this thing is a beast, Behringer has really made quite a comeback. When I was a kid, they were the brand to avoid, but ever since they teamed up with Midas and Klark Teknik they've been KILLING IT. So glad I got this synth
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Thank you for posting. I received my Model D yesterday and started exploring its sounds. For those of us who are new to synthesis patching, an explanation of the inputs /outputs along the top of the unit, and the knobs/switches pertinent to them, would be a great boon.
Hey James. I have a video that's just gone live today going in depth with etc oscillator bank. I'll then have one on the mixer section, filter, envelopes, modulation. A whole series to come that I hope is helpful for you.
Great video. I just got my Model D today. You helped me big time thanks. ❤ I have mine attached to my Wasp. I’m loving the Behringer. I’ve got quite a few of their pieces and they haven’t let me down 😊
I think they're going to make a lot of people happy. As well of course pissing many people as there's plenty of people ready to shout at their computer screens. :)
Best sound demo to date Divkid, and as always good explanation for those that need it. Can't wait to get mine and connect it to Eurorack. Look forward to your next video in the series...
WOW, those envelopes are snappy. I just bought mine a few days ago and have yet to run it through its paces, but I know your videos are going be a great companion.
I did it on the first patch showing it just to show what was happening. But you're totally write it's not needed at all. I'll explain that in future videos.
I did think about just doing a load of blind test type videos "testing a new synth voice" series or something and not saying what it is. But I'd posted a picture of it coming in and I think with that more regular viewers/followers would have guessed and spilled the beans quickly.
It is, everyone should subscribe and correct that! haha. I got working with the MIDAS team in Manchester UK and did meet Uli very briefly as I was getting into a few things with the team over there.
Really nice appetizer as intro. I love the ultracrisp definition of the sound. For 300 bucks is a massive winner in my book. It will sell loads. Wating for the next videos. Cheers!
Hey divkid..it Sounds amazing ....i got a question ...i only want to use Sounds From my accoustic Instruments ....i Mixed the Sound of my Percussion and vocals in a Mixer , and send the summary to my loopstation....and From the loopstation i want to Go in the Behringer d ...i tried 2 hours , but i didnt get Any Signal in the Behringer ...how can i do this ....i Dont want to use Midi Sounds ......is this possible , at all ? Do i have the right synth ....?? 😂....there must be away ...maybe you can Help me .....🙏
You can use external in. Watch you don’t overload it. I tried my Wasp going in and it sounded great. I don’t know loopstation but I guess it could be any sound source going in. Also make sure to switch the external to on. I missed that at first.
I did lust after the RME voyager rack, but it was always out of my reach, now is hard to find too, takes up a fair space & if you want to connect it to your modular it means buying a couple of add on boxes, costing even more money & real estate. So this thing is IMO just as gorgeous, now available for about a 10th of the former's price is, small & can be slotted into your modular & has a selection of sockets for that. So its a dream come true. My ambition is to get one & eventually expand it with a few AJH modules for the extra features. I know some may laugh at me cos that's probably like me buying a Koenigsegg carbon fibre steering wheel for my Clio but still!
As with all my demos I never add any EQ, processing, compression to the module/unit on show. This is all just dry recording. Sometimes mixed with the kick drum in my Befaco HexMix before recording but no EQ used on that for those patches.
I'd like to see some more information about the things that this one has that the oriignal Moog hadn't. Like the (second?) LFO, the "Osc3/Filter EG" switch, "NoiseLFO", etc. And what you can use the in/outputs like the "1 V/Oct." for. I don' get that.
I just watched your video on the AJH Synth MiniMod system for FutureMusic. Is it just me or does the MiniMod has a better bottom end and filter sound? I mean the Behringer sounds great and costs as much as a single MiniMod VCO, but I really like the patching freedom you have with the MiniMod system.
Nice video.. sounds just like mine ;) The behringer Moog is supposedly based on the Moog Reissue, which is why it shares similar features such as the extra LFO.
