- The FAA is investigating a second low altitude alert incident aboard a Southwest jet after a flight came within 525 ft. of the ground while landing in Oklahoma.
What happened to the IFR approach to that airport? Pilots know 3-10 miles out if they are on the correct approach to land! This is speed, altitude, rate of decent! What happened?😮
It was only in English.
@@Plutogalaxy Even on visual approach you have a commercial pilot's
license, you have to know how to fly that aircraft without instruments!
@@PlutogalaxyThey were supposed to be using the STAR system.
@@Plutogalaxy And what makes you say that?
@@Plutogalaxy Well, first you have to get your private pilot's license, then instruments rated, then multiple engines rating, and then maybe a commercial pilot's license. Commercial pilot's are supposed to use the STAR system so that the altitude, speed, and decent rate not only allow them to land the aircraft, but make sure they don't interfere with other aircraft. If you are flying a plane with a glass cockpit, you have at least two redundant busses. If they both should fail you are back to the old days of " stick and rudder " and many pilot's have had to land thier aircraft that way.
You might want to check out the FAA accident reports. A recent one had a pilot landing with no instruments been the two busses were dependent upon a single electrical wire. Landing a large aircraft is difficult as it is and in the dark even more so when visual ques are limited. So these pilots were able to land the aircraft safely. Great job there.
Southwest learned people eat less packs of peanuts when they look out the window and see they are about to hit ground objects.
No more peanuts on planes chingon
Although your joke just flew over my head sorry hahaha
Ban peanuts 🥜

I really think that was the pilots fault than the airliner.
That pilot was just trying to keep that 737 as close to the ground as possible in case it started "destructively rearranging" itself mid-air.
Maybe it's a woke pilot and he's worried about Ukrainian patriot missiles or FPV drones?
Makes you wonder doesn’t it…I’m taking a long break from flying. They’re literally trying to off you anyway they can. Another go woke go broke or outright bankrupt!!
How do airplane pilots know what height they are flying? Altimeter. What factors give rise to flying at a low altitude? One factor may be a malfunctioning altimeter.
That is what I suspect, but you would think the auto pilot would use a different altimeter for redundancy.
@@truracer20the altimeter has instruments on the nose of the plane to measure air pressure, thus giving an altitude reading. These instruments can become blocked or outright damaged if mishandled during maintenance. (As one possible explanation for bad altimeters)
Or pilots doing something called LANDING. landing you have to get low so you don’t overshoot bro. People are stupid sometimes
It was more than any altimeter failure. The pilots would have gotten a warning if that happened. Also, they are following a monitored approach so they have check points all the way to the airport threshold. For autopilot failure the same is true. And to be ridiculously stupid, look out the window! You can see the difference between 3000 ft and 500ft. Now, failure of instruments, Autopilot, and visual seems like no one was in the cockpit or at least not paying attention to the approach.
If you're a good pilot you can know if you're less the 500 ft off the ground
You couldn't get me on one of those flying death traps with a 4 man working crew!!
Why
Same here. No vacation is worth a horrifying death
@@brandonn4548 at least it's a quick death... also the odds of death in an airplane are excruciatingly low due to a thousand different systems in place to prevent it from happening.
@@johngarrhet2235 yet it still happens. And falling 30000ft isn't exactly a quick death. No made up statistics will change my mind. I'll be in control of my own death
I used to fly Southwest a lot in the 90s and early 2000s. At that time, the CEO of SW was regarded as a true genuis of the industry type. He is long gone. I don't know if these issues are from simply trying to be too frugal and obtain too many miles from these aircraft or maintenance or what ?
I've never had issues on SW and the usual 300 to 400 dollars I'd save on a ticket for a 2 hour flight was paramount when I was in college. I hope they re find their footing because a low priced carrier ( with proper functioning aircraft and with proper crew) has definite demand from people like myself.
There was a 737 over my complex as the solar eclipse occurred in Austin. He was dangerously low.

Never listen to people giving opinions about aviation events that are not experienced pilots, never.
Ah, if you don't have thousands of hours at the helm you cant' say a close call with the ground is a bad thing?
Yes. It's called the Dunning-Kruger Effect, and you make sure it is always on display. @@rogerrussell9544
Love how media calls the low alt alert “frightening” lmao!
@@mmayes9466 For anyone in the plane it would be frightening.
@@rogerrussell9544 they would never know it happened. How could the be frightened?
I think people might be shocked to find out how few hours in the air pilots have to have in order to get put in the cockpits of airliners these days. One out of 9 of them are still in their 20s, and you can imagine how little experience it's possible to build up at such a young age.
Cheaper flights is what everyone is worried about...
It’s clear that you’re not a pilot. The minimum hours to get a job flying for the commercial passenger airlines is 1,500! That’s the minimum. The bigger named airlines like Southwest, American, Delta, etc. do not accept the minimum flight hours. Pilots get a lot of these hours by becoming and working first as CFIIs Certified Flight Instructors. Then, once an airliner hires a pilot, there is count;rss more hours training in the type plane they will be flying, both actual as well as in simulators. Once the pilot is finally passed all of this, he will become a first officer where he/she will spend sometimes a decade in the right seat gaining even more experience and mentoring from the Captain. The left seat or Captains position will not be achieved until they have as much as 10,000 hours. Trust me, this is definitely NOT an issue of the pilots lack of training and it’s irresponsible to assume so whenever you know nothing that you’re talking about. You have no idea what you’re saying. You can learn to fly a plane solo in 20 hours and become a licensed pilot in only 40 hours but you think that the minimum of 1,500 hours to fly passengers for an airliner or 10,000 hours to Captain that passenger airliner deems them as incapable? You’re a fool! Open a book! Know something before you assume something. You make yourself look incredibly ignorant.

