The tape end hook is made to move back and forth. This is to make up the thickness of the end hook while using it in the Pull position.

Most if not all tape measures have their own length stamped on them. When measuring inside something just run the tape end to end and add its length. IE, tape measure stamp is 3in and you run in inside a cabinet end to end width wise and read 27in. That cabinet is 30in wide.

    Did I miss something?!
This is a comedy video, right?!
You fix a magnet to the body of the tape, by which you fix the body of the tape to a steel surface, then walk the hook-end end of the tape away from the body of the tape - ie the point that gives you the reading you want.
How do you read the measurement from 2 mtrs away from the read-out point?
I still have a 2 mtr Stanley tape that I bought about 55 years ago. (Made in Aus. 😉😊)
Aside from being short, the hook-end is not magnetic so I don't use it much these days.
ALL of my other tapes - of various lengths up to 8 mtrs - have magnetic hook-ends, enabling me to take the read-out point - ie the tape body - with me.
The 'thumbnail' seems to suggest if I want to know the thickness of a dod of wood, I should place the face of the hook-end of the tape flush against the FACE of the wood closest to me and measure AWAY from that face.
    Huh?!? 🤔🤪
If this is comedy, the material needs A LOT of work.

I’m confused on the measuring a flat surface between two objects, where you took a measurement and then spun it around to take a second measurement. With the tape fully extended and the back of the measuring tape flush against the other endpoint you should have one reading, then add the length of the tape measure body which is usually imprinted on the body of the box (usually given in half inch increments such as 2” or 2.5”). Is there a reason to not use it that way?

    • @bwillan

Sometimes the length of the tape body isn't a nice round number or isn't even printed on the tape body.

I’ve never had a problem with a 25’ Stanley. When it comes to taking floor to ceiling/ vertical molding measurements it’s a lot easier to measure a set distance of say 60” from the floor, then measure from the top down and add them together. Or you could climb up a ladder and get a good visual to add for the tape measure body.

That's why if he has a 5 or 7.5 metres tape measure it's long enough to measure a 3 metres distance,😂😂😂 it's a catch 99 situation, because if u have a five metres tape but need to measure a 6 metres distance then u must follow the same procedure of turning tape measure around, but it is a very good idea what he shows if you need to measure a longer distance,

@@larryrobinson08 to be honest there's no fixed way to do it, because if he had a 5 metres tape measure it would not be necessary to do that,it's long enough to measure 3 metres with a 5 metres tape measure 😂😂😂,if u need to measure again a 6 metres distance with a 5 metres tape measure the same procedure must be followed, to spin the tape around,I don't think there is a perfect solution, this video helps people who didn't think about it before,I see some negative feedback but I say again it's a good video

The last tip was wrong, there is a reason for that loosen part, the first centimeter of the meter is missed 2mm, if you hooked the meter that part will add that 2mm, and if you pushed it the thickness of the head of the hook will add that 2mm too.

I wouldn't have taped end of tape measure. Just add 1mm to your measurement. Good video anyway. 👍🏼

      No!
Every tape has the same loose hook for a reason!
The loose has the same length as the thickness of that hook.

He was taping it to illustrate the point that if it doesn't move your inside/outside measurements will be off by 1mm with lack of the free movement, as he explained in the text in the vid. 👍

For year when I started the plumbing trade our boss would only allow us to use a folding stick rule. I still use it for certain things like running copper.

@@charlespartak2435 I started in the 70’s and my boss was very old school, in his youth they used horse and buggy, that’s how old he was. Lol He believed it was a lot more accurate and that is what he believed in. He wasn’t into modern tools or equipment and man did we pay for it. In terms of using the stick rule, anything over 21ft for galvanized, 20ft for pvc, 10ft for cast etc. we’d just eye that up, when we’d within 6ft or so then we’d use our stick rule. By the late 80’s we started sneaking the Stanley tape measure on the job, he wasn’t to happy about it but by then everyone was using them, he gave in but we still used the rule when running copper in rough-ins. Also worked great for holding the stub out level when we would make that solider joint.
If we didn’t have electricity on a job, he would break out the old hand crank drills if you can believe it.
We rarely used and type of equipment like, backhoes, jack-hammers, skill saws nothing! All by hand. We’d dig ditches 300 ft long with 5 men. He didn’t care if it took 2 weeks or a month, he was getting paid by the hour. I have the bad knees to prove it too. We had an 1 1/4” galvanized tee with a 5ft piece of pipe for a handle, a jackhammer chisel taped through the tee, one person would knell down and hold the chisel handle and the other person would swing a 16lb mall and hit the chisel, that’s how we busted concrete. We repiped an entire slab house like that!! Unbelievable!!!! Pieces of the chisel would mushroom off and fly off like bullets and hit us and hurt like a SOB. Lol

@charles partak oh it was smart on his part, he was charging by the hour and that’s how he grew up doing it. He wasn’t up for change.

@@charlespartak2435 I think you need to look back a little further than 30 years. 50 years ago I never met a tape measure that didn’t break first time you dropped it. Modern tape measures are a lot tougher. When I started my craft as a wood worker there were old timers that make those funny looking 6’ folding tapes do magic tricks!

My dad only used a would rule also he retired in 1991. However, for brick work a folding brick spacing rule is still easier to use than a tape. I have both and only use the tape if I can't find my wood one.
