Motor Overflow

What is motor overflow?!

Motor overflow is extraneous movement in a limb not involved in a motor action.
.
Motor overflow is expected in toddlerhood as the child is mastering new skills.
.
However, as skills are mastered, the overflow should resolve.
.
If you are seeing motor overflow in your child with tasks that they have mastered or continue to struggle with, try these three tips:
1. Continue to practice the task in order to master it.
2. Check for retained primitive reflexes. Retained primitive reflexes can cause the brain and body to get "stuck" and unable to master new skills.
3. Include more gross motor tasks into the daily routine. These can be animal walks, running and jumping, climbing, anything that involves the entire body to build that brain-body connection.
