I just loaded my Hoover Carpet Cleaner up in my car to take it in to be repaired. I looked on the internet to find a repair shop when your video popped up about the brushes not spinning. What a miracle! I'm 73 years old and thanks to your video, I repaired it myself.

With only ladies in this household---you certainly help us out of a jam. We got the machine maintenance about a year ago and we've only used it twice. It was surely a bomber when I realized the brushes were not turning again. A quick run to the internet and your helpful advice got us back in business. No more streaks and it smells much better. Thank You Sir!!!

Thank you for your great detailed video. I just completed the installation of my new turbine and it is working great. You are an excellent instructor, as I have never done a repair such as this, and you made it easy to know what to do by following your instructions. We only paid $23.00 for the replacement part. So saved lots of money!!!

Great video. I am inspired to go as far as trying to free up the turbine with the WD40 and drill....not so sure about unscrewing things and putting them back together. I just want to say "thank you" for looking out for all of us that can't really afford to run to the "fix it" place every time something doesn't work right.

Your instructions are clear and concise. I fixed my non-spining brush problem in less that 30 minutes after watching your video and that included searching for the lost screws I had left over from the last time I tried to repair the turbine without your help.

Thank you so much for posting this and taking the mystery out of why the brushes weren't spinning on the steamvac. I had borrowed a friend's and did 2 rounds of cleaning before noticing the brushes were stuck. I followed your video and sure enough, there was rust in the gears. A little lubricant and I was back in business! Videos like yours have saved us hundreds of dollars and I'm so appreciative... Have a great holiday season!

Thanks so much for this video. I've never fixed anything in my life, and I was able to follow your instructions with no trouble. In my case, the baring below the one you show in the video had seized, so I removed the little donut-shaped one and oiled the one underneath. After jiggling it a bit, it started moving. I then used your idea and used the opening where the brushes click in and turned it for a minute or so. The machine works great now. Thanks so much for taking the time to post this. Your instructions are thorough and clear.

Thank you for this video, I found a couple more things worth mentioning: I decided to go a step further and open that gear box. Turns out this entire assembly is driven by air, not an electric motor. My bearings were fine, in fact the plastic piece that gets spun by the air moving by it was cracked in half. This was the root of my problem. I need to find that part if I can, if not I will need to get the whole assembly. Also to note: When reassembling the drive assembly, watch for the door hinge to line up properly. This little door is what controls the speeds, if not put back in place properly it will default to closed, and the brushes still won't spin.

Great Video. I had a little bit more difficulty as both bearings were frozen. After I disassembled the brush drive unit, the top bearing was frozen. I used WD-40 and soaked the bearing about a 1/2 hour and still could not rotate the gear by hand. I use a pair of pliers to twist the bearing back and forth and finally got it free. I then removed the top bearing and both gears to get to the lower bearing. I soaked that lower bearing in WD-40 but still could not rotate the shaft with the gear wheels back in place. I finally removed the top bearing again and both gears and use a pair of pliers to break the shaft free (becareful to not grab the part of the shaft that is a gear as it can be damaged. I was able to free up the lower bearing and lubricate it. After reassembly, it worked like new! Thank you so much.
NOTE: Water collection tank must be in place to get the brushes to turn.

Doublewide6, thanks! You just saved me and my husband from buying a new carpet machine. I was able to disassemble, get to the problem and fix it! I went a step further and took the little housing off the gear box so I could get to the lower bearing and the turn thingy. Reassembled and it works! I am going to go ahead and order the entire gear box for $28 because my butterfly flange isn't moving properly. But, with four dogs I have to have my machine working every day! YOU ROCK!

I have this issue. I don't usually sub repair channels but this vid is very well done, complete with all the links! Thanks. Looks like a ball of carpet fiber and hair jammed my brushes leading to the green plastic shaft snapping in half. I will first try to eval the gears and bearings, pin the shaft and see if that might work. Thanks again.--- added: pinning the shaft did not hold up to the forces generated, so I machined an aluminum shaft with an end threaded 10-24, drilled through center of the brush hub and twisted it on. Brushes turn great now and this repair is very durable.

