I feel like you are speaking directly to me in your videos. To think an accomplished violinist such as yourself takes the time to post videos to help others. I am in awe of you. I am a senior who has just retired and have taken up the violin. The violin is an instrument where you can create a ballet even if you can't dance. I thank you sir for helping others with your expertise.
Wow! It is very heartening to see someone of your stature being so generous and kind with your time and wisdom. You are not only a great violinist and teacher, but you are also a great human being. Thank you.
OMG!!!!!! I was listening to one of Perlman's music on my ipod then I switched to RUclips to listen to it, BUT THEN I found this video!!!!! Perlman teaching me music? Me?? I feel like I am privileged!!! I cannot believe that I can have access to SUCH knowledge so easily and for freeeeeee!! Thank you!!!!!!!!! MERCI!!!
This is a lesson that everyone that plays a stringed instrument - and not just the violin - should learn. Vibrato is a wonderful form of expression. On a violin the vibrato may be a movement that it in line with the strings, on a classical guitar it is the same, on an electric guitar typically the strings are moved sideways but the idea is the same. It's a fantastic tool to add character to whatever you're playing. Play with passion and enjoy. Thank you Itzhak for the lesson!
Thank you Mr. Perlman. You know that many of people will improve their playing just by listen and follow your tips on videos. Your knowledge is a gift from God thank you for share it. God bless you!! Greetings from a Colombian violinist in Topeka, Kansas.
Mr. Perlman, once again, touché on a technical and artistic tool that all musicians should put to exercise (including singers) :^) As you so well know there is too often a mismatch of the vibrato to the character of the music. Thank you sir for the musical tools that keep it fresh to the ear as it is written, "Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise."
It's wonderful that you decided to put all this tips for violinists for free on youtube. Thank you very much Itzhak! You're one of the best violinists in the world!
Inspired by your rendition of Thais' Meditation I am beginning the violin at age sixty four. As a singer songwriter for many years with the guitar I feel that the violin opens up a whole new world of expression. I love this instrument! I just want you to know how deeply touched I feel by what you bring to music and I pray the the Lord will give you the strength and peace you need to continue many years touching and blessing lives as you have mine. Hope to see you in Schenectady in March.
Thanks you Mr Perlman one of these days I will learn to do vibrato. BTW you have the sweetest smile it makes me smile all the time inside and out. Thanks for that also
Thank you for taking the time to make a informative upload. I have been a working musician for over 40 years and have recently taken up the violin, ironically I never looked at the violin as a instrument that would suit me, as a younger man, I have found it to be a refreshingly rewarding instrument capable of giving me more expression than my own instrument of career, I can certainly see how a man can make it a life and choice career more rewarding than a person could perceive, I will certainly keep vigil on your uploads, again thanks very much
Can’t thank you enough for taking the time to post these videos, I can’t afford a teacher having a badly paid job so these videos explain a lot thank you again
I DID NOT know Itzhak had a youtube channel. Find of the day. I'm sitting here holding my violin trying to learn Ode to Joy. its been two weeks since I started. Lindsey Stirling and Itzhak were my two inspirations for learning the violin.
Thank you so much for your information Mr. Perlman.I love listening to you and Mr. Stern.I used to play many many years ago and I am getting back into playing. Thank God for all of the knowledge that you and so many others are sharing to us, your fans and admirers.
Just discovered the helpful videos by this amazing violinist whom I grew up listening to on CBC radio! So excited to learn more. Thank you, Mr. Perlman, for sharing your expertise and immense knowledge with all of us who love to play the violin! And I don't feel looked down upon (2ndviolinist) - I feel privileged!
Mr Perlman...it feels so great, both to see and hear you play. It´s magic how it goes right through your heart. Then also...when hearing you play, I just wanna sell my violin on ebay. It´s just a piece of wood in my hands.
This video was a surprise. I came here accidentally but I'm glad I did. I didn't use vibrato in my playing days but there wasn't much need for it playing dance music in small combos. I rarely took my bow to the type of gigs we played. But I love what the young bass players are doing on youtube.
Amazing! I had a teacher which I was frustrated with because she always had me vibrato like a madman on every note, super short super fast vibratos. My favorite piece of music in the world is the theme from Schindler's List, and all those beautiful vibrato styles give Itzhak's version so much more emotion and character than any version I've ever heard. So many of the "first chair" players in my university orchestra also had only a single vibrato style (the fast and narrow).
I kind of understood the concept when i learned it, but looking at this video, I can see how this has a wider range of factors. Thank you, Mr. Perlman.
I love your very informative and interesting videos. Your students are very blessed by you. I’m a pianist and I have 5 students. I send your videos to them so they can learn and apply new musical ideas to their thinking. Thank you. You are such an inspiration to so many people. God bless you.
It is a pleasure to meet a great Maestro from Ian Qld Gladstone Australia, Mozart would be your no.1 pupil if he was alive, your a great teacher, keep it up
I just keep looking at his hands. It's so hard to imagine such ordinary looking hands being the same ones that coax out the most amazing sounds from the violin.
Sir Itzhak, first of all im very much happy to see you talking to the new violinist or students, because i couldn't find this video earlier, and beside everything your explaination on vibrato is wonderfully clear, im just intermediate violinist and i wish someday i can play on expert level, its really heard to achieve the level you have achieve , but i wish if i could do it some day..thankss alot for being so helpful.. Blessing
Mr. Perlman, I think it's very cool that you post youtube videos. Hilary Hahn also posts the occasional RUclips videos. i would like to thank you for taking the time out of your day to share your knowledge with us.
How cute are you!!! God sent this to me and I haven't learned vibrato very much yet..so much easier in guitar or cello than violin. Altho I've never had cello lessons..so hopefully have done it correctly. You are the BEST!
Thank you, once again, for your wonderful instructional videos. Thank you also for your brilliant commentary in the recent JH documentary. You have meant so much to me throughout my musical life.
thank you so much sir. we are much indebted. I have always looked up to you. I may never have the privilege to ever speak to you..let alone have a class. Thank you so much. please post more and more.
What everyone acknowledges here is true about the Big -Hearted Maestro. The only other comparable ( semi -comparable ) teaching is Isaac Stern in ' Mao to Mozart ' That's a video EVERY violinist should see. Oh, I do want to add to the advice given here ( CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS ?? ). Two tips from Mssr. Galamian on vibrato : 1. Put the scroll against a wall to practice vibrato. 2. Let the left arm hang from the fingerboard. T-T-That's ALL Folks !
I try to play as you do! I love how you play Seitz concerto - I am learning it and will do my best to be as close to your playing as possible, as you play most beautiful!
I am a 15 year old violinist I have been playing violin for 10 years but the problem is I don't know the notes. When I wanted to play schindlers list and por una cabeza my music teacher in school said "no way.that's impossible.you can't play them.you don't know the notes"but now by watching Itzhak Perlman I can play them.you know I don't do anything.when I play the violin it comes to my mind and I can't control my fingers. It sounds like I am thief who steals Itzhak Perlman's music but my finge
Wow at first I dissagred with his statement "vibrato being an underused tool", but when he started explaining what he ment by it I was amazed about how much he shared how it could vary so much.
It's a fabulous lesson on vibrato! And I'm a composer. What you have to say is useful to all musicians and music-lovers. Regarding the video, Maestro, may I suggest that you put the camera on an even plane with your face. Currently, the camera's upward angle creates the "Lilliputian" effect: where you look big staring down on us little people. A level camera would put us on the same plane and create more effective communication with your audience.
MR. PERLMAN,HONOUR TO MEET YOU AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR TUTORIALS. I WAS TAUGHT THAT VIBRATO WAS GENERALY OVERDONE. NEVER TO USE VIBRATO UNLESS YOU NEEDED TO EXPRESS SOMETHING IT WAS INTRODUCED TO ME LATE IN MY FIRST YEAR AND SOMETHING ABOUT A BANDAID ON THE THUMB OF LEFT HAND TO REMIND YOU NOT TO STRANGLE THE NECK. THE BEST TRICK I KNOW OF IS TO PLACE AN ARTGUM ERASER IN THE CROTCH OF THUMB OF LEFT HAND AND THIS IN TURN SEPARATES V OF THUMB FROM BEING TOO DEEP INTO VIOLIN NECK. THE OTHER IS HINGE LEFT PALM TO RT. UPPER BOUT OF VIOLIN TOP PLATE. I HOPE IM ON COURSE AS I AM TEACHING MYSELF FROM VIDIOS OVER U TUBE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SHARING OF YOUR EXPERTISE. I LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR TEACHINGS.

