im an olympiacos fan, so it goes without mention that spanoulis is my guy, but guys like bodiroga had less games in the league(different format back then). so its unfair to compare points or w/e. mike james shouldnt be on the discussion, he is like a teodosic... amazing players, totally inconsistent and if they have a bad game they take their teams down with them... i remember teodosic when we faced him in 2012 finals against csska. the guy spent the first half firing on all cylinders... then he choked and had me yelling at the screen "thats who you are" every time he was missing a shot(he was for years in olympiacos and i love him, but he was inconsistent with us as well! xD)... on the other hand guys like diamantidis were almost never wrong... he wouldnt have a 30pts game, but if he missed 3 shots he knew it wasnt his day and he had to pass it to not ruin his team, and he still was a great defender and a playmaker. spanoulis without saying he could be 0/30 in the first 3 quarters and a half but if you needed 5 pts in the last minute he would give you 6. then you have guys like navarro, rodrigues, fernandes who cannot be overlooked, despite having played in the nba which fucks up their euroleague legacy

Spanoulis was a beast both in pao and olympiacos. He was the finals mvp in 2009 in a team full of stars. Then he moved to olympiacos in a very young team and won back to back titles. With him also Olympiacos made 2 appearances in finals 2015 2017. These finals took place in the home court of Real and Fener accordingly. He is in every stat line in the history of euroleague but i think that the reason why he is the goat is his mentality.

Credit to Mike James, I loved him when he was playing in Vitoria for my team, Baskonia. But I think is delusional to even try to create a debate about him being the Euroleague GOAT because of the scoring record. He hasn´t even won a MVP or a Euroleague title, and I highly doubt even if he is a top 10 Euroleague guard of all time. He is not better than Spanoulis, Diamantidis, Navarro, Llull, Larkin, De Colo, Teodosic... Also, the scoring record in the competition needs big context. In the NBA, the record is more meaningful because they have played 82 game seasons for 70 years. Here, the record is highly influenced because of the number of games that the Euroleague has now a days. To put it in context, in the finnal seasons of the 2000s a Euroleague team could play a maximum of 21 games in total (10 games Group Stage, 6 games Top 6, a best of 3 playoff series and 2 games in the Final Four). Now a days, you have 34 Regular season games, a best of 5 playoff series and a Final Four, so around 40 games, almost double.
EDIT: Just watched the video. The fact that there´s not even a mention of Juan Carlos Navarro and that Mike James is named in the top 4 is just ridiculous. Not a single rational argument can defend that opinion.

    GOAT: Diamantidis, Spanoulis, Bodiroga
    Best Player: Bodiroga, Parker, Kirilenko
    Best Scorer: Parker, Larkin, James
    Best Defender: Kirilenko, Diamantidis, Hines
    Best Creator: Calathes, Papaloukas, Diamantidis
    Best Shooter: Carroll, Navaro, Vezenkov
    Most Clutch: Lull, Spanoulis, Diamantidis
Fun to watch: Saras, Teodosic, Rodriguez
Honorable mentions: Micic, Mirotic, De Colo
James can't be considered yet the GOAT. He needs to win at least one Euroleague title and imo two just to be actually in the conversation.
He will get his first MVP most likely if Monaco finishes 2nd place this season. Counting stats are not that important. Longevity matters off course, but even the averages don't tell the whole truth.
The general rule is that we can't compare players or teams from different eras. Basketball changes slowly each year, but there are actual changes that lead to that. Bigger court plus more space because of better shooters, assists for foul shots, a lot more games, best europeans going to the NBA, etc.

@@nthimosmauromatidis2231The first player in assists isn't Spanoulis, it is Calathes, but like I said we can't compare them just by counting stats or the averages, because the game is different. I am also taking into account that Calathes or Papaloukas aren't great shooters, making their job more difficult than the one of Spanoulis or James which are elite scorers that lead the defenses to get their attention so others could score from their assists.
To be honest I thought we were talking about modern Euroleague, that's why Dominique or Kukoc wasn't included on my lists. Macijauskas didn't have plenty of seasons like James and Larkin and I made an exception for Parker, because he was that great and impactful. Spanoulis, no question. It's not only the titles and the mvps, it's that he lead a team of boys in 2012 and 2013 to win the euroleague. Papanikolaou, Sloukas, Mantzaris, even Printezis and Hines were almost nobodies in 2012 and together with average level players like Erceg, Gecevicious, Antic and Dorsey, Spanoulis won the Euroleague back to back. With his play (1st all time scorer and assister at his time) he turned players like Hines,Dundston, Hunter, Birtch, Milutinov into stars with multimillion contracts. Diamantidis is also a legend but he won everything with the highest budget teams, with star teamates. The same with Saras. It is not only how good a player is but the situations under he shines.

