I was fluent in Bisaya until I started elementary school in the U.S. in 1994 (when school counselors told my parents I needed to speak English more), and now all I can do is understand basic Bisaya. I don't even know modern Bisaya slang or terms because my knowledge of the language was cut off in the mid 90s. Kudos to dude.

Either your parents felt pressured to speak English at home to guarantee your assimilation (with misguided hopes of a more successful future in the U.S.) or teachers and school counselors will tell them that they need to speak English more and possibly enroll you in an ESL ("English as a second language") class.
He actually spent a considerable number of years in Camiguin Island and studied there. Their house is at Barangay Anito, Mambajao Camiguin. His dad is a retired US Marine and his Mom, Diane, is a nurse. They are the manager of one of the schools in the province that teaches poor deaf children, Family2Family.
Is that the fact? Wow. My admiration of Paul has just gone two levels up. Very rarely you see American kids thrive in rural areas, and for him to master the language without skipping a beat, man that's a whole lot of amazing. I was in Bangkok when I saw this video for the very first time in 2011 (I think). I'm home now in Manila and Paul never ceases to amaze me. Incidentally, I heard that Tim Tebow (the famous football athlete) spent time in Gen San but I never heard him speak the local language, but maybe his parents do.
This is like my 10th+++ time since 2010 watching and listening to this amazing man Paul speak Bisaya. I'm Filipino but I never could learn to speak Bisaya especially with an authentic accent like his. Yep, this video never gets tired lolssss

I know 'coz I've worked closely with a few of them that hail from Cebu City and they all speak with exagg accents. But my friend from Mandaue and another from Bohol sound closer to Gunny Sgt Paul when they speak.

Hey! I too was born in the U.S. with both parents from Bohol. I'm better at understanding Bisaya than speaking. My Bisaya has a bad accent and grammar to it so I don't speak it as much unless I really have to.

"Mutual intelligibility is the relationship between a language and dialects whereby speakers of different but related language varieties are able to understand each other. For instance, English speakers can easily understand each other even if they are using different dialects. If two people cannot understand each other then they are likely speaking different languages. " So if Cebuano/Binisaya is a dialect why can't tagalog understand Cebuano? Cebuano was technically the first official language of the Philippines since Cebu was the initial Capital of the Philippines. The only reason tagalogs refers to it as a dialect is to express superiority. LOL.

This is my 5th time to watch this and he still drives me nuts hahahaha. His Cebuano intonation and accent is so perfect you couldn't tell he's a white American guy coz that's how my former Bisaya colleagues would talk when I hear them chatting casually. The only difference being that he pronounces the words clearer unlike the native speakers like the one speaking and laughing in the background. great thing about us, filipinos, is that we are simply happy for someone who isn't a native that can speak, fluent or not, our language. when a filipino laughs at someone who has an accent, it doesn't mean he/she is looking down at someone for trying to talk. it means we're just simply happy. only then we get sad if a filipino doesn't know how to speak his/her own native language. unlike in other countries, where the filipino accent is being looked down when we speak english. we filipinos don't do that. pero grabe jud ning tawhana mag binisaya. 👍👍

great thing about us, filipinos, is that we are simply happy for someone who isn't a native that can speak, fluent or not, our language. when a filipino laughs at someone who has an accent, it doesn't mean he/she is looking down at someone for trying to talk. it means we're just simply happy. only then we get sad if a filipino doesn't know how to speak his/her own native language.
unlike in other countries, where the filipino accent is being looked down when we speak english. we filipinos don't do that.