Thanks so much for your insight! This did the trick with our almost 10-year-old SteamVac. Like others, I did end up having to open the turbine case, but with some judicious cleaning and lubricant, everything is running like new. The roller bearing for the turbine was very grungy but a bit of spray lube cleaned out a lot of the gunk.
Not bad for a $0 repair. And now I know how to put a replacement turbine assembly in if/when this one fails irreparably.
    Thanks again!

Hadn’t used the machine for many months after I couldn’t get the brushes to spin. Tried getting the hub to move like you did with the chisel. Without the drill though. Afraid I would just shear something off. So kinda threw up my hands and put it away. Figured I’d just have to have someone fix it after we moved.
Found your video the other day and followed it to the letter and , viola! , freed up the bearings and worked like a charm ! Awesome! Video was well made, easy to follow, you explained everything simply in a common sense way. Love it when I find something like that. Well done!! Needless to say, got you subscribed to.

Terrific job. This also saved me.
My bearing on top locked up which I was able to free by gently twisting with lock pliers.
    Small suggestion.
WD-40 is great as a penetrating oil but is not a lubricant. I used Lube Magic, a silicon lubricant similar in consistency to vaseline and marketed for pool (lubing rubber o-rings, seals, etc) on the bearing. It should (in theory) keep it from getting wet and rusting.

Heard a loud pop noise while vacuuming and the brushes stopped working for me. When I opened up the turbine, the bearings still looked good but upon closer inspection, the turbine fan blade had cracked almost in half! It turns out it is a press fit and needs to be tight to spin the rod from the brush head assembly. Thanks for the this video though as it is always nice to have someone else's walk-through and to know you are on the right track!

Spinning!!!!! Weeeeeeee. Thanks so much Doublewide6! After watching many of Hoover's videos, I was beginning to think that I wouldn't be able to fix this problem myself. I'm so glad I continued searching and found your video. I don't know why Hoover doesn't simply tell people about this easy fix, wait...yeah I do! I almost gave up a few times when things didn't want to come apart like they should, but I'm glad I stuck with it. And for the ladies who have long nails like me, I would suggest placing the screw at the top in first, before putting the plastic cover back on. I don't know why, but this screw kept falling down under the air turbine before I could get it back into place. I assume my nails were preventing me from getting as far down into the area like I needed to. Putting it in place, but not tightening it, prior to putting the plastic back on, solved this problem.
I'm so happy, I don't know what to do with myself! Lol There's just a wonderful feeling when you DIY it. I'm also happy to report, I didn't break one nail while do this repair!! :D
    Thanks again!

Excellent Video, so well detailed. My Hoover F6212-906 is a similar model and went off for repair, only to come back "Beyond Economical Repair, turbine seized, unable to un-jam and part is not available" no charge. So I searched for the part and found it is available but can't be delivered as I am outside USA.
Then I fortunately found this video. It gave me the confidence to pull the machine apart & strip the turbine down, treat it with WD40 and it unfroze just like you said it would.
Your step by step instructions were very clear, lots of methodical detail and a credit to you. Your explanation and information of what & why issues occur were extremely insightful. Saved me a fortune, untold gratitude to doublewide6.

Great video, but the underlying problem with most of these Hoover steam and turbo shampooers is the intake for the air-turbine which is that area just in front of the butterfly valve youi showed us. It can suck in the shampoo solution and get directly into the bearings causing them to rust. I re-routed my turbine intake to come from the top of the shampooer - so far, no rusty bearings and the brushes spin like crazy. Too bad I can't post pictures of the mod here, but thanks for sharing your fix.

When we got our cleaner, the Vax Dual-V (UK version), it hadn't been on the market long when the brushes jammed, so there wasn't much help on RUclips regarding this repair. Needless to say, I'm pleased I can finally fix this thing, without having to guess what's wrong. A great help with what looks a fairly simple fix. Thanks.

