It wasnt just a test, but also an opportunity for the Lord to teach Abraham. Abraham needed to choose whether he was going to be obedient or not. Our choices always change us, and set us on a path. The Lord was preparing Abraham for a very important mission as the Father of Israel and an ancestor to Christ. Furthermore this story helps teach us about Christ, and how difficult it was for God to sacrifice HIS OWN son. Abraham, with this new understanding, was better prepared to raise his descendants as God's people. Life is hard and many of us have suffered or been abused. If we choose to keep trying to be good though, even our worst struggles can strengthen us and give us wisdom and experience to bless others. That has been my experience.
A father gave his little boy a puppy and the little boy loved that puppy with all his heart. But one day the father ordered his little boy to kill the puppy and burn the body. The good little boy was willing to do so but then the father said he was only joking. It was all in fun. A kitten appeared and the little boy killed that kitten in place of his puppy. He was first up to experience God and then the revelation he received would be passed down throughout all generations even down to us today. This being the case, God had to try his faith so that it can be proven that he was worthy of becoming the father of many nations in whose line the Messiah would come. Remember that God called Abraham from a wicked, sinful nation and sent him out so that he can reveal himself to him. These tests that God put Abraham through was not for him (he knows all), but for Abraham to be tried and for his faith to grow. A major part of God’s revelation in our lives is through the trials and tests we go through and how we endure. Through each test we become stronger in faith and in mind and soul which helps us to navigate through life with fresh revelation from God as well as his peace becoming our driving force. (We live life on levels and arrive in stages). God was trying to show Abraham who he is, and that he does not require these wicked sacrifices. It was a test for Abraham’s faith and loyalty to God. Abraham being willing to give up of the one thing he’d been praying for the longest (a son) showed his faithfulness. Naturally as human beings when we ask God for things so wholeheartedly, we become complacent and can even begin to forget God once he grants us our heart’s desires. This test as well as what happened to Job in the book of Job was meant to solidify their continued faith and reliance on God in both good and the bad situations. It was also through Abraham’s seed that Jesus Christ, the Messiah would come. This entire event is also parallel to Christ’s eventual death and resurrection, which is a lot to break down... notice, in the original text it says that Abraham tells Isaac that God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering...This was a reference to Christ. When Isaac is given the wood to carry, it is parallel to Christ carrying his own cross. In the original story Abraham traveled THREE DAYS journey before the place of sacrifice was revealed to him. This three days is equivalent to the three days in which Christ died and was resurrected. Isaac was resurrected in Abraham’s mind once God reappeared to him during the sacrifice.
I mean in Abraham’s position he knows God is all powerful and can do anything. If you were in the position where you know God does exist and he could wipe you out in a second, and he ask you to sacrifice your son, you could believe that God could easily bring back your son. Perhaps Abraham thought that. He was confused after all why his loving God would ask him to sacrifice his son he prayed for, for so long. Perhaps he thought God had a plan and it would be alright I’m the end for both him and his son.