Somehow I'm under the impression it's a replica of the reissue. Not sure whether it was comment by Uli or one of synthpro's videos..lol.. anyway, it's a great synth, which does for all I know sound just like a minimoog :)
Will this fit in the tip top audio z ears rack so I can mount it in a 19” rack? My plan is to get about 4 of them, and I’d like them all in 1 place mounted together I guess in other words, what’s the hp of this thing?
can you please explain to me how to hook my model d to my maschine mk3 im so sad i get it to work ive looked everywhere online for a solution and nothing it works cause the calibrating tone makes noise but thats it
Very good work, DivKid! Will you join the new Behringer competition? Make an instrumental with only Model D sounds. Information about the competition is still a bit cryptic, but I think that is what the competition is about, roughly.
There's no sync on the oscillators as per the original. That would have been a nice added feature. However Behringer did just announce the Neutron that's a dual 3340 oscillator with sync. I've been testing that and they sound good.
what's the build quality like? I used to have a behringer mixer and the build left a lot to be desired. clone, copy, whatever, it sounds great and that's really all that matters. for the price it seems like a no brainer to me and I'm very interested in picking one up (depending on how well it's built) cheers for the demos
doesn't feel like a cheap Behringer mixer you'll be used to. Especially the older stuff. Pots / knobs at least feel panel mounted and sturdy. Case is metal. No problems.
Sounds really good to me, and it looks pretty versatile. I've been reading many behringer hater comments since the D was was announced (mainly in Spanish synth fb groups) and honestly don't understand whats wrong about making such piece of gear and making it so affordable, and again, in terms of sound: is there any downside to point in the model-D?
I can understand where the hate comes from regarding the past decisions of the company. Not to say I agree in anyway, just I can see how from things that have happened and how people act online it's got to where it is.
I think it sounds pretty good. Im really interested in the poly chain feature like are people going to buy 4 of these and then have a 4 voice poly with 3 OSC per voice? thats sound pretty nice if it all works properly together.
+Heathcliff - I've thought about this but I'm not sure how well it would work unless each of the parameters corresponds to a midi cc. In other words, if you adjust the envelopes it needs to send the cc that corresponds to the F-Attck, F-Dcy, F-Sus, or you have to set each one manually on however many of these you have. This goes for every other parameter. The question is, do they send and receive cc, not just MIDI notes?
Great review. I want one :) It doesnt look like theres any presets or patches built in. Can you still send program changes from an external midi source (octatrack), or external usb midi source (ableton)? Quite an important thing for me to be able to recall patches while playing live.
no it's completely analogue, no recall, no MIDI control, no memory. You have to have a frantic "reset" of the knobs between patches live. But there's not that much to tweak so it's doable.
If patches are vital for you... DO NOT buy this synth. This is a copy of the KING of synths: the MINIMOOG. I have a Minimoog and I couldn't resist buying one of these little copies. I must admit these synths are for experienced synthesists OR people who want to explore sound. If you are used to just recall memory patches, this is not the synth for you.
I'm pretty familiar with the Minimoog, but I don't understand why the model D has LFO (Lo) ranges for Osc 1 and Osc 2. You can't route these as mod sources, so why would you ever want to set them up as LFOs?
Is it possible to send midi data from daw to model d. And by midi data i mean if i play a molody on my daw piano roll, can i get it to come out of the model d then loop it and play with the nobs?
I haven't touched any of that once. I'll move the main tune knob as I would with any instrument and that's it. You can see to get unison tuning I have move the second and third VCOs just a bit of centre but I don't mind that.
DivKidVideo I'd definitely like to hear one in person. RUclips compression isn't always the best for making an accurate comparison but at that price I feel like I'll be making room for it. Copying the original circuitry does seem to give it a more vintage sound than modern Moog synths.
Modern Moogs definitely aren't the old circuits but they're also lovely instruments in my experience. Different colours and tones to pull on like different era guitars.
I own a Voyager (and a lot of other synths and moogs) and all i hear on this new synth in all demos is a weired annoying metallic sound. Not always but 80/100 of the time. Like a moog sound is blended with this metallic cheap tone and it makes me angry. The other 20/100 yes it sound like a moog but for a few seconds . For a 300$ synth is not bad (filter is also good) but i would choose a lot of others in the same price range with less features but better sound. Most synths i bought under of 1000$ was a waste of money and sold them all, its better to have one 1500$ synth than 10 toys around. Before someone say "its only 300!" i would say this: I would more be afraid to throw 300$ on garbage than to buy a 3000$ superb lifetimes synth . I still have to hear it in a good studio but i dont think it will change my mind.
