  • Here is a great way to start seeds for the spring. Using milk jugs and some potting mix the process is easy and requires very little work. We have a tip on where to get the milk jugs for free.

I love the winter sowing method. I've been doing it successfully for years and it's a great, easy way to grow plants for your yard or to sell as part of your plant nursery. My backyard nursery is filled with "free" plants that I winter sowed using perennial seeds that I gathered myself. Happy gardening! 😊

I’m trying for the first time this year. Larkspur, poppies, columbine, lavender, yarrow and a couple others. I’m excited to see how it works!

Perhaps you could have told us what plants could be sown in these during the winter ?

Great question. We plant primarily Annuals this way. Partial list, Sweat William, Feverfew, Red Salvia, Purple Salvia, Gomphrena, Nasturtium, Marigolds, and Cleome. These are all plants you could plant in the spring but this way they get started earlier in their little mini greenhouses. Thanks for watching!

Hi! Great video! I, too, am planning on doing something like this for my retirement - coming faster than I thought - I am in zone 3b - Northern MN - any tips as to how to go about this up here??? I do have a greenhouse that is going up this spring (if it ever gets here - just got about 13" of SNOW!!!) 🙄It gets super cold until the end of May - early June. I now start all of my veggie seeds indoors but want to branch out into trees/perennials/shrubs. Always looking for expert advice! Thanks! BTW - love your website, just found you today and thanks for all the info!

Hi Dawn, Glad you like our content. More videos coming soon.
Having a green house is great for plant starts, seeds, vegetable plants. Not really needed for woodier shrubs and trees as long as they are hardy for your 3b zone.
We use the clear totes with great success. Keeps the harsh winds and the snow off our cuttings while they root. Snow can knock things over and the wind can really dry things out. Just use a tote with lots of room and we do recommend the side holes at the soil level to keep the mold and bacteria from growing.
In another few weeks we will post another propagating in totes update. Some are already rooting and beginning to bud out.
      Thanks, enjoy 🌲🌲🌲
