Great video did whole repair about 2 hours keep everything organized and work slow I’m not even a mechanic and job was completed if I can do it you can do it trust me good luck everyone
@hizkie8238 I know I'm too late, but maybe it will help someone. Service manual says to remove exhaust manifold, but you dont have to. I got a 1/4" flex head ratchet with a short 10mm in from under the car. There isn't much room to turn it out by ratchet, I had to put the socket on and use my hand. I also have the fender cover and oil pan off, so that might have helped me. Good luck!
@@alhavana9426 Look up OTC 6616 - it’s a full circle instead of a half-circle design. Makes it harder (but not impossible) to drop bolts inside the timing cover.
Awesome job explaining all the steps. Never done this before and got the job done thanks to you. I will add I did drop a bolt in the crank and thankfully was able to get out fishing blind with a magnetic. Thanks again for the video.
Generally I am not afraid to tackle a repair unless we get into pulling engines or something. Also, I am not a pro, I am a mechanic out of necessity! My son has a 2010 Cobalt and it appears that the water pump has failed. I have spent a lot of time researching the replacement of the the pump and to be honest it has me a little frightened. To this point, your two-part video is calming my fears. Thank you for taking the time to explain the details and especially the magnet to bolt tip. If anyone is going to drop a bolt into a timing casing, it's going to be me! So Thank You for that, I am ordering the magnet tool in the link right now!!!
What have I learned from this well done video? That there's no way my arthritic hands, fingers and wrists are gonna make it. It will be sent to someone like you, Sir! Thank you.
Took me 2 days to complete this job because I dropped a bolt in the timing cover. Took the oil pan off wasn't in there so finished taking out the water pump where I was able to fish it out with a magnet. I consider myself mechanically inclined but this is by far the hardest job I've ever done and ive replaced whole engines and transmissions. If anyone on here is thinking about buying a Malibu or equinox with the 2.4 don't do it and if you do take it to someone else to be serviced. They'll hate it too but it will save you the headache.

I watched all the way to the end. Couldn't resist my morbid curiosity to view a truly nightmarish water pump repair. The lack of access & limited visibility makes that repair a royal pain. Thanks for sharing the experience.
The beauty of this video is that any of the unknowns or hidden things that could trip you up are blown wide open. If you understand the concept and know what you'll need and what to do- it's not a big deal anymore.
Hey Brian, when I do these I take a 6x1.0 bolt and cut the head off of it and thread it into the drive pulley on the pump, that way I have a stud to line it up with the gear.. then you don't have to fight it trying to line up the bolt holes from the gear to the pump. Also, instead of trying to use a magnet held against your socket take a tiny piece of paper and set it in the side of your socket and push the bolt in, the paper will cause a tight enough fit to hold your bolt in the socket and then you can thread the bolts in that way. Hope that helps.
Just got into one on an equinox tonight after watching this video. One big set back that I came across that you dont have to worry about is the engine block heater goes directly behind the water pump! And its really in the way! Also seems to be alot less room around the 2.4 in the equinox. So far not a bad job if i can avoid pulling the exhaust manifold. Thanks for the tips. Sure makes it a hell of alot easier!
FYI - The best way to line things up when reinstalling is to install an M6 threaded rod (about 50mm) into one of the screw holes. Helpful when installing those things blind when you have the full circle holding tool.
Ryan, I'm about to change water pump and thermostat on my 06 pontiac solstice 2.4L manual (fhe 2.4 is the non turbo base model but my car has a Hahns Turbo and Intercooler, with custom tune, and obviously original air box and air filter removed and replaced with an open conical filter attached to a long tube running from the intake obviously, and sits dead center over the fan shroud/between the turbo charge pipes. Not sure why I just told you that as it has nothing to do with my reason for commenting LOL My question to you is could you explain this rod method you stated? Thank you
Love the scrapyard moment at the end, worked at a yard for a while and it was full of fun times like that. I have seen pickups break in half from rust, the other yard worker took the fork and ripped the cab off the frame since it was all scrap so we could get to the engine
Got it done!!!! ✅ THANK YOU for both your videos! This saved us from the stress and spending money for the water pump replacement job. I did end up with a whine at the end BUT, I’m sure it’s because I tightened the water pump sprocket bolts too tight. Going to SLIGHTLY loosen them. Wish me luck!