    1. Dimitris Diamantidis
    2. Dejan Bodiroga
    3. Vasilis Spanoulis
    4. Sarunas Jasikevicius
    5. Carlos Navvaro
Leaving aside my love for Panathinaikos and trying to speak clearly with basketball criteria there is one reason why Diamantidis was better than Spanoulis.
Diamantidis was an extraordinary defender (one of the best ever in Europe) and a very good offensive player. Just remember the winning shot at the Eurobasket semi-finals in 2005. On the other hand, Spanoulis was a great offensive player (better than Diamantidis and one of the best of all times) but not a noteworthy defender. I mean that Dimitris was a more versatile player being good at both defense and offence. And don't forget what the great Kobe Bryant once said: "I wish I had on my team one player named Diamantidis".

James is the closest to an NBA superstar/superscorer we can get in Euroleague - not because he is injured or on drugs or chased by the law, but because he is short. He is pure joy to observe. He does lack in titles and that counts, however I will add that he lacks in terms of attitude / persona too. Especially while younger, he was a bit controversial and not well respected.
The difference with Spanoulis is that Bill had global recognition and love. I remember fans of the opposing teams applauding him. Moreover, he was inspirational for his team mates and youngsters that looked up on him. You could hear stories about him and his obsession with basketball that bring Christiano Ronaldo and Kobe to mind (I think he was not as extreme as they were but still). Additionally, the 2 titles that he won with Olympiakos - especially the first one - were with low budget / fame team mates. Yes, you know Sloukas, Papanikolaou, Hines, Printezis, but who knew them at the time? I doubt you could have substituted Spanoulis with any other player and won those titles.
I believe he removed part of the stress from younger team mates because they all knew that when it mattered, when the ball burned, he would carry the team. This way, his team mates were able to play their game.
Moreover, and I cannot stress this enough, he was a monster at pick n roll. He has invented careers that did not exist for his center team mates. I was watching his games and i was like 'how does he pass the ball to the center so effortlessly?' and then when he stopped no one else could do it this well.
Finally, part of his legend was that he left an a-ma-zing, all star pao team, with the best coach, top class team mates in order to succeed on the biggest pao adversary olympiakos. Olympiakos at the time had a mediocre team that hadn't won greek championship or euroleague for ages. Well, he made it and that's a story by itself.

Mike James is borderline top 25, putting him on the Euroleague goat discussion is the worst take i have heard from this other than that great channel.
Saras, Parker, Siskauskas, Diamantidis, Batiste, Papaloukas, Navarro, Llull, Sergi, Spanoulis,Printezis,Baston, Bodiroga, De Colo were way more complete, impactful and successful on big games than James
Scola,Andersen,Smodis, Holden, Langdon, Larkin, Hines, Micic, Nicholas, Calathes, Vujcic, Teodosic, Nocionni are also higher than him but i agree it could be debatable for some reasons (years played in the league etc)

Mike James is my favorite Euroleage player since he was young, playing for Panathinaikos. The GOAT is Diamantidis, cause he is the definition of the captain. Always humble and always playing for the team. He never wanted fame and glory so he never focused on stats. Yet he is the most famous and most glorious among Panathinaikos fans. P.S. Antonis Fotsis is the most underated player ever. If not the best player in his position, surely top 3 players ever played in that position. I believe that he should be an honorble mention, althought he is not famous.

The number of championships won factor is the least important one for such a discussion in euro basketball. The most important factor, the team's roster, is almost never decided by the player in question on euro teams. Also the Final 4 format favours surprises and most of the teams that became champions weren't the best one during the season. Instead we should look for how much that player influenced his team and in which way.

  • @Grimwish7

In Euroleague is very difficult to choose a goat. Its better to make a top3 or top5.

James is an excellent shooter and scorer in general BUT he has spend his career in second tier teams playing the hero and hogging the ball. When he plays well or when he is not properly defended they win, when he is not playing well they lose. All the others in this video played in highly competitive teams that had alternatives to "hero ball" thus time and attempts were shared better with their teamates. Spanoulis didn't even play that much in the 2012 final because he wasn't in the zone (at least early on) guess what Olympiacos closed the difference without him and when he returned to the game they won. James' teams rely so much on him and that's why he has these "crazy" stats.

Only ONE player in the era you are talking about could do all of that combined, at will, and he chose to always play for the team, never stat padding, never wanting to take the spotlight unless he had to, always delivering every night.