I heard most of Southwest Pilots are retired Air Force that's the only Airline I will fly on... what's going on lately 😢@@meme-md9yy
meme... Whaaaaaaattt??
From a former airline pilot -
I suspect that guys were flying a visual approach, without backing it up with an instrument approach.
Visual cues at night can be odd, even for an experienced pilot.
Once as an instructor evaluating another instructor's student,
...I had a licensed pilot line me up to land at night .....on a mall parking lot.
As a new airline pilot many moons ago, I sure screwed up my first visual approach into LGA.
Despite being a beautiful sunny day :)
There's a learning curve.
Instrument approaches are actually easier to fly, at least at one's start flying a jet.
Regardless of the cause, it was a situational awareness failure.
Looking forward to the final report.
A rule of thumb -
For every 3 miles out from a field, one should add 1000 feet.
Ex - one should be at 3000 above ground level, about 9 miles from touchdown.
They were about 9 miles out,
and therefore should have been at 3000 feet, plus add 1000 for the airport's elevation = 4000 indicated MSL altitude.
I'm sure SW has listened to the cockpit voice recorder
..to ensure the sterile cockpit rule was followed under 10K feet.
If not, these guys are in deep doo-doo.
If the FO is still probation flying, meaning not yet under union protection,
..and the error is found to be on him, he's toast.

I guess the pilots aren't monitoring the automation. They are just along for the ride. This is what is happening in the self driving cars and the cars with all of the assist crap like blind spot warnings, proximity sensors, and such. People put blind trust in this stuff instead of using them as an aid. Anything that is automation people will trust more than the Lord.

So some guys fly an airplane too low and immediately the commentators loop Boeing into the discussion. Didn't bother to investigate what type of landing approach they were flying, what instruments they were using (or Visual Flight Rules), what the weather was, whether there were pilot reports, how far from the airport, and all the other facts that make good reporting. Just blame it on Boeing... what junior reporting.
I'd take your comment more seriously if this was the only time it happened. Forgot about the Southwest flight in Hawaii?

Here in Las Vegas, the implimention of the FAA's "Next Gen" system has caused a few problems. Most recently during last fall's F-1 race, the billionaires and their corporate jets flying into VGT, the secondary airport here in Las Vegas,; the jets were coming in very, very low about 9 miles away from landing. The planes were also about five minutes apart all day, every day leading up to the race week and on the exit. Unusual flight patterns and the frequency seemed a bit much. But then again, the billionaire who fly/out are accommodated at the expense of everyone else.
You're clueless about ATC.
@@ITAC2 Really? How interesting is that. I question your judgement.
@@ITAC2wrong! He is clueless period!
Sorry, as a pilot, I don't follow.
5 mins is plenty of spacing, and very safe.
The approach in 12L for example is very standard -
One starts descending from about 4000 feet above ground level, about 12 miles out.
That said, I do understand if one isn't happy due to more traffic or noise due to an area event
...like the Superbowl, a F-1 race, etc.
@@MarcPagan I did not say that it was unsafe but fast, low and very unusual for the neighborhood that thankfully, I no longer live in. VGT historically has been a dangerous airport. The number of planes for that event is what caused the dramatic increase in traffic. The low altitude that far from VGT was also of concern and once Next Gen was initiated, everything changed for the worse. . I should say, I know nothing about aviation. Just flew heavy airlift in the USAF for 20 years. ....

I’m pretty sure it’s a software issue
Probably instrument failure of some type since it was two similar mishaps - Boeing plan😢

I refuse to fly southwest!
No more flying for me except Airbus
The minimum altidue they have to fly is 500 feet and at NO TIME did the aircraft go below that 500 ft line. There is nothing to investigate.
Um, didn't the report state that the aircraft's low altitude warning system was activated? Wouldn't this mean that the plane was not on its flight path and could possibly hit another aircraft? So yeah, Southwest and the FAA is going to need to know what happened. So many experts with their expert opinions. Sheesh!
you may be technically correct... but NOT 9 miles from the runway or the glide slope... they usually come in at 2,000- 3,000 feet... either there was a malfunction of the instrumentation or they weren't paying attention... IF something had happened that far out, they may not have had enough altitude to make the airport... and at 500 ft, if they got caught in a downdraft or windshear that would have been all over... but thank you for your technical expertise... 😉
Your mistaken. This plane was 9 miles from the airport. They should have been 2000-3000 feet altitude at that distance from the airport.
What is even weirder.. is that this is a deviation from autopilot or a normalized approach. That is the real question. What were the pilots doing to deviate so far from the approach plan.. its just odd.
@@t.c.2776 You may be right. Its hard to tell. However, I can tell you that there was probably not a windshear. Those are pretty detectable and are usually associated with weather, which I didnt see.
But like you said, thats why there is an investigation.
Either way, 525 feet is pretty low. Not crazy low.. but I would say very unusual.
Ah, you don’t know your regs too well. 500 ft is only in sparsely populated areas. Otherwise it’s 1000 with the minimum recommended for jets being 1500.

boeing again? WTF All of these aircraft that are having problems are theirs. I don't hear about other companies and safety issue incidents happening with other companies. Did boeing hire people who checked all the esg score boxes or people who could do the job properly and safely. There are NO substitutions for safety first foremost and always when it comes to these professions. Millions of lives are at stake every single day with travelers trusting these people to have done the job professionally, accurately, correctly with the knowledge that the worker realizes he/she screws up it could cost however many lives are on that plane at that time and should be charged with murder in the first and the manufacturer also held responsible.
