As a Caps fan - that should have been a boarding call for sure.
I fully agree with this call, now start calling it more often even when guys don't get hurt on the play. This play happens 5 times a night right now already.
Boarding? yes it is. Should be a penalty. Probably a double minor cause he was bleeding. But a game misconduct? Really? and Kempe didnt miss a shift for concussion protocol?
I'm a big Oilers fan, and hate to say it, but I agree with the call. Good to see McDavid playing with more of an edge this year though. His team let him down in the collapse.
@@equipt0xxx haha so it's ok when other players do it to McDavid all game with no calls. Not saying he did anything right. He drew blood and for sure a call..but refs gotta be consistency.
Pretty sure I don’t see players bleeding from the face from being hit in the numbers along the boards every game. I think that’s what caused this call to happen more than anything. Look, I like McDavid, and the refs are definitely prone to error, but this wasn’t a bad call.
I don't think McDavid meant to hurt him, it didn't even look like that big of a game, but that's absolutely the right call. Shoulder into Kempe's numbers on the board. At least Kempe seems mostly fine.
I agree. I don't think he wanted to hurt him but its clearly a hit you can't and shouldn't be making. Especially from someone whos got all eyes on him from the younger generation. These guys meet to set examples and stop throwing trash hits so maybe the culture will change. Half of these hits should be avoided by just not throwing a check because you clearly shouldn't.
@@Alex-tj2tg nah thats not hockey. He injured someone with a check from behind. Not a hockey play at all. I'm all for hits big hits open ice hits hip checks. Just clean hits. This is far from it. And could have been avoided.
And of course MacDirty pulled this crap again this year, giving Mikey Anderson a concussion and ruining the Kings' stretch drive. It's arguable that the Kings are gutless for not retaliating…but it's equally likely that the League has told everybody that MacDickhead gets to do this and you're not allowed to pay him back.
Good call but seen that not called a thousand times. Also, if 5minute is called, how does Kempe not get a concussion spotter take him off for the minimum ten minutes or whatever it's is for observation, goes out and scores, seems counter productive.
because a boarding penalty has nothing to do with concussion protocol. He didn't get a major for a head shot, he got it for a board. Right call all around. Wasn't a dirty hit and I dont think it was really on purpose though.
It was a major because of an injury to the head or neck came about due to boarding; the injury was minor, bleeding from the mouth, but it's still an injury. It's a cut and dry rule.
Earlier in the year I said the Oilers looked like the 2010 Capitals. I didn’t think they would be so similar their star player would get suspended for the same thing Ovi did that year.
If I recall Ovi's hit was alot more brutal but I remember for sure he took himself out of the all star game, probably because he just didn't wanna go lol
Kopitar is a class act here for not killing McDavid. He could have easily pounded on him but I think the non-verbal's from McDavid showed Kopitar that he already knew he screwed up and was probably done for the night. Plus, Kopitar already knows his team is getting a 5 min PP, why lose time getting a dumb penalty for revenge? McDavid is does not have a history of these hits so there was no need to wail on him just because. If it was Marchand he would probably be destroyed.
Agree. A lot of times when a teammate gets blasted into the boards like that, usually they go right after the offender and a fight occurs. However it seemed Kopitar was more concerned that Connie was ok and less concerned about his own teammate.
Yup it's his first ejection but it's not the first time he did a hit that was boarding he did it to Oduya but there was no call. Not a McDavid hater just saying the facts!! Although I love his physicality as of late he just gotta be careful and learn when to retaliate when not to, who to hit or agitate and how the person might respond if they are agitated and the breakdown and nuances of mind games.
@@911WASanINSIDEjob420 how? McDavid came in too hot, hit him in the numbers and sent him face first into the boards causing the dude to bleed from his face. It was a board, there’s literally nothing to argue.
I'm in Edmonton, and root for the Oilers. This is flat out worthy of what he got, 5mins and a misconduct. Having said that, McD also gets hooked, held, interfered with every game, and those doing it get away with it 95% of the time. That is not an excuse for this hit, but it is a fact that is a factor as to why this hit happened to start with, imo.
NHL literally makes their sport worse by not letting their once in a lifetime talent show how good he really is. Everyone knows he's the best by far and people come to see that sort of attraction. Now he's missing minutes in games bc he's just as tired of it as the hockey fans. Idk why we're trying to hide that he's a lot better than what the numbers say. Imo if he was less handicapped by the league he could average two maybe three points a game
It would be like Schiefele taking out Evans in the second round last summer. He was suspended for the rest of the series and the Jets' season opener of this season.
I would assume he saw the other ref put his arm up so he didn't in case of an additional penalty... unfortunately we don't see the other ref so it's hard to know for sure. All we see are the linemen who don't make those calls. At least I hope that's the case