Great video parts 1 and 2 thanks to your knowledge and telling me about that special g.m. timing tool I got grandpas new waterpump in for a fraction of what anyone would've done it for. Sucked putting the new one in I ended up having to pass it from the under driver side over the exhaust over the frame then stuck it in from the bottom. Guess theres a 1000 ways to skin a pig! Hey Brian, Could have sworn that I was subscribed to you, a few years ago, I could have sworn!!!! Anyways, I hit the sub button AGAIN! I purchased a 07 G5 2.2 vin-F & lucky me, This car has every problem a G5 can have & some!!! It was running when I approached at the lot so, The tapping at start up was hidden from me! When I realized the issue, I rushed & ordered a timing tensioner & THANK GOD I HAD MY LITTLE EXTENDABLE, ANTENNA STYLE MAGNET WITHIN REACH Because, As I unscrewed the 32mm socket, IT ALL CAME APART INTO PIECES & Thankfully I had the magnet ready! I just ordered a dr.engine timing set $124.88-133.93 after tax, from ebay! It comes with a new oil pump/front engine cover, water pump, both timing chains, 3 tensioners, oiler, & all the guides, 2 cam gears, 8 bolts(new cam bolts, & guide bolts, along with a front engine cover gasket. My water pump works fine so, I am debating on whether to change it & the biggest thing is, My cooling fan DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY ON ITS OWN! I extended all my know how & don't know how to fix it but, when I probed one of the pegs in the fuse box for the cooling fan relay, (test light attached to ground) When I touched 1 peg, the fan came on! I went to the junk yard & got another relay & that did not help! So, I connected to that peg in the fuse panel, ran to a toggle inside the car & then to ground so, When I hit the toggle, the fan comes on! Any suggestions on my cooling fan issue? it has a single fan yet, the fuse box has relays for cooling fan 1, & 2 with a 3rd spot for a fuse. The car had some front end damage in the past & i don't know if this fan is the correct fan or not? I also purchased a new crank bolt, & the two 0-rings for the coolant tube (90537379). Still need dexcool! Gasket maker & maybe a new thermostat gasket? Will a small sqeeze tube of gasket maker be enough for the timing job or do I need a full tube that fits into my caulking gun?

Great video. Yes. I watch the video to the very end and I appreciate the detail. the quality and the time it takes to make such a good video. thank you.
Thank you for your time into this and probably all your vids!! that helped soo much, now i know i can do it. im just a shade tree mechanic i prefer to rebuild an engine on a stand because leaning over the hood kills my back as i am fused . thanks again.
Funny you posted this today. I just finish a timing chain and water pump on a 2.2l ecotech this afternoon. I think I like working on my 2.5I better, but I have to say the timing was super simple. The chain really stick in the teeth compared to a belt. Oh I love your tips and Bonus footage, so I watch till the end
As always Brian, great video. There is a lot to that H2O pump! Where ever you feel the extra (put back together) instruction is needed, it probably is. Personally I can use all the help I can get. Thanks for all the work you put into your content!
It's retarded. I showed the lady my car, 07 town car. See the alternator? Under that is water pump. A handful of bolts, and fill with coolant and put 2 alternator bolts back in and I'm done in 30 min flat. Your Malibu takes me 30 min just to get the damn tool like this blue 1 in cause not enuff room, right beside the front support, can't jack up engine for the way it's made. It's Insanity. Only worse 1 was 3.5 ecoboost. 10.5 hours, and while I'm there it had Ober 100k, Ford says do timing set while there. I don't think I'll ever do another ecoboost unless it's mine. No more GM like this. Wtf GM???
