Will Trudeau’s EV mandate kill Canada’s auto sector?

  • In a recent column, economist Ross McKitrick argues that government subsidies and mandates are driving EV production and adoption, but high costs will lead to losses for automakers, with Canada’s 2035 mandate for all new light-duty vehicles to be electric or hybrid potentially causing long-term economic harm unless EV production costs decrease significantly. McKitrick joined True North’s Andrew Lawton to discuss.

I wouldn’t be to concerned of the automotive industry in Canada. It’s the consumer forced into technology that is extremely expensive to initiate an investment in.
A decent gasoline or diesel vehicle in Canada can last 20 years , with many of them outside, in harsh environments. Being trapped in to owning these vehicles is a risky venture, with unknown risks and we would expect our electric vehicles to last 20 years with out battery replacements or major replacements. Not having a garage to park these vehicles in, leaving them exposed to humidity and snow and cold, with wind blowing in blizzards getting moisture in and onto electrical connections, and not having a battery sit in a fridge at -40 for months on end and years of use, is just a scary thought being forced into more financially unstable situations and adding more inflation to homes in Canada with unknown repairs waiting.
Plus , understanding the components to a battery, you better be able to mine the raw materials in democratic countries and in allied countries. Not communistic or authoritarian or warring countries, to support the material for batteries

I don't know if Trudeau's EV mandates will kill Canada's EV sector, but Biden's EV mandates sure did kill it in the USA. This is the single biggest reason, {if not the ONLY reason), I will definitely not vote for Biden. The truth is due to war and the simple fact that oil isn't renewable, everything will be more expensive. The fact is that governments use the 'green' label not to scare people but the truth is that the pipe is running dry. The tax was a little bit harsh yet perhaps, necessary to shift people's minds. The new government will have to turn this tax into an incentive, failure to do this means big geopolitical issues.

People, especially young ones, cannot afford the Downpayment to buy a Home, does anybody with even a modicum of functioning Grey-Cells in their Head believe , that Generation is buying an insane expensive EV?
They, like many of us older Folks, start out buying CHEAP second/third hand Cars.
The very nature of EV maintenance will prohibit EVs becoming a viable Used Car option.
And it’s not only young People, how about Retirees? Contrary to popular believe not every Pensioner owns a Vacation Property in Florida, it’s called Reality!