It's not what I would describe as a dirty hit. What made the difference was that Kempe turned his head into the glass just as McDavid hit his shoulder and the guy went down like a sack of potatoes. Compared with other boarding calls where the offender is coming at the guy with full force who is facing the glass with no chance to protect himself, McDavid's hit was a fluky love tap. I am not saying Kempe didn't get clocked but if he had kept his head looking up the boards I doubt anything would have happened. The call was the right one in the end.
If you actually go back and watch a bit earlier in the shift you will see McDavid and Kempe got tangled up at the blue line and they both exchanged words and looks at each other. You could clearly see the frustration from McDavid. So, to then see him go down in the corner some 20 seconds later and lay that hit isn't surprising. I don't think he meant the hit to turn out like it did, but it was clearly a frustrated player laying a suspect retaliatory hit. The refs knew about the altercation seconds earlier, McDavid's frustration, and nothing wrong at all with 5 minutes in that scenario. Good call.
Fair call, but didn't look malicious by any means IMO. Crazy how badly the Oilers fell apart after he was ejected. No question that team revolves around him

I know McDavid isn't a dirty player. This hit was just unfortunate timing for him. With a game like hockey and how fast paced it is, some things are unavoidable. No bad blood to McDavid, especially when the PP led to three goals and the win.
Don't give him too much grace he knows his speed and needs to learn to watch out for things like that he's a grown man now and needs maturing 6th season for him he bloody well is aware of the dangers of not watching his speed going toward someone when someone's even close to looking away
He can be a little emotional, like the McElbow. But overall I agree, this seems just unlucky for both involved although he should be able to control his body a bit more
No, he’s a way dirty player, you should have watched him play in the northern division last year. Absolutely disgraceful. Throwing elbows all game and dirty tactics when he loses.
That was the gentlest hit I have ever seen get called a major penalty. I'm not saying it wasn't a major, but man, it looked like McD barely bumped him - there was no speed or violence.
Don't think intent was malicious but just one of those hits that present itself to you quickly and after you throw the hit you wince because you know it was borderline. Right call by rule interpretation.
It's an automatic ejection if there's a head or neck injury. Which there was. . But I agree I've seen harder hits and players as a result and no one was elected
And yet a few nights ago in the Oilers vs Kraken game, Colton Scevior was the victim of this exact same hit. Guess what? Didn't even get a 2 minute minor. Lol
I am Oilers fan. Yes McDavid deserved a penalty for that but I’m more mad at how they played without him. They were acting like its just some driveway hockey game and God, I was so embarrassed I couldn’t keep my eyes on the screen any longer. But I hope they are embarrassed to and grow from this. We aren’t a one man team. I don’t know if you guys remember but two years ago when McDavid was injured, the team did fine without him in fact we were on a winning streak. I have no idea what happened this game but I don’t want to see it again. The OILERS cant keep losing to teams that are badder than they are, shouldn’t it be an easy win? Why are bad teams our weakness? Its strange but it better change.
As a kings fan I think the call was the right one... But if he gets any sort of player safety backlash I call BS. He could have really buried Kempe, and I felt like he let up on the hit to no small degree. I don't get to watch most games (I work the closing shift) but going in I fully expected the kings to get run over
I’ve seen worse when players finish checks. It’s another one of those because he was “injured”. So inconsistent. He gets thrown out pionk gets nothing for knee on knee.
Agree with the call bad numbers hard to stop in time, but why doesnt Kempe miss a shift for protocol, his head clearly hit the boards and was bleeding but back out on the powerplay??

Just got tickets the other day to my first oilers game in 6 years. I've never witnessed McDavid in person and it looks like I won't be doing that :( Oh well.
It wasn't vicious but it fits the penalty imposed. Doesn't look like McDavid intended to injure Kempe but he did draw blood. A game misconduct insures a small fine and possible suspension. A match penalty , deliberate attempt to injure, brings additional sanctions.
It's good that they are calling stuff on Connor McDavid. Just because he is the "golden boy" and stuff happens to him doesn't mean he is exempt from not getting stuff called on him. The irony is a Kempe scored.
I feel like refs just make up what’s a minor or a major on the fly for boarding. Not saying this wasn’t deserving of a major. It’s just that I’ve seen other hits exactly like this and sometimes even more dangerous than this go completely uncalled.
I've seen non calls with players going 4 times as hard against a dude on the boards. McDavid is the fastest player in the game, but that was a slow bump... That said, good that McDavid sits abit, dude needs to relax more...he has too much hidden anger in him.
You would have the same frustration if night after night the other teams get away with everything. There was an interference penalty that should have been called on Kempe right before they entered the zone. Spotsnet didnt show it in this video. Go watch TSN

Kempe's face smashes into the boards after McDavid hit him in the back, square in the numbers, and Kempe ends up on his hands and knees dripping blood on the ice. Like cross-checking? I heard the league was trying to get rid of those but I see those all the time. The refs need to call the rule book - not just bits and pieces - and players will adjust and the on-ice product would improve.
Ring. Ring. Hello? Hello Mr. Referee. This is Mrs. Kempe, Adrian’s mom. I think Adrian is going to be bruised from that check by that big brute on the team in orange. Don’t you think you should halt the game for a while until you see how big of a bruise appears? After all, a bruise indicates internal bleeding. All the Mcdavid fans saying it’s not a penalty. What if that happens to Mcdavid? The fact is: Mcdavid is an emotional player who has proven to not be able to control his emotions, usually in a losing situation. I think this is one of many gaps between Mcdavid and Crosby.
