  • The Chitimacha (/ˈtʃɪtɪməʃɑː/ CHIT-i-mə-shah; or /tʃɪtɪˈmɑːʃə/ CHIT-i-MAH-shə) are a group of Native Americans living in Louisiana's Southeastern Woodlands. The Chichimacha Tribe of Louisiana is a recognized tribe by the federal government. On Beauteche Bay, in St. Mary Parish, there is an Indian reservation inhabited by the Chitimacha people. A tiny portion of their precontact area remains their reservation. As the only tribe in Louisiana to retain portions of their ancestral territory, they have long inhabited parts of the Atchafalaya Basin, which is referred to as "one of the richest inland estuaries on the continent." They numbered roughly 1100 individuals in 2011.