I also have a lot of other synths and Moogs (seven Moogs actually) . I bought a Behringer Model D on pre-order because it will serve a purpose in my studio. When I get it I'll give it a listen and if it does what I want it to do and it sounds the way I want it to sound then I'll be a happy person. If it doesn't, I won't. But I won't know that until it shows up.
I think until you have it in your own place in an environment you know well you'll struggle to really nail down the sound. It's tough. I agree with you generally Konstantinos, better to have things that serve you well then several things that don't. But I do think this will serve a lot of people well.
Doesn't look like it's possibly. The USB out on the Nektar is meant to be a controller for a computer right? There's no MIDI out so not sure it would work.
the manual is here if you want to look at it - media.music-group.com/media/PLM/data/docs/P0CQJ/MODEL%20D_M_EN.pdf - there isn't an arpeggiator on the unit though.
I can assure it's nothing to do with the AD / Audio Interface. Watch some of my others videos and see what the perceived general weight is from other devices and go from there. But there's no processing and issues with the interface. With resonant higher up there's no compensation for the low end loss. Which might be part of what you're hearing here.
All your videos have that specific sound to it. I'm just wondering what gear you use for conversion as I know there's a huge difference in quality - especially in the lower end depending on the AD used. Have tested quite many and if I knew which was used, then making my own conclusions based on it would be worth a lot as for instance when I'd like to aqcuire that Model D then I would have to order it, they don't sell it where I live.
It sounds great Ben! (Although you sound a bit croaky) ;-( How does the size of the knobs compare to other eurorack gear? They seem fiddly, but maybe that's just because I'm subconsciously comparing them to the minimoog.
I am a bit croaky, man flu, tried to swing some days off but my moaning and joking didn't go down well haha. I think that's just subconsciously comparing to a Moog. They're as spaced out or a fair bit more than euro modules generally. It looks/feels spacious in the rack.
New subscriber here. Very good review of the Behringer D. Having owned a Mini Moog D back in the day, it does a pretty good job of emulating the old Moog sounds. As for Eurorack, this is like 84U (a.k.a. 19" rack width)?
When measuring rack space "U" is rack units which is a measurement of height for rack gear like a 1U lexicon FX unit or 2U rack compressor. 84HP is horizontal pitch with is the measure of width. A standard 19" rack will fit 84HP in it. However modular cases can vary in width and but each euro rack row is always 3U high. So a 6U case would have two rows. The width of this is around 70HP (I'd have to check) so you could fit this and a couple of smaller modules into a standard case no problem. Hope that helps and thanks for subscribing.
Thanks for the clarification. I got my "U" and "HP" mixed up (old man). Excellent reply. Keep up the great work, I'm looking forward to your future videosl
@@DivKid Thanks for coming back to me! I mean how does the unit generate the CVs for the VCA? Are they software generated as in most modern analog synthesizers or are they generated by dedicated (Curtis SSM) chips or even (as in the real Mini) by circuits with discrete components?
I couldn't tell you, though I did read through the manual which mentions nothing. Are you asking as you're specifically looking for that Moog analog "snap"? Or something else?
@@DivKid Yes, I could not find anything written about this aspect. And yes, the MINI seems to be more definitite and precise I found out in my comparison: ruclips.net/video/YtwUcmA5It4/видео.html And if it was all software Behringer could take of the rediculously short actuator travel you have to control the attack phase which is really insufficient for targeted sound shaping at least at this point. They mounted the wrong pots.
There's extended version of the sounds used here going online daily at the minute and more in depth videos with explanations are to come. I just wanted to record a load of preview material to go with the verbal feature run down and as I have longer versions than I used here they are in a jam context.
I was patching in from other sequencers and modulation. Rather than using MIDI I used a modular sequencer and patched across the pitch and note on/off "Gate" information.
