
When the stress in a "normal" level, like any other hard activity, is part of the deal. In such cases just stopping, writting what I am felling, my doubts and fears have been useful to clarify whats going on (terapy also helps.). But when it becomes so aversive, almost unbearable, or when your supervisor is just being an asshole you need to rethink all of this. Sometimes the problem is not you.
Well I just agree with you. There's no need to be suffering during your PhD life. It just one part of your work. hehe... btw, it is nice if you can enjoy and keep exciting in your PhD study. (I'm a PhD student from Indonesia)
Yeah, if anything "suffering" is actually hurting your research. Does anyone perform well when they're suffering? No. If it's that bad, they need to rethink the way it's done because that's helping no one and probably burning out a lot of really smart people who could have otherwise contributed to the world if they weren't busy "suffering" for arbitrary reasons. The actual work is probably a small fraction of why students are stressed. I imagine a lot of it has to do with the politics.
Well the word suffering can be interpreted in different ways.. There's this enjoyable suffering where you know that you have been consuming most of your brain cells just to get something at the end of the day from your research, but enjoying that because you know what is waiting for you at the end of this long journey! and i believe once a person takes this path, he should be determined to reach the end, and that determination would be bigger than the suffering and one might as well enjoy that 3-4 year ride!
If they think we should suffer in our PhD they are absolutely morons who cannot bear others peace of mind.. PhD is a challenging journey in itself and if we love doing research we automatically feel overwhelmed and stressed but others (especially supervisors ) expectations of ours attitude towards it makes it miserable one .. PhD must be challenging we shouldn't feel miserable about it ...It's just a part of life experience

yeah science phd are pretty tough like a 9/5 job just contributing to your supervisors reputation
I don't think anyone can get away with working 9-5 on a science PhD.
