Alex Verdugo is insane right now. A lot of red on that page. 9/10 games so far this season with multiple hits. Perfect lead off hitter so far. Also playing great defense in right field. Don’t be surprised if Dugie gets all star votes this year.
Just wondering why the Rays who lead the league in every offense category, have the pitching rotation ERA, an outstanding run differential, 6 shutout games, 19-3 record; but no "surprising players" to begin the year. Small market curse is real.
He's also outstanding on the base paths, demonstrating his speed and athleticism.* My guess---and, of course that's all it is---is that he's also an important part of the Cub's chemistry which has allowed for the resurgence that, surely, is exciting the North side's baseball fans. Wait for the warm weather in Chicago, wait for game #50, he may prove to be more than back. As a White Sox fan, I can only wish him, and the Cubs, the best! * He currently is tied for the National League lead in runs scored. p.s. Marc, you do good work. Your upbeat personality comes shining through these videos.
He’s also battling just under .350 and has been very clutch for a struggling Astros team. The guy was picked up as nothing more than a backup last year and now is a production machine.
We’re not going to talk about Geraldo Perdomo, who has really found his way on the d-backs team. He’s batting .400 with an 1.128 OPS (.650 slugging) and has 11 rbis. He’s looked so much better from last year and is really flying under the radar with how good he’s been for the d-backs.
Verdugo should be up here. He has batted for a high average with good pop and good defense. His peripherals look really good too, so it doesnt seem like luck.
Kevin Kiermaier right now leads the league for most hits from the 9 spot. Right now he's hitting .311 with2 homers and still running at an elite level. He already has a 1.8 war.
Kenley Jansen been crazy too, he wasn't as "washed" as Chapman in people's mind, but no cap he's been as great as I've ever seen him be. Of course just a few games but as a Sox fan it feels good to have less drama when we're leading into the 9th
Gotta be Alex Verdugo so far for me. He’s been incredible and super clutch, and basically all of his Savant numbers back him up. Just a great at-bat every single time, regardless of outcome
@Andres Cruz verdugo has been widely considered a huge disappointment. Most people never thought he would hit his potential. As a sox fan o had given up on him becoming and all star caliber player.
Anthony DeSclafani in three starts has an ERA of 1.42, a whip of 0.63 with 19 innings pitched, & 16 K’s. Funny enough, he’s pitching today against the Mets.
As a rangers fan, I like Jonah Heim but I haven’t seen this out of him before. He’s hitting nukes from both sides, is getting on base, and continues to be a wizard behind the plate. Hoping he keeps it up
Rooting big time for Cody..... 5 hit game he had the other night was a total shock...now with 5 HR's and 14 RBI's.... He may be an All Star again... especially when he takes walks like he hasnt in years.... a higher OBP is huge for him.... and his frame of mind. HIs confidence is high at the moment.
Alex Verdugo could’ve been mentioned in this video he has been on an absolute tear I mean everyone expected him to do decently as in play good defense and hit well but never great but so far hes been very good at both
Sam Hilliard for ATL. I'm biased as a Braves fan, but ever since Harris got hurt, Hilliard has stepped up in a MASSIVE way. He was a great under the radar pick up by the Braves this offseason; I have always been high on Hilliard even before we got him, but I'm LOVING his performance at the plate, on the base paths, and manning CF.
GRAHAM ASHCRAFT FOR SURE! He’s killing it for the Reds. Best rookie starting pitcher in baseball in my opinion. Love the addition of Brandon Marsh in this video. I decided to pc him late last year. He’s gonna be special. He will keep these numbers consistent. His skill set is amazing and he works harder than anyone in any club he’s in.
Justin Steele probably shouldn't even be a surprise tbh, people were just sleeping on him big time after his elite 2nd half last year. one of the best pitchers in baseball so far this year though. Yan Gomes being an elite catcher definitely helps, all the cubs starters are doing great and the cubs at 10-1 with him behind the plate
Cardinals fan here. 3 things: 1. Nolan Gorman should be in this video. Possibly in place of Patrick Wisdom 2. I love that Cutch is back with the Pirates and doing well. He's one of my favorite players. 3. Nice job with penultimate. No notes.
Honestly Kevin Kiermaier is also doing really well. When the Jays signed him, we all thought he was just gonna be a 4th outfielder. Instead, he’s actually hitting really well (for his standards) and of course being KK defensively.
