      You might have heard the survival rate (they said it in the video) while they were there?
      It gets much worse if there isn't someone there full time to tend them for the first 4-5 years (unless they are planted near a water source).

    Have you considered building swales too? To actually retain the water by keeping it on the spot and make it sink into the ground to refill the groundwater? Sure, trees will eventually help to do that, but in such a dry landscape you should really combine your tree planting with building swales as that would multiply the effect of your good works.

    • @j97drews
      @j97drews Год назад

      they do the swales where they plant the almond trees so they are still on one line. the wild tree species are more randomly dispersed and they catch water by being planted inside of a hole in the form of a "mini-swale" kinda. with a mound on the steep side

    Thank Y'all for having Murcey for Mother Gaia. As likely many here have heard, non-$ellout scientists have said we have but a decade to plant 1.2 trillion trees so to avert climate chaos. It's known forests stabilize climate. Forests are known to be key to nature's hydrology, which is how forests create fresh water in abundance all the way inland. Reforest coasts & river riparian zones would capture & sequester carbon from slipping into the ocean where it has a devastating acidifying effect. This basically restores nature's carbon sink the oceans were never meant to become. Great gratitude will pour from posterity, if we can forge a future for generations to come.

    Whilst it would seem an alien concept to most almond orchard owners, if they inter-planted the almonds with other tree species, possibly a mix of fruit/nut bearing trees & nitrogen & or potassium soil fixing trees & introduced a mixed ground cover, their production rates should increase dramatically, erosion & water usage should do the exact opposite accordingly. A food forest effectively. As things stand, those almond orchards are basically desert landscapes.

    • @maxschon7709

      The almond boom kills wide ecosystems and make it into wasteland just for getting an almond milk for life style. There are so many vegans don't thinking on the fact that they help to distroy our planet with that almond milk while the could use alternativev like hemp milk or rice milk.

      The urban vegan diet is the main factor on the almond boom since 2000. I am sorry if you dislike facts. However ignoring it would be like to ignore the bad impact of cattle farming on the climate. Almond, palm oil and avocados are cash crops distorying huge parts of infield.

Every farmer I know is happy to do this kind of work on their land because the farms have belonged to their family for generations in many cases and they want the land to be healthy for their children. The key is one when you engage with them acknowledge their expertise and show them respect. Then show them how this makes their farm more profitable in the long run and how it can lower their costs for inputs. I know farmers that spend $500,000 last year on fertilizer. They are listening but you have to show them it is scalable. It's not easy but when they implement they do it on a scale so much larger it's incredible.

    Planting trees sounds like a great idea, but the reality is far more complex. Was this ecosystem here previously? If not, then will the new one they are creating ultimately die out? Have the local almond plantation stolen all the water from this area? These people clearly have good intentions, but the road to hell was paved with good intentions. I should know, as I have walked down it on many an occasion. As Kermit would say, it is not easy been green.

    Sadly Spain fucked up. It's not devoid of trees because dry and desert like, it's dry and desert like because they destroyed the trees. Overgrazing and removing forests for farming have led to this. It'"s true for most countries on Earth, but when you're in a Mediterranean climate, it doesn't regenerate quickly if you screw up. Greece, Italy, Southern France are all in the same boat. They destroyed their forests for grazing; and now their forests will take centuries to grow back. It leads to droughts, landslides, further destruction of the soils, and ultimately desertification. Spain looks like Arizona in so many places, which is why it was used to film westerns. But before the middle ages, it was all forests and rivers.

    Why are you planting in summer? This is guaranteed failure... You have to plant in fall or spring when there is moisture in the ground and the tree can establish a root system...

      Tree planting is not a competition. If you plant 3000 a day good for you and the place you are planting.
