I remember someone in school said to me that metal and rock isn't real music because you can't dance to it. That's just not even true but some people just kinda write some things off without really getting to know them. I do get if it's not your preference but it's kinda disrespectful to just dismiss the talent/art completely

@@MaraMash That and getting the un-deserved reputation as 'Devil's Music'. It's like
'Hey guys, there ARE Christian Metal Bands! Go look for yourselves! Not to mention, if lyrics can be sung without instruments it would be just as easy for satanic cults to sing like the Gregorian Chant stuff, as 'classical' of music styles as you can possibly get.
It has been proven thousands of times over that 'Pure' and 'Holy' people can be corrupted. They could do and have done all sorts of things behind closed doors and you don't blink an eye at that. But music shows, completely in the open literally in front of God and everybody, somehow being satanic or evil? You are stupid.'
So the supposition that Metal is Evil is completely wrong.

I’d argue that growling type metal is exactly “just noise” and I put it in the same dumpster as mumble rap. This track would have been elevated without the growling bits.

If memory serves me right, she did an interview with Elizabeth Zharoff (The Charismatic Voice) a year or two back where she talked about technique and actually broke out some proper Opera singing to demonstrate where one style relates to the other. It was a long chat, but entertaining. She also seems to be a totally chill and lovely person.

Nice one! Brittney's real surname is Hayes: "Brittney Slays" started as a joke but everyone's been leaning into it for so long that it's stuck. She uses a lot of vocal layering when recording in the studio, calling it the "Choir Of Brittney". Scott, the drummer, is her partner.

Thank you for another excellent and interesting reaction. Brittney is one of my top four favorite metal vocalists for the richness of her tone. Everyone loves her high notes, but I really prefer the subtlety and girth of her chest voice. Two great videos to further explore her voice a power metal context are Cleanse the Bloodline and Legacy. Two other great and fun videos are Acoustipex - the acoustic version of the epic title song Apex - and Brittney's opera battle with Ty Christian singing Brindisi.

    • @Chruce

There is probably no better introduction to power metal than this song. It showcases the incredible skill of the musicians, and really imparts the spine-tingling adrenaline rush flavor of the genre beautifully. I love watching the journey this song takes people on the first time they hear it.
It also stays good even when you dig down.
The story told by Apex and Abyss is genuinely good as a work of fiction, too, provided you like sci-fi and fantasy (there's a bit of both in there). Through the very limited medium of song lyrics, they manage a chilling villain, redemption, discovery, character growth, and even some genuine suspense. At one point they were working on a graphic novel adaptation. I don't know what happened with that, but if they ever release it, I'll snap it up immediately.
And then the band members themselves are a bunch of lovely, nice Canadians who are known to be approachable and warm with their fans.

@Soprano Notes: I have a few recommendations, since you asked:
    1) Abyss, Unleash the Archers. The first song off the next album, the album Abyss won a Juno Award (Canadian Grammy) for 2020 Metal Album of the Year in Canada.
    2) Northwest Passage, Unleash the Archers. This song is considered to be "Canada's second national anthem," and is a Canadian folk song originally written by Stan Rogers in 1981. Unleash the Archers did a cover of this song, and put their spin on what is normally a "sea shanty"-style piece.
    3) Christmas Truce, Sabaton. Sabaton is a Swedish power metal band that sings about military history. Christmas Truce is about the Christmas Truce of World War I, and should you react to it, the end of the video has a treat I know you'll enjoy!
    4) Hallowed Be Thy Name, Iron Maiden, live at the Hammersmith, 1982. This performance is older than I am (I was born in 1983). But nonetheless, this performance is one of Brittney Slayes' influences: Bruce Dickinson. Known as the "Human Air Raid Siren," most people didn't know who Bruce Dickinson was, nor had heard Hallowed Be Thy Name when Iron Maiden performed this live in 1982, the song and album not being released yet. Story-wise, Hallowed Be Thy Name is the thoughts and feelings of a condemned prisoner, as his appointed time with the gallows in the prison courtyard approaches. As a result, he goes through the five stages of grief at his own impending death, and at the end, finally accepts his own death. As an opera singer, I think you would appreciate not just the musical skill, but also the story, of Hallowed Be Thy Name.