I want to hear Brass sounds, strings. In this link, you can see the original mini moog model d sheet patches www.synthzone.com/midi/moog/minimoog/MINIMOOG%20PATCH%20BOOK.pdf
Hi, nice!, what is your overall opinión of this? I think that for 299.99 there is no reason to NOT buy it. but... you touched the thing, let me know what your guts told you. Thanks.
my guts said it's good. I'm totally avoiding all politics around it. That's never held my interest in terms of this channel so I'll be presenting it for what it is, how it sounds, what the features are and some patch examples and modulation from other sources etc. I think for the price it's a winner. What do you think just with these quick patch jams?
I think that sounds pretty nice and very "Moogy". The interaction with eurorack, the MIDI implementation and the extra LFO make the thing so juicy. Seems thats this synth with a Korg Sq-1 and a decent delay can be intant happyness. Let's see the next chapter, thank you very much! BTW sorry about my english, cheers from Buenos Aires.
I owned an original Mini Moog model D, bought new in 1977. Long story short The B-D is more Moog sounding than the SE-02's I've heard on the internet. The B-D has REALLY had me going a few times and I've had one pre-ordered since last August. At this price I'll prolly end up with several poly chained. The SE-02 is very cool in it's own right but doesn't duplicate the original model D's sound as well. I've no hands on experience with the B-D but the VCO pots seem to function much like the original from what I've seen and that will be important to me, IOW, I need to detune VCO 2 just a tad sharp to VCO 1(I can't really duplicate what I'm going for with my Moog Sub37TE, close but not quite, the filter function doesn't quite get it either). I had a very specific sound that I've never been able to duplicate since my MM-D gave up the ghost. My Mini Moog Voyager did well and definitely sounded like a Moog but it wasn't a Model D. Those old Model D's were very special and more than just with the tone and fatness. I had the mod wheel pot die and absolutely could not find a suitable replacement even with the exact same stated value and Moog had gone out of business so when you needed a part it was impossible to find the exact proper one. That was my experience anyways. It's difficult to compare on youtube for obvious reasons but I saw one comparison between the B-D and the SE-02 and solely judging from that on sound, the B-D wins. I think people that are so excited about the B-D, as am I, are buying them hoping that they'll basically be a viable alternative to a Mini Moog model D which means that is absolutely ALL I/they want it to be because the originals were exactly what they should have been. That said, I never used mine with out an Echoplex as it was something that, IMHO, the MM-D needed. Those two together were amazing. I've a Moog Mini Fooger delay on my S37TE that works well and will use it but it's not an Echoplex. ;-) And as a Mini Moog model D was more than just tone and fatness the Echoplex was far far more than just echo. My .02.
Just looks very light and plastic. The colored plastic switches look especially cheesy to me. Missing the solid clunkiness of the original but that's part of the selling point I would imagine. Still an amazing buy. Like I said, I would grab one for sure if I had the need.
Maybe its RUclips, but this does not sound like a real Moog Model D. It's missing the girth and low end punch of the real deal. It does, however, sound better than the Sub and Subsequent 37! Still great for $220 (Musician Friend's discounts rule)
I'd agree all round with that. It's not the same. Nor is it the same as the AJH modules I love so much. But it's more vintage than modern Moog and for the price it's ridiculous!
fair enough. Full version of the jams going up very very soon so maybe you'll hear a little more. But I appreciate the openness from all angles here. Sounds as always are totally dry and unprocessed so should be a good representation of potential feel.
I figured as much from the settings...So perhaps it can do Moog and much more... Like the DM12 is much more than a Juno 106... I await any judgement on this until l see your full reviews. I know you will be unbiased and honest.
Ha ha....a recreation of one of the fattest analogue synths of all time, with which seasoned synthesists are saying sounds as good as the original.....and you say it sounds like a plugin
this thing is a beast, Behringer has really made quite a comeback. When I was a kid, they were the brand to avoid, but ever since they teamed up with Midas and Klark Teknik they've been KILLING IT. So glad I got this synth

Incredible value well done behringer!! Im sure this will be very popular
I'm sure it will be too.
Just got mine. First hardware synth. Got a lot of fun learning ahead!
I like it a lot. If the rest of Behringer's copycats sound this true to their original we are in for some great times ahead!