@@Wavrs literally everybody has been talking abt him, saying he is “underrated” to the point where he literally isn’t underrated st all. Because he isnt
Mauricio Dubon definitely deserves some spotlight. Guy coming into this year was horrible. Consistently hitting .220 or lower with little to no power. He’s currently on a 20 game hit streak when his previous high was only 6 games. And he’s been doing a good job in the lead off spot for the defending champions.
Me as a cubs fan i believe patrick wisdom is just joey gallo front to back but the way the cubs are built this year they need that power bat in that line up no matter how much he strike outs
Its a bit later but I gotta shoutout Alex Cobb of the Giants. Never been an All Star but he has been so welcome for the Giants this year with his best season (so far) in a long while after being about average at least at run prevention. He's not walking guys as much and thus isnt giving up many runs when he does let those occasional dingers up.
Yes! I haven’t seen many pitchers strand batters as efficiently as Cobb, unless it’s his teammate and fellow tightrope walker Camilo Doval. Cobb’s WHIP is merely average but his ERA is at the top of the league. It’ll be interesting to see whether he can keep it up given that he’s usually pitching with runners on base. Torture.
While the Angels season has been very up and down, Jose quijada out of the bullpen has been amazing so far. Hasn't given up a run and a WHIP at 0.50 in 8 innings of work with 4 saves. I don't expect his numbers to stay this way, but it's been nice to have a reliable bullpen arm.
I mean josh Lowe and Taylor walls have been absolutely popping off this season. Taylor walls with the bigger surprise at this point. He has been really good in the field since he came into the league but his bat has come alive this year. Definitely should have been on the list.
Sam Hillard has been a great surprise for my braves! Especially with Michael Harris's injury, he's filled in well and force himself into play everyday.
I would say another suprising player this year (compared to past numbers) is Joey Gallo because he was a career below 200 hitter and now is hitting 296 with 5 home runs and a 1296 ops, 406 obp and an 889 slugging percentage. Plus his max exit velo is in the 92nd percentile.
Bryce Elder, he didn't even make the team out of Spring Training, started as the season opener for AAA until Max Fried got hurt. As of tonight he is 2-0 (should have been 3-0 if the bullpen didn't blow it), 4 starts, 23.2 innings, 3 ER, 7 BB, 23 K, WHIP of 1.18, all with an ERA of 1.14.
Eduardo Rodriguez not being here is insane. 1.57 ERA, .794 whip, 3.07 fip, a 277 ERA+, 8.2 k per 9, less than 6 hits per 9, less than a HR per 9, 1.7 walks per 9, save for his most recent save, hes been lights out
While we have certainly known about Pete Alonso's abilities for a while now, I don't think anyone really expected him to have 10 homers, 23 RBIs, and an OPS of 1.047 21 games into the year.
Jake Burger had an incredibly explosive start while filling in for the injured Yoan Moncada. cant say much for his fielding, but hitting 5 homeruns in your first 6 starts of the year is crazy. he has seemingly started to fall off already though, hoping he bounces back
Bryson Stott has been a monster to start 2023, Patrick Wisdom hit his 9th bomb today, James Outman is hitting all over the place, Andrew McCutchen looks like peak CUTCH, Cody Bellinger looks maybe almost like Cody Bellinger again and finally even though the Reds are still terrible so far Jonathan India looks like the Rookie of the Year he was in 2021...
Bellinger surprising? Dude was killing it from the get go till he got hurt, he's healthy and now I feel vindicated for sticking up for him, shame the Dodgers couldn't hang that's another mvp Friedman has let go-- looking at yordan.
3 Cubs in this list is funny. But heres a fun fact, since July 2022, Steele owns the best ERA in all of baseball. And still he's so underrated and not getting alot of attention.
You could probably give C Bellinger a little slack for the low numbers a few years back when the deadballs were present, numbers were noticeably down across the board in both the AL & NL.
Geraldo Perdomo has been a massive surprise. Ive gone from maybe hes temporary until Lawlar comes up to thinking hes gonna be Ketel's replacement down the road.
Andrew McCutchen could be a front runner for comeback player of the year and could lead his team to win the division, but I think the Cubs can win that division.
Surprised you didn't put Nimmo on this list. We all knew how good he was last year, but this year he his becoming a top 3 CF in the MLB. His batting .avg is 3rd in the majors, he is 2nd in OBP, and he's making plays out in Center field like they're nobodies business.
