- Another jazz bass pickup comparison this time on my Sire Marcus Miller V5 jazz bass.
Sire stock pickups vs. EMG J style pickups.
For the sake of comparison and to make a clear picture of sound difference, I didn’t use any eq or compression.
Bass: Sire MM V5
Strings: FAT-BEAMS 40-100
Cubasis 3
The EMG's sound hotter and this adds to their perceived warmth. However, it would have been an interesting comparison to boost the gain on the stock pickups just to see how they compare in actual tone spectrum, to the EMG's. Nevertheless, an interesting video, thank you for taking the time to produce it.
I say it’s a toss up, they both sound great👍🏿
I think the Sire pickups are killer 🔥
I have a Sire V7 vintage. I installed the EMG J5 pickups and a BTS EQ system. Huge upgrade. Less knobs more tone.
Sounds great! Sire V7 vintage is one of my favourite basses. I’m curious to hear the tone with the upgrade you made
Love EMG pickups. I notice that my basses do not need much tone to sound bright. 👍
Yes that’s a personal preference. And also EMGs add more definition to the sound in general.
I have a sire jazz too , and like you I'm using Fat-Beams 45-105 they add so much bite and snap to this bass even the stock pickup sounds good ....
Thanks for your comment. FAT-BEAMS are fantastic. If you have seen my next video in which I have added compression and eq, you can see that it added even more flavour to the sound of my Sire.
@@majidalizadeh9354 Yes , this EMG sound good too , are they active ?
@@hippoferd yes that’s EMG J style and active. I also installed EMG J style on my Fender AVRI 75 jazz bass together with Bartolini XTCT preamp. They sound amazing and close to Marcus Miller’s slap tone. Hopefully soon I will make a video of that bass too.
Nice playing btw!
@@AllAboutBasses thanks for your nice comment 🙏🙏
I would say if you don't have a sire base and you want a similar sound, the EMGs are cool but if you have a sire base that already has sire pickups in it, just keep the sire pickups there actually a bit better in my opinion anyways
@@sbentsen2714 thanks for watching and for your comment 🙏🙏
Muy buenas las EMG. Me sorprendió.
Thanks for watching 🙏 Yes they sound really good 👍
I don’t notice a major difference in sound. Maybe a bit more output with the EMGs but that’s it.
On the first comparisson both flat settings, I noticed that all knobs (TVV) are not the same in settings.
Thanks for your comment. They are the same. All the knobs are all the way up in the first comparison (slap). The reason you see the knobs slightly differently is because when I was tightening the knobs on the pots after I installed EMGs, I fixed them on a different point. But again they are all the way up in both Sire stock pickups and EMGs.
@@majidalizadeh9354 ah orayt gotcha! Appreciate sire
The EMGs sound too bright for me...
In the next video I added a bit of post eq and compression to the same bass line. It smoothened the EMG sound and made it more pleasant in my ear. Please let me know what you think now:

Fair. But when it comes to mixing, typically better to roll off frequencies than boost frequencies that aren’t there. You’ve got more options this way 😎
The EMGs have more definition and growl!!!!! I might have to put some in my 2016 Sire V7 5!!! What preamp did you install in place of the Sire preamp?
I agree with you about EMGs characteristics.
If you buy EMG J set, it includes pickups as well as preamp (pots, battery connection and wires). You need to buy suitable knobs and a battery separately though.
So another words he’s not running a preop he’s running volume volume tone as the pickups are internally active with a preamp
Using 25K pots
Did the pots that came with the EMG fit the hole of your sire bass ? I mean : are the holes on the sire standart american or asian ?
What hole? Do you mean the hole on the control plate or are you talking about the control cavity? I didn’t have any issue with installing the electronics.
@@majidalizadeh9354 Yes the hole on the plate , very often the asian made have smaller holes (squier or fender japan need a little bit of drilling to fit the pot).
@@hippoferd actually I bought a new control plate. I didn’t even check if the EMG pots would fit in the holes of stock control plate.
@@majidalizadeh9354 interesting, I'm looking to change the pickups too , I love this bass so much that it deserve an upgrade, so it's quite easy to do ....
@@hippoferd well one thing to consider is that the routing holes between the pickup cavities and the control cavity were too small for the sockets (I mean the sockets on the pickup wires. So I ended up cutting the wires, routed them through the hole and then soldered the wires again. But it was worth it. Routing was not an issue on my fender though. Now I have EMGs on both my sire and Fender and I’m enjoying the tone 🙂
emgs💯

In my opinion EMG mejor
In my opinion EMG better
I agree with you 😊
