Yes my scale is same with sirenne in place of vibrato hahahaah. I can't make it so fast yet. The joy and love to the vibrato isn't appearing yet apperantly
Scales are indeed fun and they do bring joy! I love this guy!!Vengerov is not only a great violinist and artist, but a great teacher also! I have enormous admiration and respect for artist-teachers like him.
I've read the comments before watching the video. People wrote about how beautiful his scale was. It got me so confused. What do they mean a "beautiful" scale ? Then, I watched the video... What a beautiful scale 😍
@@violetabighiu223 Yes, that the beauty of it. He plays a "simple" scale, but just by adding dynamics and changes in vibrato he made it sound so beautiful !
Thank you for this. Maxim Vengerov is one of the very best violinists of a generation, so any advice from him is a privilege to receive! Incredible how he remains so relaxed while playing, a bit like breathing life into the instrument.
OMG! He brought tears to my eyes playing just scales. I've just been practicing, but now I have to get back to my violin and play scales. Wow! Phrasing A major.💖
Whoever named this did it wrong. As he says at the end this is "something about vibrato". Whoever came here to get a comprehensive guide (in 5 minutes??) Will be a little bit disappointed. However if you already know how to produce a steady vibrato this is a reminder on what a joy is actually to do it well and how you should approach it with your soul and joy. Liked it, it's not the thecnical video I expected from the title but it's still inspiring for advanced and professionals
What a beautiful full sound he makes. Every time I practice I start by watching this video to slow myself down and try to follow exactly what he is doing. He makes it look easy but it's very hard to achieve his relaxation and still get an intense sound.
Bravo! Never have I heard a violin played with such genuine passion and pure heartfelt emotion. Maxim, you surely bring tears to the eyes of the violin gods and firmly cement your place among the greatest virtuosos that have ever played this soulful instrument. You have inspired me immeasurably.
Nice to see a violin expert who is not anti-shoulder rest. My partner and I tested the sound of violins played with and without a shoulder rest similar to Vengerov's. When the violin rested directly against the shoulder the tone was less resonant. Shoulder rests improve the sound. It's a no-brainer.
This is the exact thing I needed for violin. I am not a violinist but I can get notes out of it. I couldn't figure out how to do the vibrato. Thanks! Nice of you to address things for us beginners.
@@NYGGJELEBEITE You are right - I've just checked some videos of Anne Sofie Mutter. I guess big artists can have it customized. When I was a student, I never thought it could be done.
I would love to hear Maxim Vengerov explain how he teaches vibrato and what he thinks about arm/wrist/finger vibrato and maybe even combinations of arm and wrist/finger vibrato. Anyone has seen him teach this?
I don't think he teaches vibrato. His students are advanced. They know vibrato. He tells them how to use it to serve the pieces. Well, that's what I think happens. Love and peace!
@@dianal.1279 thanks for your answer. I am not referring to basic skills. In my understanding there are different schools of vibrato and even among the best of the best violinists I can see differences in their vibrato technique, and yes, they do talk about it. Of course, there is the question of when to use it and how. The 'how' can refer to the basic parameters of amplitude and speed, but there is something else I refer to: while some seem to use only or mainly arm vibrato, others use some wrist vibrato (integrated/merged with arm vibrato or not). Others talk about finger vibrato, which personally I do not see fit and useful but maybe it is for others. It might maybe be more useful in certain types of folk music (probably worth a debate). In the words of Heifetz: 'Vibrato... is part of each individual musical personality, something one is born with…expressing one's temperament.' I am not sure whether we are borne with it, I am convinced that we can change it significantly through practice, but I think it is true that each violinist has his/her very personal technique and use of vibrato. This is the level of reflection I am interested in.
First look at the position of his left thumb, it is well above the finger board with the violin neck resting on the skin Web between thumb and index finger. This allows maximum speed and control. He also leans his back. What he said about not holding the violin is absolutely correct and it is a beautiful sound
Left thumb position in relation to the neck depends on the length of the thumb and fingers. Fingers must be in the optimal shape and then the thumb lands where it lands. Mine sits under the neck as my thumbs are unusually short.
Yes, but i have a question: How To Produce & Change Vibrato??? He only shows how beautiful it is his vibrato, but does`nt teach how to do it. The one who titled the video it is wrong.
@@petroffma I think youre both right in a way. Because if you came here as a beginner who doesnt really know how to do vibrato you definitly came to the wrong place but when you are already a decent violin player and you just want to take your hobby to another level and get in the mindset of an virtuoso you can benefit from this video.
I have a strange issue. I have worked on variety and control of vibrato in practice but when I perform it becomes much easier to use vibrato but all that control goes. I end up with a uniform speed and width. Do you have any ideas on how to maintain control when performing?
@@sahirsharma4336 Comfort for the way he plays/holds the violin. Some players just prefer it that way. EDITED TO ADD: I left out the other vital reason for why some go for a centre chinrest - injury. I actually think that may be the reason for maestro Vengerov. IIRC he did have an injured shoulder at one stage and this centred chinrest may help relieve or prevent recurrence.
Unfortunately I don't quite know but someone else commented (I think on another video where Vengerov has black-wound strings) and apparently they're a special artist-only brand ! They sound very punchy and rich, I hope they release them to the public!
I don't know about practicing scales out of context. I mean really, when a scale appears in Bach's music it has a purpose and to me is very dramatic. Especially the descending scales that appear in the Two-Part Inventions. As for vibrato, the older I get, the harder it is to control. I wish I could produce a pure tone completely with out vibrato. Even Leopold Auer said it is entirely over used.
This has got to be the most beautiful scale I've ever heard.
That’s exactly what I was gonna mention.
He even plays the simple scale so beautiful.
It's because the timbre of the sound he produces is gorgeous. I love to hear him playing mozart, that's the reason.

It's the vibrato united with crescendos and diminuendos

if you practice scales on your instruments,
don't practice it, try to play it.

The second half of Last Rose of Summer uses scales instead of notes, a scale can be looked at as a distinct object

How do you do vibrato on the 4th finger? Is the finger flat, or curved?
Curved. My pinkie is narrow and weak, so I support it with the 3rd that vibrates along with the 4th.
I can't keep my eye off of the gold E string on his violin :)

Vibrato only with hand / wrist?
