I'm looking to buy this same bass but in a 5 string, that's all I play now is 5ers. And I'm mostly only using my fretless basses in two bands. I already have the Ibby Portamento FL5 and the Ibby Workshop SR-SC-805, single cut-fretted 5er. Plus a custom, fretless 5 Carvin that I love. I was gona buy a new, SRH505 Fretless, semi-hollow a few weeks ago. I also own a semi-acoustic, Godin A5 Ultra Fretless but it weighs a ton for gigs, so it stays home alot. Ibanez is doing some real nice basses from the WorkShop series. Just feel that I love my fretless Portamento and Custom Carvin tones, so thinking about this SRH505 as a new fretted bass for gigs. The SR805SC-fretted has the stock, 2-Bartolini soapbar pups and I'm very happy with its' tone. So I gig it alot too. Just want to see how the Piezo-style AeroSilk pups works in this bass. I do like how the SRH505-fretless sounds, so still leaning that way for now. Nice walking lines there. I'm in two,3 and 4 piece, restaurant bands that throw me alot of solo's and though I can do walking bass lines well thru the tunes, I kinda need to learn better solo bass lines for those moments when I solo. I'll watch your vid more for some ideas. FINALLY, how are you still liking this Ibanez bass? Some have had neck issues with theirs. Like that thumbrest too. But the Low B usually serves as that task on my basses thru most of my songs, lol. peace, e.
ernieD2 in my experience, this blows the portamento FL5 out of the water. Again, IME after comparing the two extensively at a local Sam Ash. The SRH has a straight forward jazz tone with that feel of an upright bass. I get that with the Portamento but more electric than “upright.”
Well, I'd sure like to try on then. Because the Portamento having the Piezo-style pickup with it's own Volume/Tone knobs seems it could cover the SRH tone. But I still have the two electronic pups with separate knobs to add/take out as much as needed to blend. I mostly use the Piezo pup with slight bit of bridge pup to get a very nice tone. And I've used the Piezo solo in my Godin A5 Ultra FL. The magnetic pup in that bass helps thicken up the Piezo. Maybe I don't know how to dial in a Piezo pup solo for a good tone. But this SRH having only the AeroSilk pup would force me to have to learn to dial it in solo. Bass tone is such a subjective thing, I can't agree the SRH would blow the Porty out of the water, as the Porty seems more versatile for the style of music I perform. I imagine the SRH would work great in a mostly all jazz, big band, etc style with that upright-ish tone. I don't have the luxury of performing that music, which I really enjoy, very often in the variety bands I am in. Thanks for your reply. peace, e.
