i'd like to throw it out there that this game did not originally come with controller overlays and the one you see on screen is fan made. this is a truly obscure game and it's excellent to see someone cover it.
If you group all of the enemies together and are able to kick a food ball their way and smash them, you can rack up lots of bonus points. This is similar to getting a bunch of enemies to hop on a burger piece and dropping them in the original.
So many quarters thrown into this machine. I love the original game. Still do. I never heard of a "sequel" nor even seen the box for this. This looks amazing!
After my Odyssey 2, for Christmas one year, I received the Intellivision II, and it came with Burgertime. Even though the console was starting to show its age, I do remember getting a copy of Diner from the Kay-Bee Toys discounted games bin that they kept in the front of the store. Along with Diner, I picked up Buzz Bombers, and a few others. If I remember correctly, the games were around $5.00 apiece.
There was also _another_ BT sequel in the works at Mattel called Pizza Time. This was being worked on at the French office (Nice Ideas). The prototype was lost, and this is main reason the repurposed the Masters code was used for Diner.
I feel so deprived, LOVED Burgertime as a kid, but never played Diner. Thank you for the vid on this one!!!! Seems like timing to run around the Bad Foodies is crucial.
"Video game preservation efforts are so crucial" Exactly. So many companies discard their old games, but often will fight to prevent fans from preserving them, and are only willing to release them when they think they can make a big profit off of them. It's too bad there weren't movie and TV show preservation efforts in their early days. Too many movies and TV shows have been lost, like tears in the rain. There is nothing beyond the "Atari bubble"...
I remember seeing ads for Diner in Electronic Games. I think they had planned a 1984 release for this game but then The Great Video Game Shake-Up occurred and Mattel exited the video game industry. The Blue Sky Rangers or INTV Corp. then released Diner in 1987.
I have a copy of that Diner game, complete in a bit of a banged up box. BurgerTime was my favourite game on Intellivision and I was so upset when our console died. I wish I had more Intellivision games but they're difficult to find where I live anymore.
You would’ve had to have been in the Intellivision bubble in 1987 to have even known about this. People complain about Tramiel’s Atari Corp and their alleged lack of marketing. Intv Corp said “hold my beer!” Toys R Us might’ve briefly carried the game since they did carry Intv’s Intellivision 3 in the corner for awhile. But probably most sales went to the existing console owners on record via mail order. Intv apparently made a couple of games for the NES but not sure if they ever got around to planning Diner for the NES or licensing their derivative IP back to Data East for them to take the stab instead.
A Burger Time sequel on a mostly dead console in 1987 during full blown Nintendo Mania is wild enough, the fact that it started life as a Masters of the Universe game sounds like this was made in Mad Libs lol
I'm so glad you discovered this game and are excited about it today. My family were on INTV's mailing list, and we got catalogs in the mail about twice every year. I remember the issue with Dig Dug and Diner in it, featuring a young lady on roller skates, holding a silver platter in her hand. The Bad Bananas I used to call Mac Tonight, because they bore a resemblance, despite their color. I think my best score is about half a million. My one minor point of correction is about the "sketchy" collision detection. Yeah, despite the isometric appearance, it's just a standard hitbox as if it was 2D. It's possible to walk around the enemies in the same lane, though not probable. If you make it to Level 15, you'll probably have to master that.
If you wanna get technical, the actual "official" sequel from Data East was Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory, a not very good game that was released in 1984.
@GenXGrownUp I commented halfway into the video, then you said it and then I was like "Well, I'm an idiot" 🤣 But to be fair, you said Peter Pepper's Ice Cream PARLOR, not FACTORY 🤣🤣🤣

It doesn't seem to take "depth" into account when doing collision detection but rather just plain "hit boxes". Anyway, I swear I have seen this game before but not BurgerTime related and not on Intellivision! It was faux 3D just like this, had the object of pushing balls of some kind down to the lower levels and killing enemies with them, but I'll be darned if I can remember what it was!