I first discovered this band via another opera singer / vocal coach doing a reaction to this song. I was blown away. Then I heard that it was a concept album telling a single story and that the follow up Abyss had just been released. So I ordered both of them on vinyl and only listened to songs from previous albums. When I finally had them both in my hands I sat down with a nice glass of rum in one hand and the lyrics sheet in the other and listened to both back-to-back following along with the story. It was glorious. When I got to the climax towards the end of the second album I felt like Bastian riding on Falcor at the end of Neverending Story! WOOOAAAH! 😁

Really well done analysis. I am glad you noticed the similarities to older classical music. I think that is what draws me to metal because of my early love of the great classical pieces. Interesting that you caught on to the "commanding call" of the guitarists vocal line, my interpretation is that he is representing the one who wakes the immortal warrior from his slumber. You will find UTA's cover of "Northwest Passage" both entertaining and intriguing to analyze since it displays a the bands versatility and you have more isolated vocals from Brittany.

Brittney has done two interviews with other reactors, Elizabeth of The Charismatic Voice (goes into detail about Brittney's vocal training) and Chase Carneson (more of a general interview). There are a lot of good recommendations as to what other UTA songs to react to, my suggestions are "Tonight We Ride," the "Brindisi" opera battle, "The Wind That Shapes the Land," and the "Queen of the Reich" (Karaoke). The band was in a Karaoke bar after a concert and they realised that Brittney's favourite band had songs available and talked her into singing one, then the magic happens (dark bar, bad PA system, cellphone video (not so great picture or sound) but it doesn't matter you don't notice).

The lyrics tell the story, and yes the fans talk about it (with each other and with the band, they're super-friendly and active on various social media), and the band also releases a book that shows all the lyrics and talks about the story a bit more in-depth, along with great artwork. But right off the bat, that first bit of lyrics you read, that tells you this person is waking up from a slumber of 1000+ years. The lyrics really do a good job of telling the story.

I am not a musician but I think some of the harmonies are Brittany's own vocals being layered in post. (I think she calls it the "Brittney Choir"). Excellent reaction. Was fortunate enough to see her singing live with Ayreon: Beneath the Waves lives in Tilburg, Holland this past weekend. She is absolutely astounding live, and gives so much energy and joy in her performance, and was constantly smiling. By far, she was the highlight among the 17 or so vocalists. For other Power Metal bands, you might want to check out Helloween, Symphony X, Queensrÿche, or Judas Priest, if you haven’t already.

Great analysis, Jess! Brittney is a talented vocalist, and the production maximizes her impact here with the layering and delay. My favorite aspect of this composition is the one chromatic, or is it modal, chord that starts the second line of the chorus. It takes a well-known progression and infuses it with a sense of triumph and new beginnings. The musicianship and ensemble performance is superb. A wonderful experience!

As an opera singer you would probably like to know that Brittney is a sweetheart troll. She likes going to karaoke incognito and freak everybody out singing opera😂

I really love how you broke down this analysis and appreciated a style of music (which I grew up with and adore) in a way where most would just fob it off as noise ...You see the girls have been slowly taking over the metal industry (which I'm loving) and taking it to new heights. Thank you so much! I am going to post this vid on facebook to hopefully attract more to metal from any genre and to your intellectual approach to this kind of music. Stay Gorgeous girl you Rock!!!
P.S. I'm a metal head and I love opera and classical music 😉

It saw the singer, Britney Slayes, perform live with Ayreon a few weeks ago, and wow. I know the band and have listened to their music, even own an album, so I knew she is good, but live she really blew me away. She was the best singer there IMO, and all the singers there were spectacular and put in great performances.

Always good to see someone enjoying UTA. Also good to see someone actually analyze the song, rather than just listen along to it for views. If you like them, you should try Powerwolf too. They are a power metal band as well. Another very powerful voice. Very theatrical band, both with their videos and live performances. Dancing With The Dead is probably a good one to start with.