***** I can't believe how many people really appreciate this video. It must be one of the only ones of it's kind on RUclips.

doublewide6 , any chance you can look at my question above? Would love to get your feedback. "When I turn our brushes manually and then stop them, I can feel/hear the gearbox still turning. Do you think this means the gears are stripped? Our unit is only a few years old but I suppose when using plastic gears, anything is possible..."

Just a quick update... I followed this vid and the large fan was jammed, behind the gears. Took about 20 mins following this vid and now done 2 carpets with brushes spinning nicely. Lubed with silicon grease. Thanks again.

This repair was easier than I thought. I have an FH50050 model, but it's very similar. I figured... Worst case scenario, I take it to the repairman mostly disassembled. Mine had two extra long screws on the bottom of the unit that held the turbine in place. A pair of right angle needle nose pliers made this job a breeze. Thank you for posting this!

Very good instructional video. We just fixed our Vax All Terrain carpet cleaner following these steps. The turbine cogs seemed fine but clearing the filter seemed to do the trick. We couldn’t access the filter without taking it all apart.

I had a similar problem - brushes not spinning however, it was not due to rust or non-functioning bearings. When I fully opened up the assembly (not just removed as in your video) I found the actual turbine disc was cracked. Thus, not holding friction against the bearing shaft to spin the gears. Too bad every appliance companies use cheap plastic to metal connections that WILL eventually break. Thanks for the vid - it did show me how to remove the assembly.

Thank you very much for your help. You made it so easy. When the screwdriver didn't work, I got very nervous about taking the machine apart. I worked with you step by step and to my amazement, it worked. Thanks for making it so easy.

Thanks very much! We picked up someone's old Hoover (they were throwing it out) and the brush function wasn't working. Today I found your video, took the beast apart, and got it fixed. Not even the same model but they were similar enough I was able to figure it out. On mine, the shaft wasn't spinning at all. I had to completely take it apart, take the gears out, and grab it from inside with some pliers and force it free. Serious rust build up, I'm guessing. Anyway, I'm so glad you made this. Now my machine is working!

Excellent instructions!! My shampooer was a slightly different model but your video was easy to follow and make adjustments. I also had 2 jammed bearings and nothing moved initially. Once I cleaned them it is working perfectly again. I am a 70 year old woman and if I can follow this anyone can.

Used your video and tore mine all apart. No problem inside the motor. The lack of brushes rotation however was not the vacuum motor. In my case the auxiliary tools wire coiled hose had snapped off right at the connection to the main unit and vacuum was lost to the brushes drive motor.. It is glued in to the fitting so I had to improvise a new connection with tape, wire, and a hose clamp. The reconnect of that hose fixed the problem.

Thanks! You saved the day. The clear cover was not hooked under the front of the machine above the brush. That’s actually where the water draws into the machine.

Thank you for doing this video. What I thought was going to be a nightmare turned out to be a tempest in a teacup. The rod on the brushes had broken and I had to take the turbine gear assembly apart to get it out and repair it. Took about 15 minutes total. Thanks again.

Excellent video with great detailed explanations! I did everything you said very carefully but one thing you might want to show is taking the top cover off to inspect the turbine. Mine did not spin after doing what you explained so I took it apart again - much easier the 2nd time - and took the top cover off only to discover the impeller had cracked all the way to the steel shaft. Before I pulled the top cover I shot some air into the intake and noticed the impeller spin but the gears still barely moved. I thought that maybe the issue was that a lot of air was escaping from the intake as I didn't have a good seal. So, I knew I needed to replace the unit and, being the curious guy I am, I decided no more harm could happen so I pulled the top cover and viola!
Just thought I'd pass this on to you for future videos you may do.
Keep up the good work! Without your video I would not have easily known how to fix the machine.

Thank you for the video. I have a newer steamvac that has been pushed to the side in a storage closet for months waiting to be 'looked at' because one day while cleaning my carpets, the brushes stopped spinning. Little WD40 and working it in did it. Will be taking it apart to clear up everything else as well, but just the little bit of WD40 in the square hole was enough to make the brushes start spinning again! Thank you Doublewide6!