It sounds good to me! I look at it if it wasn't a clone and judge the sound that way. This is really a instant buy at the price.

Yes, just use the usb cable
Arp pattern at 5:59, love that!
the separate gate pattern for the filter envelope makes for some nice added accents to the whole thing.
DivKidVideo makes sense! I’m really slacking here; I gotta go play around with one at the store... let’s be real, I’m probably going to buy it.
haha! I saw one with wooden end cheeks added to the a MIDI keyboard to make a mini minimoog with the keyboard. That made me laugh.
can you do a video of an eurorack installation of this please? how much hp is? 60?
I actually filmed that last night.
oh nice i wait for this! thank you very much :)
How often do you have to calibrate/retune the unit? Does it drift much?
I haven't touched any of that once. I'll move the main tune knob as I would with any instrument and that's it. You can see to get unison tuning I have move the second and third VCOs just a bit of centre but I don't mind that.
How extensive is the MIDI implementation? Are any knobs (filter esp.) and switches sent/received do you know? Or is it simply notes and mod wheel?
simply the notes, no knob control over MIDI on this one.
OK, cheers.
That sounds like it has a really thick Moog sound, even when compared to my Sub 37.
Not that modern Moog like the 'phatty' or 'sub' ranges are based on the exact same circuits but I'd like to hear them A/B compared.
Is it possible to modulate the pitch with the envelopes?
Yes filter envelope can be a mod source for the oscillators.
thanks! Now I can't wait for mine to arrive! I don't expect it will challenge my Voyager but I'm prepared to be convinced.
Come back on this or a future video and let me know how they stack up. I'd be interested to know from a user perspective.
So I need all that other equipment behind the Behringer to make these sounds?
none of it, that's just where I choose to put it and film it.
I'm curious how this compares with the SE-02
me too, be good to get an AB comparison. Blind test would be good too.
The Roland to my ears sounds better and has a great sequencer. If you don't need a sequencer though save the money and get the D.
*wondering* How would I connect this to a Nektar LX61+? Is it even possible? USB to Midi adapter? I'm suddenly full of questions. LOL
Doesn't look like it's possibly. The USB out on the Nektar is meant to be a controller for a computer right? There's no MIDI out so not sure it would work.
I have a Behringer interface I wonder if I could patch it through the midi out on there. hmm?

Need more of that rubbery bass at 5:47 :)
ah that little bit of glide bending things around.
RUBBA BASS FTW!!!
GREAT SOUND EXAMPLES !
cool that you also patched some with Eurorack stuff!
cheers
can anyone explain how to master sync the arp on these things?
the manual is here if you want to look at it - media.music-group.com/media/PLM/data/docs/P0CQJ/MODEL%20D_M_EN.pdf - there isn't an arpeggiator on the unit though.
What AD (audio interface) did you use for this video? Couldn't really hear (or feel) the low end.
I don’t understand how you are getting these sounds. What are you patching the Model D out to?
It sounds great Ben! (Although you sound a bit croaky) ;-( How does the size of the knobs compare to other eurorack gear? They seem fiddly, but maybe that's just because I'm subconsciously comparing them to the minimoog.
I am a bit croaky, man flu, tried to swing some days off but my moaning and joking didn't go down well haha.
I think that's just subconsciously comparing to a Moog. They're as spaced out or a fair bit more than euro modules generally. It looks/feels spacious in the rack.
Ah well, I hope you're feeling better soon. There's been a lot of it about this Winter.
yeah all sorts, working in two schools and a college means I'm germ infested a lot of the time.
Keep up the great work, I'm looking forward to your future videosl
nice one thank you John.
Sounds phat. Can't fault it for the price, I mean really, it sounds phat.
:)

I'd like it better if your patches didn't require any external gear, so i could try to make same patches on mine...just a suggestion.
This exactly. Only him and about 4 people in Europe can follow this
Hi, just 1 question about the hardware of this machine. Does it feature real hardware envelope generators?
Thanks!
real hardware envelope generators? Do you just mean are they analog or digital?
@@DivKid Thanks for coming back to me!