Dunno if anyone else has ever mentioned to you, but one of my favorite Brittney clips on RUclips is at some karaoke club in Europe or the UK, after the final concert of a full European tour, several drinks in, and just still belting cleanly and beautifully. It's just epic, this group is just great.

Excellent breakdown, review, and reaction of this incredible piece! As all other UTA fans feel, I’m sure, I hope you continue down this rabbit hole. Tonight we ride is the usual 2nd reaction of UTA. It shows her range much better and is a normal music video, so no studio. While I love that, I actually prefer Legacy and Cleanse the Bloodlines. Those 2 are more power ballads.

I sincerely hope you're enjoying this. I'll admit I bounced off UtA a few times before it finally taking hold, but now it's right up there with my favorite bands. If I may make a suggestion: The Wind That Shapes The Land. All their songs are awesome, but man that one is... something else.

Ive read that Brittney sang Alto for many years in a choir before rockin....
Other powermetal bands that's on the top these days are:
Loverbites an all female powermetal band from Japan. That has an enormous musicality thru all the band members....
BattleBeast from Finland with their metal version of Anne Wilson from Heart...
    Noora on front vocals...
You have a lot to enjoy..
Much love from Stockholm Sweden/ J

One of the identifying characteristics of Power Metal is a galloping guitar riff. It's not always present, but more often than not, it is, and this song in particular, it's there for sure. And by galloping, it's exactly what you'd think of as a horse is galloping. Just like that old theme to many 60s Westerns.

Not only in power metal, Iron Maiden had these early one before the term "power metal" was coined. In particular, I'm thinking of their 1983 song "Run To The Hills".

Excellent observation on the growl/evil voice. That's Grant, and it's intended exactly as you commented. He's 'singing' from the perspective of the villain, who awakened the immortal, while Brittney's vocals represent the Immortal himself. I don't like the growl vocal style as a general rule, but with UtA it's only done for emphasis or a different perspective, which I think is really cool.

  • @TofuBug24

It's cool that you meantioned Classical music because there have been studies done on Metal vs. Classical and they are way more closely related than most people realize. The technical proficiency alone to play either is leagues above your typical pop music! You then add in the composition where bands like Nightwish whose keyboardist Tuomas composes grand epic songs from the lyrics to the instrumentals. Or bands like Dream Theater where guitarists like John Petrucci, and John Myung can shread through a bridge that is simultaneously LONGER than most radio songs in their entirety but also does not bore you because of all the transitions and creativity in those 3 to 4 minutes.
Lots of HARD CORE Metsl fans are also huge Classical fans. I got to experience time in Norway and Sweden so I got to see some of the local metal scene and some concerts which were amazing. But I also got to see Peer Gynt in the original Norwegian opera house Edvard Greig's composition was first played (In the Hall of the Mountain King is still one of my favorite songs)
There's even correlation between happiness and general feelings between Classical listeners and Metal listeners. They are both some of the chillest, happiest, respectful people out there. I think thats because both are raw aggressive expressions of passion and emotions which it helps to get that out. Also lets not pretend people like Vivaldi, and Mozart weren't basically Rock Stars in their time.

Loved this reaction and your analysis! So fun to see people approach different music than their own specialty and get as enthused about the music as a dedicated fan. ULA have some great, complex music, not all of it is at this high a tempo, but always incredible guitar, drum, and vocals. Brittany really does Slay. Plus the storytelling, something I really enjoy are the cohesive albums.

I would (like others have) suggest Tonight We Ride next for being blown away by Brittney's belt. After that there is lots of other stuff to explore different aspects of their musical mastery.

Very few musicians can play this well, and those that can almost inevitably find themselves playing metal - because that is where the musical challenges are. Look at the guitarists while they are actually playing. They have the guitar with a raised neck, resting on the left knee. This is how classical players do it. And they have both mastered the soft-hands technique. Lesser players, when trying to play fast, end up with a death-grip on the neck that leaves them floundering and unable to move. And for two guitars to play this fast, and in perfect rhythmic sync is extremely impressive. The bass player uses a plucking style I've never seen before and it works extraordinarily well, providing a slight syncopation that really drives the beat. And what can we say about the drummer - tight, fast and committed.