Great videos as always. I watch to the end, but I don't always watch the bonus footage...BUT I usually skip to the end to give you credit for the whole vid.
This took me 3 days to complete. Mostly because I'm a goober and procrastinated. Your video made this a whole lost easier. I haven't turned it on yet. So I've yet to find out if it's gonna whine or not.
When I was an apprentice many moons ago my Mentor taught me to use thick grease to hold bolts inside the socket for tight areas. Dip the head of the bolt into red grease cover it good then pop it into your socket. It won’t come out until it’s threaded into where it is supposed to go.
Thank you so much for this video man. I been trying to figure this dumb water pump for over a month but you just gave me the information I needed to get the job done. Thee so called mechanics I talked to could not figure out how the hell to replace this pump. Even two Bridgestone Firestone places I went to turned me away because they didn’t know how to replace this part.
Brian I watched both videos as my water pump is leaking from the side of the engine. I already replaced my thermostat and put in a new radiator. Now the water looks like it needs to be replaced plus my belt needs to be replaced and probably do my tensioner assembly as well. How long does it take to replace the water pump? I will be getting the special tool as well.
Great videos! Saves me a ton if time and money. Unfortunately mine is whining now...do you have a video showing how to fix it? Or can you direct me to some instructions please??
Hey Brian, your video of the eco reach water pump replacement was spot on! I have a 40 year old Cornwall 10 mm deep well socket that has a magnet in it. The number is 10mm-mms-0210. Hopefully you can still get this from cornwell. Thanks again for the awesome video
I watched till the end was wondering what year your equinox is my daughter's is a 2016 you made this look alot easier than other video they were pulling exhaust manifold off and catalac converters off and alot of other parts
I was able to get the water pump holding tool on the timing sprocket without having to remove any of the timing sprocket bolts. I am really confused as to why you pulled them off, or even why you “turned the engine” to line up the holes to get the tool on. I was able to get it on without turning the engine at all. I understand there is a thin cover that goes over the timing sprocket that has 4 bolts, but it looks like you are taking off the bolts holding the sprocket in place
Thank you so much for this video!! I did one on a customers Terrain and it is whining and couldn’t figure it out to save my life. Will be resetting the tensioner
Good job...what hassle just to change a water pump. I hope mine doesn't go out on my 2011 Equinox! I did watch both parts to the end. There was a time when I would have tackled this job. But now I am 74 and would rather pay someone else to do it. I can tell that you have done these before. 😉
Hi Brian, Great video and i have a couple questions. First, does the exhaust have to come down in order to access the water pump? And, is there an advantage to using the "control freak" version of the timing chain holding tool? Thanks Scott
I'm a light duty mechanic as a hobby I guess. But I never dealt with a water pump like this before, I successfully replaced the water pump and didn't drop any bolts in the timing cover, the problem I have now is that transfer tube, mine has a tab on one side of the tube where the thermostat housing which is leaking now, to be fair I didn't replace the o-ring, my question is what's the tab for? I can't see any slot for it.
Thank you for the video, it was alot of help. My sister has a 2015 GMC Terrian and wants me to change the water pump, but I am going to think about it.
I have one for ya! On my 07 Pontiac G5 vin-F 2.2, The cooling fan does not operate! The fan spins when power & ground is applied. I thought maybe the relay was bad & replaced them but, That did not fix it! The temp displays on the dash so, I assume the temp sensor is okay? Since it was not operating, I removed the relay & taped into one pin & when I ground that pin, the fan comes on so, I ran a wire into the cab, to a toggle then to ground! I have a aftermarket fan controller but, the temp sensor is 3/8ths if I remember right...Any idea what size threads are on the factory temp sensor? I am wondering how I can run a aftermarket fan controller & still retain my temp display on the dash? Any suggestions???? Watched to the end!!! I enjoy watching & learning about the job that I am about to do! I watch them from beginning to end & watch as many video's as I can find regarding the issue of which I am about to tackle, To see what I am getting into! Looking for tips & tricks, & what to watch out for!!