It is indeed wonderful that Mr. Perlman take the time to do these. What a warm, wonderful human being and great Master. May God Bless you always, Sir!
Wow! It is very heartening to see someone of your stature being so generous and kind with your time and wisdom. You are not only a great violinist and teacher, but you are also a great human being. Thank you.
"I personally find that vibrato is the most underused tool for music making."
Spoken like a true romantic!
OMG!!!!!! I was listening to one of Perlman's music on my ipod then I switched to RUclips to listen to it, BUT THEN I found this video!!!!! Perlman teaching me music? Me?? This master doesn't have to share his tips with us, but he does. What a great guy
What an amazing gift these videos are! Thank you Mr. Perlman.

I tried it. It's a nice effect; especially if you uniformly increase (or decrease) the frequency of the pulses.

Agreed! Would love to have him for a teacher in just one class. Or just to hear him talk about violins.
Wow at first I dissagred with his statement "vibrato being an underused tool", but when he started explaining what he ment by it I was amazed about how much he shared how it could vary so much.
Super succinct explanation of what vibrato is all about . . . thank you sir! :-)

seeing him live soon!
Thank you!
אני אוהב את ההגשה שלך למוסיקה, נהנה מאוד מהנגינה שלך! אמנם אני חובבן ובעיקר מנגן על אורגן להנאתי, אך שואב השראה מהאנרגיות שלך!