I mean how does the unit generate the CVs for the VCA? Are they software generated as in most modern analog synthesizers or are they generated by dedicated (Curtis SSM) chips or even (as in the real Mini) by circuits with discrete components?
I couldn't tell you, though I did read through the manual which mentions nothing. Are you asking as you're specifically looking for that Moog analog "snap"? Or something else?
@@DivKid Yes, I could not find anything written about this aspect.
And yes, the MINI seems to be more definitite and precise I found out in my comparison:
ruclips.net/video/YtwUcmA5It4/видео.html
And if it was all software Behringer could take of the rediculously short actuator travel you have to control the attack phase which is really insufficient for targeted sound shaping at least at this point.
They mounted the wrong pots.
there's definitely lots they could have done like that across the range. Small tweaks that would have made things a lot better.
where's that punchy kick coming from?
Mutable Instruments Braids with the KICK mode.
Less than $300? So, YEAH! It and my Deepmind 12 as controller.
Yep.
Nice..
Cheers Ian.
So is this thing actually shipping now?
yes
Matt Greer Music last update I got from Sweetwater was March in the states, but I can see those across the pond are getting them now. So jealous!
I've seen few more around the EU seem to have them first.
Some verbal explanation of how you're patching would've been helpful. Nice sounding synth but your hands make those knobs look small.
There's extended version of the sounds used here going online daily at the minute and more in depth videos with explanations are to come. I just wanted to record a load of preview material to go with the verbal feature run down and as I have longer versions than I used here they are in a jam context.
I see a mod for individual osc v/oct in my future :P
that would be cool.
It is a great thing
unexpected nice¡
cheers
are u patching from other synths ?
I was patching in from other sequencers and modulation. Rather than using MIDI I used a modular sequencer and patched across the pitch and note on/off "Gate" information.
I want to hear Brass sounds, strings. In this link, you can see the original mini moog model d sheet patches www.synthzone.com/midi/moog/minimoog/MINIMOOG%20PATCH%20BOOK.pdf
I'm sure I can add that to my to do list for you.
Thanks for the reply Buddy!
This, SQ-1 and a delay pedal is super fun. Nice little compact rig. Definitely.
Ariel Raguet Your English is great. I can’t wait for these to be in stock everywhere. Might be a long time...
I know they're shipping, to where first I'm not sure though but a few people have them now it seems.
Model D or SE-02??...
I don't have an SE-02 here to compare.
My .02.
Looks cheesy but sounds great. Amazing for only $300. If I didn't already have a Studio Electronics MIDI Mini I'd jump at it.
looks cheesy? In what way? Like the original Model D looks cheesy?
Just looks very light and plastic. The colored plastic switches look especially cheesy to me. Missing the solid clunkiness of the original but that's part of the selling point I would imagine. Still an amazing buy. Like I said, I would grab one for sure if I had the need.
The thing is made from metal and wood...
...and plastic.
metal case, metal panel (possibly I need to check) and I wonder if the sides are "faux wood" or real wood. Possibly just fake wood IE plastic.
Very Intrigued... But it didn't give Moog feels like my Erebus does...
fair enough. Full version of the jams going up very very soon so maybe you'll hear a little more. But I appreciate the openness from all angles here. Sounds as always are totally dry and unprocessed so should be a good representation of potential feel.
I should also say I haven't made "classic" Moog bass sounds as I just played around with no intention early on and hit record.
I figured as much from the settings...So perhaps it can do Moog and much more... Like the DM12 is much more than a Juno 106... I await any judgement on this until l see your full reviews. I know you will be unbiased and honest.
exactly. DeepMind 12 is great for pads, built FX are good and it sits nicely in a mix and easy to work with.
haha "the politics"
Screw Moog over their overpriced products. This model D makes it so affordable for everyone.
certainly the opposite view, or a harsher view maybe than some have. Definitely a polarising product.
Sounds like a plug in to me
fair enough, there's lots of good and bad plug ins and a huge range so different people will take that differently.
Ha ha....a recreation of one of the fattest analogue synths of all time, with which seasoned synthesists are saying sounds as good as the original.....and you say it sounds like a plugin
Ross Henderson
I guess my speakers were bad, because with my headphones it sounds pretty good finally