So I did everything and started fine but when I went to burp the system, used a funnel and attachment to reservoir, notice it was backing coolant back up into my funnel and started getting hot, runs fine and wasn’t overheating before water pump was replaced. I didn’t replace the thermostat because it was running at good temp previously. Any idea?
Very helpful Thankyou. Our mailbu recently started whining I used the engine stethoscope and the sound is coming from the water pump could it be the tension on the timing chain never been touched
What if the car doesn't make a lot of whine noise at idle but makes a lot of whine noise when revved after pump replacement and is fixing the tensioner something that I should expect my mechanic to take care of free of charge?
There seems to be a turbo in my way. i will have to adapt and overcome, but great video. The hose to the back side of the water pump I assume is a push in to lock with the O ring correct?
The job went really good thank you for your thoroughness. I made a slick socket for bolt removal in the gear timing chain area. I just cut off a magnet and put it inside a 1/4” drive deep socket, also wrapped a little hockey tape around it for grip to spin bolt. IMG_0453.heic
I know this is a five year old video but if I pull the cover off the water pump to see if the wheel turns and it does not turn do I need to replace the water pump cause I do have a leak on the bottom of the water pump I'm thinking it's just a seal n not needing to replace the whole pump
Your good bro keep up the good work. All your tips were great. I was having trouble before watching your video. Thank god i did. Thanks bro. Congrats on the pullapart win as well

31 December 2021, I watched both part 1 & 2 to the end. Thanks for sharing. Help me a lot. Good Job
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you. going to do the water pump on my wife's 2010 Hhr. A very thorough, and informative video.
Glad it was helpful! You're welcome!
Love thelonger video way more helpful thanks
The extra footage is always great to watch bro
I'm gonna go for it tomorrow thanks for the video
Great job great explanation. Watched both videos from beginning to end. It worked out well for me and I'm glad I didn't take it to the shop.
Love the Red Green show as well and I watch all your videos to the end
Brian I watched both videos as my water pump is leaking from the side of the engine. I already replaced my thermostat and put in a new radiator. Now the water looks like it needs to be replaced plus my belt needs to be replaced and probably do my tensioner assembly as well. How long does it take to replace the water pump? I will be getting the special tool as well.
1-3 hours, normally 2-4 hour job but expect 6+
Great videos! Saves me a ton if time and money. Unfortunately mine is whining now...do you have a video showing how to fix it? Or can you direct me to some instructions please??
This is what I've got and a part 1
Hey Brian, your video of the eco reach water pump replacement was spot on! I have a 40 year old Cornwall 10 mm deep well socket that has a magnet in it. The number is 10mm-mms-0210. Hopefully you can still get this from cornwell. Thanks again for the awesome video
Eco tech. Not eco reach
I watched till the end was wondering what year your equinox is my daughter's is a 2016 you made this look alot easier than other video they were pulling exhaust manifold off and catalac converters off and alot of other parts
Watched both parts to the end!! Thanks for the education.
I need this on my 2.2 in the HHR. That engine bay looks way more open than what I'm dealing with
Right I did on a Saturn Vue but still great guidelines to get job done
Loved your Man's Prayer (Red Green) at the end - so yes I watched to the end. Great video - I've got a Buick Verano that will need this soon.
I watched to the end but it took me 4 years to find it to watch.
Thanks for taking the time to make these vids brother
I watched to the end & now I know what not to work on. Thank you for a great video.
Thank you so much for this video!! I did one on a customers Terrain and it is whining and couldn’t figure it out to save my life. Will be resetting the tensioner
Entertainment video on your descent job , great video Brian.
great video now on the next video can you show how to use the tool to hold the 2 camshafts ?
I'll do better than that! I'll go back in time and create a part 1 of 2. You're welcome!
