Augsburg became a city in 1909 and is the third largest city in Bavaria, with over 290,000 inhabitants after Munich and Nuremberg. The name of the city, which is one of the oldest in Germany, goes back to the 15th century founded Roman army camp and the later Roman provincial capital "Augusta Vindelicorum" back. The medieval Augsburg was surrounded by large fortifications and the continuous city wall, of which many parts are still preserved, including the Fünfgratturm or the Wertachbrucker Tor.
With its unique historic water management system, the city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2019.
The "Augsburg City Gates"
To protect Augsburg from robberies and looting, built city walls with upstream water-filled ramparts. Thus, the former imperial city was passable only through 11 gates, of which five are still preserved today.
Tower guards patrolled the gates, watching for fire and other dangers.
"The Jakober Gate", is still connected to a part of the old city wall and is assigned to the international Gothic.
On the other hand, "The Bird's Gate" stands as a soloist, so to speak. Both offered access to the east of the city.
"The Red Gate" was the southern gateway to the city and virtually predetermined by the Roman Via Claudia. All goods and travelers, who came from Tyrol and faraway Italy, came through the small village Haunstetten through this gate into the city. The Red Gate was part of the former Augsburg city fortifications and was not demolished during the demolition of the city wall in the 19th century. It is located in the south of Augsburg city center. The name is derived from the red color of the tower, which he had in the Middle Ages and has received in the course of renovation in the 20th century again. Together with the bridge, the aqueduct, the front gate and the bastion and the moat, the gate formed the "Red Torwall complex", which has survived in essential parts to this day.
"The Wertachbrucker Gate" was formerly a customs gate, later a fortification and in 1805 Napoleon even moved into the city here.
"The Fischer Gate" was once the gateway for the socially weaker fishermen from the north of the city.
For centuries the "Augsburg City Wall" was the border between inside and outside. It gave the citizens of Augsburg protection and their own identity and represents an impressive building that was worthy of the former Free Imperial City of Augsburg. Since the city was founded by the Romans over 2000 years ago, Augsburg is protected by ditches and walls. Over the centuries, these were further expanded and strengthened until they included in the middle of the 15th century as a closed city wall also the Jakobervorstadt. Already at that time, the fortress city of Augsburg was considered difficult to take. Although Augsburg has no coherent wall ring more, because large parts of the city walls were removed during the expansion of the city in the 19th century. But there are still about four kilometers of city walls. Today it is part of our history, a recreational area in the city and a place of cultural encounter. It is important to preserve our city wall for future generations.