Watched both parts to the end. Thank you
Hi you can use a longer 10 to aling. Tre holes
Do you have to remove cat. To remove metal “hose” pipe from rear of water pump?
Great video brian. I was wondering if you had used the OTC 6616 holding tool. The bolts couldn't fall into the engine when they were removed.
I have a 2009 Chevy Cobalt. Would this procedure work on my vehicle
Good job...what hassle just to change a water pump. I hope mine doesn't go out on my 2011 Equinox! I did watch both parts to the end. There was a time when I would have tackled this job. But now I am 74 and would rather pay someone else to do it. I can tell that you have done these before. 😉
Doing now did you remove exaust manifold
Hi Brian, Great video and i have a couple questions. First, does the exhaust have to come down in order to access the water pump? And, is there an advantage to using the "control freak" version of the timing chain holding tool? Thanks
Scott
What’s the torque specs?
It's that Pittsburgh Mini Pick I love those tools 🔧 I like the video by the way thanks for your help brotha.
Thanks Brian I purchased the Control Freak version of this tool that you posted in the description and got it done 👌
Would you share the name of the silicone? Thank you
Don't use it. The gasket will seal without making a mess and a bunch of clean up for the next guy when that aftermarket pump inevitably goes out.
how many miles did this engine have before the water pump failed?
Thanks for the video brother! Highly appreciated!! Prepping to do this on a 08 Saturn sky, wish me luck!
Also, watched both videos till the end 🤙🏽
Why would the placement of the gear immobilizer affect timing chain tension?
You just turned it clockwise a smidge to align holes.
Great video. This is a job in dreading. Thank you for the tutorial!
Thank you for the show. I really enjoyed it. now I can FIX on my wife Malibu and use what you gave to give thanks
Any idea?
Thanks u help me out alot today. Only watched ur first video and was over book time by 3min for first time
Very helpful Thankyou. Our mailbu recently started whining I used the engine stethoscope and the sound is coming from the water pump could it be the tension on the timing chain never been touched
i watched both parts all the way. multitasking. and i edit videos so i feel your pain,
I did this work spot on and have a wine from the pump now. Any times on what to do next?
Great video!! I need to replace the timing chain and waterpump. Do you have any timing chain videos for a malibu?
I watched to the end, brother! Great videos as always! BFATE is always why. You make great content & thanks for doing it.
What if the car doesn't make a lot of whine noise at idle but makes a lot of whine noise when revved after pump replacement and is fixing the tensioner something that I should expect my mechanic to take care of free of charge?
How many hours of labor an parts?
There seems to be a turbo in my way. i will have to adapt and overcome, but great video. The hose to the back side of the water pump I assume is a push in to lock with the O ring correct?
"if you stick your finger in the back, right there" --- always the best quotes
Watched to the end my friend. Thanks for the video.
Thanks Craig!
The job went really good thank you for your thoroughness. I made a slick socket for bolt removal in the gear timing chain area. I just cut off a magnet and put it inside a 1/4” drive deep socket, also wrapped a little hockey tape around it for grip to spin bolt. IMG_0453.heic
I dropped a bolt in the timing chainber how do I get it out? Please help
Watched till the end and thank you for your work.
I know this is a five year old video but if I pull the cover off the water pump to see if the wheel turns and it does not turn do I need to replace the water pump cause I do have a leak on the bottom of the water pump I'm thinking it's just a seal n not needing to replace the whole pump
Always watch to the end. Why wouldn't we.
Thanks Glen!
I watched to the end, but sometimes I skip to the end to see the BFATE, does that hurt you? Glad I don't have this car, mine are trouble enough.
Your good bro keep up the good work. All your tips were great. I was having trouble before watching your video. Thank god i did. Thanks bro. Congrats on the pullapart win as well
Videos take forever to make but the time is worth valuable info. This nonsense is why I'm not buying any more front wheel drive anything.
What type of filter do you use to filter the coolant? They would have come in handy with the last thermostat job I did.
